Night 49: West Wing, South Hall 1-B

Maybe she should go snatch up her patient file? Possessions, too. Yuffie'd never say no to free stuff, even if it was a bunch of crap from a lie of a life. If she was lucky, she'd get somethin' handy. Handy like a cellphone, or, hell, even a laptop! Yuffie wasn't a technical genius at the best of times, preferring to leave all that stuff to Reeve and the guys in R&D, but if she could get 'em up and working, they'd be like a gift straight from Leviathan.

The hallway sure was a lot creepier at night, even if Minako didn't see any of the monsters that supposedly showed up. It was just...darker. And not in a "the lights aren't on" sort of way, but in a "the lights went out because the zombie army chewed through the cables" way. Maybe she'd just been watching too many scary movies.

Whatever. She tightened her grip around her flashlight and moved on resolutely. First she had to get out of the part of the building she'd already seen.

Despite the weather, things were relatively quiet. People were likely considering their activities for the night or had opted out entirely. Overall, this was desirable. A crowd wouldn't help Nigredo's nausea. Would, in fact, serve as obstacles to his progress.

Granted, he didn't have a single goal in mind.

The boy tugged at a sleeve in discomfort and progressed down the corridor. A high traffic area was within a few steps; it would be best if Nigredo hurried. He wanted a quiet passage before everyone left their rooms.

There was, surprisingly enough, no one in the hallway when they entered it.

Slightly off putting, but Bella made no comment about it.

"Okay, the nurse's station should be pretty close to here ..." she followed her map down the hallway, her flashlight pointed towards the floor until stopping in front of the door marked "Nurse's Station". "Here we go," she muttered, folding up the map once again to place her hands on her hips, looking at the foreboding door. "Should we make a bet on whether or not it's locked or not? I'm going to go with locked, since in horror movies the destination is always blocked off."

Why could nothing ever be easy? Best horror movie setting ever.

[identity profile] autophoenix.livejournal.com 2010-05-16 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course, she agreed completely with Bella's assertion, but that didn't stop her from smiling a little, raising a brow at the other girl.

"Come on, now you're just jinxing it. It totally would have been open if you hadn't said anything." Moving forward, she tried the handle of the door, jiggling when it didn't open at first and throwing her shoulder into it. Thankfully, though the door didn't budge, the force of slamming into it didn't hurt Claire, either. Just pressure and discomfort, like always. Somehow, that wasn't relieving in the slightest to her, though, because she knew exactly who she had to 'thank' for that.

Her expression soured and she backed off the door some, one hand finding her hip while the other held her flashlight to check it out, tracing a pattern along the doorframe to try and see if there was a spare key hidden somewhere. No such luck.

"It's not gonna budge. I mean, I guess it was wishful thinking anyway, thinking they'd leave something like that open, but you can't blame me for trying." She heaved a sigh and turned to look at Bella. "So much for thinking anything here's going to be easy."

And now that she wasn't focused on the door, she took the time to look around. No one was around, and that was just unsettling on a whole lot of levels. Like this place wasn't already horror movie central. Claire was getting pretty sick of living her life in Gothika already and she'd only been there for a day. Before she knew it, a whine had escaped her.

"We can step out of the Twilight Zone anytime now."

The demon glanced quickly at anyone he passed, but none were familiar. AS he was passing the female block, he considered checking up on Aigis, but then decided that wasn't necessary. She had her own comrades, and she'd probably want to find them before night got much further underway. IF he ran into her in the main hall then so be it, but he wasn't going to go looking for her.

The Institute wasn't controlling him tonight, so he had to make the best of his time. If others were right then had nothing to worry about anyway, but he'd been through enough here already that he wasn't willing to trust their word. He'd stopped to take a brief look into the F block, but now he bagn moving again, striding purposefully toward the main hall.

The halls were just as he had left them, but Lelouch barely even acknowledged that as he swept through them, his head held high. If he was going to travel to the hallway where Nunnally was being held, he was going to need backup-- an unpleasant prospect, after the way the last attempt had gone, but he had a solution in mind for that. It fit perfectly with the way he was carrying himself and his silent declaration from just a few moments ago, and really, what more reason could he need than that?

"You," he said shortly, calling the attention of some red-haired man he didn't know. He had enough presence of mind to think that he needed to do this quickly so that his target would forget him later and to choose someone with whom he had no prior attachment, but that was all. "Follow me and do as I say. We have somewhere we must go."

By the time he'd reached the hallway for the girl's block, other patients had started filtering out. He just caught a side glance at the sick ninja-girl from the morning's bus ride as he went, but ignored her. It was good to know others were still here, but he wasn't thrilled enough to want to deal with anyone for it, especially that girl.

So he continued on, through the hallway and through the next doorway.

