Day 27: Lunch

Renji wasn't so certain what this grilled cheese thing was all about, but he liked the sound of some soup. Even if it was strange western soup, well... there wasn't anything bad people could do to soup, in his experience. His good mood was starting to fray at the edges, a little, from the strain of dealing with the Ichimaru issue, and even more from what had been on the bulletin board earlier.

He'd never had difficulty simply writing something before. But...

He shook his head as he entered the line. He didn't want to think about it. He wanted to hold on to the tenuous equilibrium he'd managed to find.

Renji got himself a large bowl of soup, water, and even one of those sandwiches, just to try it. Old habit, recently awakened, had him over to one side of the cafeteria, where the fewest people possible would have the chance to pass behind him. He sat there with his back toward the wall and started eating.

Sora had gotten a little discouraged when he couldn't find MOMO during the second shift. He wanted to make sure she wasn't beating herself up too much over what had happened, and he counted himself at being pretty good at cheering people up. Then again, he hadn't done a very good job with Renji, but...

Well, generally he wasn't so bad at it!

The first thing he did upon entering the cafeteria was look for her again. Luckily, there weren't too many girls who had pink hair, and it wasn't long before he spotted her. He almost headed straight for her, but he knew that he needed food--not to mention those grilled cheese sandwiches smelled really good. He threw a sandwich and some french fries on a plate and then headed over to MOMO's table, forcing himself not to limp as he walked. She must have known she had injured him, but he didn't need to make it obvious.

"Hey!" he greeted her as he took the seat across from her. "I'm Sora," he explained, not certain she would remember him. He didn't know how clear the memories were.

Looking up, MOMO easily recognized the same boy she had seen, but avoided, at breakfast. Her sensors had gone back to providing her with only minimal readings since she had woken up that morning, and from what she could tell Sora didn't appear to be hurt too badly. For that, she was grateful.

"Good afternoon," she returned the greeting, putting on a small smile. "I'm, uh... MOMO." Though he probably already knew that since she had signed her note on the bulletin board.

Scratching her cheek, the realian paused momentarily. Speaking with Ami, and others over the message board, helped ease her worries, but she still found herself a little uneasy when it came to speaking to someone she had fought in person. Especially since Sora seemed to be a nice person, if his words on the board and greeting were any indicator.

"I'm really sorry about last night. I... I would've never done anything like that normally..."

Sora gave a nod in response to her introduction. He had already taken note of her name, but it was nice to hear it straight from her nonetheless. He could tell that she was embarrassed, awkward, and probably uncomfortable with the situation, but he thought this was better than avoiding her. He wanted her to know that it was all right.

"Don't apologize," he said smoothly, flashing a grin at her. He was being casual, as if they were already friends and were having a less serious discussion than what it actually was. He took a bite of his sandwich, but was actually conscientious enough to finish chewing and swallowing before he spoke again.

"I know you wouldn't," he said, forcing eye contact with her so that she wouldn't miss the simple, encouraging look he was giving her. "I can tell you were really bothered about what happened, and that proves how good of a person you are. Even though it wasn't your fault, you still feel bad. That means that you care, right? So stop worrying! Everyone's fine, and no one blames you for it." Or they better not, anyway -- if he caught anyone saying anything along those lines, he planned to have a talk with them.

As she listened to what he was saying, she couldn't help but smile gratefully. It really did seem as though Ami and Citan were right in what they had said; those who had been involved understood the situation, and they weren't looking to take anything out on her. That was reassuring in itself, but still. Even if it hadn't really been her fault, it was difficult to not feel guilty about it.

Regardless, MOMO smiled and gave a slight nod once Sora had finished. "Thank you, Sora. Everyone's been really nice so far, and I'm really glad that everyone seems to be all right. I just wish there was something I could do to make up for it."

"Hmm..." Sora mumbled over a bite of sandwich, looking across the table at the girl seriously as he considered this. He could understand wanting to make it up to people, since he would have been the same way. Sora didn't like to think about what would happen if he ever got picked for Special Counseling, and how many people he would hurt if he went into Drive Mode or something like that.

"Well, you offered to heal people, right? You should be glad you could do that. I used to be able to cast a mean Curaga spell - not as good as Donald, but... Anyway, I can't do any magic here. It sucks." He frowned down at his sandwich. He was grateful that he still had the Keyblade, of course, but he wished he could help with the healing, too.

MOMO nodded slowly, as she took a few spoonful's of her soup. She knew he was right. She had offered to heal people, and though she still wasn't certain how effective her spells would be in this place, she'd be happy at just being able to help at all.

Curaga? The realian could only assume that was some form of healing wherever Sora was from. Either way, hearing the boy mention what he was, or rather wasn't, capable of here reminded her of something else.

"Oh! Um... there's something I'm a little curious about. I hope you don't mind me asking, but..." Trailing off, she cast a quick look around before lowering her voice slightly and continuing, "What was that weapon you had last night..? I didn't see anything like that with you when I first saw you. And you couldn't have just picked it up somewhere outside, right..?"

Sora brightened when the topic turned to something he was more than comfortable talking about. "Oh, you noticed that, huh?" he asked with a grin. Well, of course she had - he had kind of whacked her with it.

Better to get away from that, though, and onto the explaining. "It's called a Keyblade," he started, and it was rather obvious that he was proud based on his tone and the way he was puffing his chest out a little. "It's a weapon only I can use, and I'm able to summon it. From here," he said, indicating his chest.

"Usually it's a lot easier, and I can bring it out whenever, but when I'm here..." He didn't really want to mention the 'being in danger' requirement, since that might make her feel bad, so he faltered for a moment and tried to think of a different way to phrase it. "It'll only come out during certain circumstances."

[identity profile] floraltempest.livejournal.com 2007-09-28 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
"Keyblade?" MOMO repeated, canting her head slightly. She couldn't recall hearing of a weapon called that before, although weapons that could be summoned from seemingly nowhere weren't really new. Her own Either bow was the same way, although she somehow doubted a 'Keyblade' was connected to Ether circuitry.

"Hmm... it sounds like a very useful weapon," she said, smiling as she caught the obvious pride in his voice. "Even if it'll only come out at certain times here, at least you have something if you really need it." She wasn't entirely sure what the 'certain circumstances' he mentioned were, but she hadn't failed to notice he slight hesitation he gave so she opted not to question it further.

"But if you're the only one who can use it, does that mean your Keyblade is the only one that exists? Or are there others that other people can use?"

"Yeah, I'm really glad I still have it," he agreed seriously. With the way others were searching for weapons, he was one of the few lucky ones whose weapons had stayed with them despite the efforts made to remove them from everyone. He figured it had to do with the fact that it was so strongly attached to his heart.

As for her question, that was a little harder to respond to. He thought it over for a moment. At one point, he had been the only one who could use a Keyblade, but then it had turned out that Riku had been the original Keyblade Master, and then Roxas had come about -- and it seemed like Kairi was able to use one now, too. A lot had changed since he had first gotten his Keyblade, that was for sure.

"A few others can use Keyblades, actually, but it's kind of complicated to explain," he admitted, not sure he could tell her all about it concisely. "And actually, I can use two Keyblades at once sometimes! Not here, though."
