Nightshift 23 -- Second Floor. Hallway Outside Medical Reference Library/Staff Training Area

[[From here]]

Recluse stopped at the top of the stairs, sufficiently far enough from the flashlight so that he felt a little less jumpy. He scanned the area, trying to make sure there were no unpleasant surprises waiting for him in the dark halls. Satisfied for the moment that the area was safe, he turned to speak quietly to the reporter.

"I haven't been to the chapel before. I assume you know the way?"

Elena was honestly surprised. She had expected all sorts of creepy crawlies--the standard Landel's fare--to ambush them on the stairs, but their trek upwards was actually pretty uneventful. Sure, she'd stumbled over the odd step and been obliged to cling to the handrail, but the flashlight really hadn't done much to illuminate the ground directly in front of her...so...

Once she reached the top, Elena paused and looked towards the others. "Now what?"

Although the exchange on the stairwell had all but shot his confidence in his "guides," he couldn't fault them for not knowing. He didn't even know where he was going. As the younger brother and as a Sacrifice, he felt like he should know where Seimei was at all times, but... Well, Natsuo and Yohji were right. He was a lousy Sacrifice. At the top of the stairs, Ritsuka turned on his own flashlight and, stepping to the front of the group, swung a pale circle of light to the right. "Over there is the railing that shows the Sun Room. Seimei and I explored that place - pharmacy, some other useless rooms. Then further down is a hallway with things like the Laundry Room." He arced the beam to the left. "I have no idea what's down that way."

Nothing had ambushed on the stairs because something was waiting to ambush from...well, somewhere else. The spider wasn't really aware of where it was, specifically.

It was, however, quite aware of the presence of people. Of flesh and the blood coursing beneath.

Its legs skittered and clicked on the tiled floors, as its body remained hidden in the shadows and just out of the swinging beams of light. It immediately latched onto what it deemed easy prey: the young boy at the front of the group, and closest to it.

Deadly pincers snapping, it rushed its victim with surprising speed, hoping to catch a stray limb - and maybe even snap it off.

His training as a hunter had by no means augmented his human senses, so he didn't notice the foreign being approaching at first. The skittering seemed to define the monster as a breed of spider, maneuvering itself with a delicate grace. Before Dean could identify whether the reverberation was the introduction of imminent danger, the flashlight's beam was directed in the path of the sound; and at the rapid notice of a monster's outline, Dean's actions became wired on instinct, clutching almost blindly at the space in front of him to grab the boy's wrist and wrench his lithe figure behind him.

The heat of the moment hardened his grip on Ritsuka, possibly bruising him... better than getting skewered by some thing, anyway. He hoped with swiftness as he released the boy that Ritsuka wouldn't consequently crash into a wall; Dean had swung him away with a skilled ferocity he couldn't quite lessen in times like these.

It all occurred in a matter of seconds - he had no time to judge Elena's stance in the situation, naturally putting the safety of the youngest in the group first.
