Day 27: Lunch

Renji wasn't so certain what this grilled cheese thing was all about, but he liked the sound of some soup. Even if it was strange western soup, well... there wasn't anything bad people could do to soup, in his experience. His good mood was starting to fray at the edges, a little, from the strain of dealing with the Ichimaru issue, and even more from what had been on the bulletin board earlier.

He'd never had difficulty simply writing something before. But...

He shook his head as he entered the line. He didn't want to think about it. He wanted to hold on to the tenuous equilibrium he'd managed to find.

Renji got himself a large bowl of soup, water, and even one of those sandwiches, just to try it. Old habit, recently awakened, had him over to one side of the cafeteria, where the fewest people possible would have the chance to pass behind him. He sat there with his back toward the wall and started eating.

At least someone had taken heed to his demand, without even having to word it. Scar watched the other patient miming how to eat this sandwich-thing.

"I see." he replied blankly, suddenly feeling he was making a fool out of himself once again. It seemed some food had to be eaten by these strange items next to his plate, while something else had to be eaten without it. These creatures, whatever they were, certainly knew how to make something simple such as eating complicated.

My, the advantages were just piling up for him, weren't they?

Scar copied the other patient's movement, and after picking up the sandwich with difficulty he somehow managed to bring it to his mouth and take a bite from it. The taste was as alien as the food had looked.

Brock couldn't help staring while the new patient maneuvered the sandwich as carefully as if it would leap out of his hands at any given second. He almost felt like congratulating him when he finally managed to take a bite for him, because it felt more like he'd just watched an Olympic event than something as simple as eating. At least it distracted him from his own problems.

"I'm guessing you've never had a grilled cheese sandwich before," Brock said. He swallowed his own bite. "I'm Eddie, by the way."

It couldn't hurt to be on a name basis, if he ended up having to coach this guy on how to do something like lacing up his shoes.

"Oh, how did you guess?" Scar replied dryly, aware of the fact he was apparently performing quite the show. He had no idea watching someone eat was this interesting, though in his case it probably was.

He briefly glanced at his sandwich, concluding that cheese tasted incredibly odd, only to return his gaze to the other patient.

"I am Scar." he replied to the male's introduction.

Brock didn't think this guy had any excuse to get all sarcastic with him when he couldn't even manage to eat a simple sandwich without help, but decided against pointing that little fact out. He wasn't that big a dick, for starters, and you had to give a guy who didn't even know the basics of eating a break at least once. He couldn't say he was particularly surprised at this guy's name - considering the fact he had a pretty impressive scar over one eye, it seemed self-evident that he might just be happy with settling for such an obvious name.

"So where're you from?" Brock asked. It wasn't that he expected anything useful from learning where all these people were from, but it wasn't like he'd entirely forgot how to be conversational just because he was host to an alien.

If anyone asked Scar, he'd say he had all the excuse he needed for his sarcastic remark. After all, awakening in a strange place with a strange body wasn't quite something that brightened any one's mood. Let alone that it would brighten Scar's mood, as the lion-changed-human had the idea he was making a fool out of himself. He hated making a fool out of himself.

He wasn't quite sure whether it was wise to speak of his homeland. But on the other hand, if all these patients truly came from different worlds, it did not matter. After all, the odds of anyone who had heard of him were quite slim. And this Eddie hadn't sounded as if he had recognized his name.

"The Pride Lands." he finally replied. "And where have they taken you from?
