NIGHT 65: WEST WING, SOUTH HALL 1-A

[From here]

No time was wasted in this short stretch of hallway. Link had run across all of Hyrule Field. This hospital was quite small in comparison.

Praying that he wouldn't come across anything to slow him down, Link turned into the main hallways.

... That figured. It wasn't entirely bad, though. It didn't put Kyousuke any closer to finding Sora, but there didn't seem to be any real signs of other attacks, either. For now, at least. They needed to figure out something to do before that changed, but unfortunately, he couldn't offer much.

"... No," he admitted, tensing up and looking away. "The speed was incredible. If he starts running, he's already gone. He didn't seem to be in the patient halls anymore, though."

Not that it helped any. That was only one area, and left just about anywhere, and this place was big and dangerous enough that wandering around carelessly opened you up to all sorts of trouble. This was the second night he'd been attacked, after all. He'd gotten away fine the first time, but that wasn't a very good track record, and he wasn't optimistic enough to think that it would improve.

"It's possible he'll try to avoid people," the boy mentioned. "It seems he doesn't like light very much. He ran away because I shined my flashlight on his face."

That was probably the best thing he could hope for right now. He'd been able to figure that out, so maybe the people Sora ran into would, too.

Oh. The Doctor couldn't quite decide if it was disappointing or not that the boy didn't know where his friend had run off to—on the one hand, it meant that maybe anyone lingering around the patient blocks would be safe (from one of those who'd changed, at least), but on the other...

"Well, if he's that fast, he could be anywhere by now. I don't think there's much hope in catching up to him now," the Doctor commented. "But... Most people seem to carry their torches with them at night"—he lifted his own torch to jiggle it in indication—"so there's that. Hopefully he won't run across anyone without a light." Assuming it really was the light that made him run—and at the very least, the Doctor wanted to think that it was. Better yet would be that even if his body had changed, his mind hadn't gone with it completely, so that maybe he could hang until the cure was ready.

With no idea of where the boy's friend had gone and no idea where the others who'd changed might be either, it was back to his original course of action: going after a cure. But first... "How's your wound?" he asked softly, looking at the blood-stained cloth again. "I can't do anything for your friend right now, but I was going to head after the other clue... You could come along, if you feel up to it."

Right... It was almost impossible to see in this place without a light, unless you were trying to glean something from someone else's flashlight, like he'd done earlier. Not that it had actually worked, but Kyousuke hadn't thought to account for things that could see in pitch black.

The mention of his wound made him hesitate. There was no reason to be dishonest about how bad it was, nor was it a good idea to pretend that it didn't exist. On the other hand, it they wouldn't be able to do much about it no matter what he said about it. And then there was Sora. The light worked to everyone's favor, but Kyousuke wasn't so sure he wanted to leave that chance. Something could still happen. Someone could get attacked, or worse yet, they could retaliate. And worst of all...

But his chances of finding him again like this were slim at best, and his chances of doing something beneficial were even less. He'd only put himself into an even bigger mess, when truthfully, he shouldn't even be walking around. He didn't like it, but... The clue probably was his best option. If they found something that actually worked on whatever was going on, then, and probably only then, would he actually be able to help.

"... I'll slow you down," Kyousuke warned seriously. "If I move too fast, or make one wrong step..." He couldn't even breathe the way he was supposed to; his breaths came short, because even just that hurt. Too much air, or too sharp an intake or release was just agony. He kept that to himself for now, but if it got any worse, he knew he'd have to speak up.

Of course, maybe the guy would think twice about bringing him along while he was in this state. Kyousuke couldn't say he'd be able to blame him.

"Even more reason to stick together," the Doctor said, with an understanding smile. The boy was already this hurt—he didn't want to think what might happen if something else (be it monster or changed patient) came across him while he was in this state. "Unless, of course, you'd rather wait the night out in your room... You should be safe there."

He'd never heard of people being attacked in their rooms—up until now, at least. Come to think of it, had the boy's attacker been his roommate? And for that matter, what had happened to those whose roommates were the ones to change? The thought of what might have occurred broke his hearts, but... —There was nothing he could do about it right now. It was best to keep forging ahead, to put a stop to everything before even more people were hurt.

"—Well, more safe than wandering the halls," he amended. "I won't force you to come if you don't want to."

His room, huh... He probably would be better off there. But in the end, Kyousule thrived on doing things. Tearing himself away from trying to do something about Sora was hard enough; hiding away while others were still putting themselves on the line was just unfathomable. Hurt or otherwise, he wasn't that pathetic. And to be honest, he was grateful the man would have him at all despite how useless he was right now, or that he wasn't insisting that he needed to rest. ... Not that he was about to mention as much.

"Let's get going, then," he assented instead, starting off on his own. He didn't know the way to medical wing, but he at least knew he was headed the right way, since the other direction led to the hospital's grounds.