Donna only just gave her roommate a "see ya" before heading out of her room and straight out to the larger hallways. After last night's fiasco or getting nothing done while having the spaceman, she wanted to remedy that by not wasting any time. Unfortunately though, once she got to the hallway, she found neither hide nor hair of the man.

"Well of course not!" she barked, pressing clenched fists into the waist. As though the Doctor would appear when she wanted him to. Just like last time, he was proving to be terrible at doing what she wanted needed him to!

Tapping her foot a bit, Donna stared down the vacant wall space a moment, huffed, and eventually turned off towards the main hallway. If he wasn't there, he wasn't there, and she certainly wasn't going to spent her night waiting for his skinny rear to get in gear. If she found him on her own, then fine, but otherwise she was sure to find someone who wouldn't mind teaming up for the night. They were always on about it on the bulletin board after all.

There were notably less people in this hall, which made getting around a bit easier. Not that it would have mattered anyway--the door he needed was just around the corner, so there was no real need to walk very far. Battler pulled the door open, making his was into the female block.

Almost there, and still, nothing in particular had struck Lelouch as off or odd tonight. A false alarm, perhaps? No, it was more likely that the Head Doctor had been talking about something in one of the other parts of the institute. That was a relief; there would be less of a chance that he would encountered it with Nunnally. There was no guarantee that it would be as bad as the zombies that the two of them had missed by a hair earlier that evening, but it could always be close.

There were only two directions to go on from here; left, which eventually led to outside, and right, which were even more hallways. The decision wasn't hard to make.

"There was thunder, so I bet it's still raining out," Yukari told Aigis, peering over her shoulder as she spoke. "I'm not really up to getting wet, so maybe we should stay inside tonight."

[identity profile] no-dont-go.livejournal.com 2010-05-17 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
The weather had been growing worse throughout the day, and by the sounds that echoed through the halls it wasn't letting up any time soon. She agreed with Yukari that she would rather stay inside, but not only for comfort's sake. After all, they could not confront the head doctor if they were moving away from him.

"I have yet to be outside at night," the android admitted, following close to Yukari as they continued on. Thinking on Yukari's words, it sounded as though the girl had been able to exit the institute in the past. But if she were still here, there had to be a reason she had returned. "I suppose just escaping from the building itself does not guarantee you will be able to leave, correct? Is there some sort of guard posted outside?"

Tifa left after her roommate, walking swiftly down the narrow hallways with purpose. She didn't get the chance to scope out the bar at Doyleton and so, unless Rude grabbed something, they would just have to start from scratch with the institute's leavings. Which was not any kind of set back truly, the brunette was fine handling a bit more work. She really had nothing better to do anyways.

But who knows, maybe the Turk had grabbed something and that was where she was headed. She crept quietly through the hallways, body tense with alert, listening for anything particularly devious slipping around.

Again reaching the door before the other, Brook went through first and held it open. He may no longer have been a gentleman skeleton, but he could still be half of one in some respects!

"I've been playing for years and years, and not just the violin," he explained, "Although that was once the only option for me. For a long time it was just the violin and myself..." And the remains of his friends. "But things have changed since then! I've met some wonderful people and have been traveling with them as their musician ever since! Yohohoho! Ah, well barring this place." He added with a grin unbefitting of the situation.

Minato stepped into the next hallway, looking back at Brook as he listened to his story. The only option for him. A long time with just his violin. It painted such a desolate mental image for someone who spoke so cheerfully.

But it seemed like there was a silver lining to his story, and Minato could tell from the way the man spoke that his fortune had changed. He briefly wondered if Brook had anyone from his world here.

"Have you been here long?" That seemed to be a fairly important question to ask whenever he met someone new. He fell silent waiting for Brook's answer as he quickly moved towards the main hallway.

She couldn't believe she'd forgotten something so simple! If she'd had her own clothes and her own belongings it wouldn't have mattered. She always had a compact or something in her possession that had a brush she could use, specially for the purpose of fingerprinting on the go. What woman didn't carry such a thing? This place had thrown her off, however. That was it. It was all Landel's fault and his complete lack of understanding of the basic necessities!

With one hand gripping the flashlight tighter with every step she took, Franziska stalked forward through the halls. She needed to get somewhere that they had brushes. Either upstairs or to the Arts and Crafts room. Perhaps that would actually be the better idea since it was closer and she had less chance of getting delayed by some foolish monster attack.

Leela was sure there was advanced technology somewhere in the Institute, or nearby. One thing she wasn't sure of was what it would look like. A room full of universe boxes, maybe, from which they could drag people out. She imagined fishing poles with different kinds of bait, dangling into other worlds from this one, and chuckled, feeling less freaked. Not that she had been. Lana was just as glad to drop the subject; she would have preferred not to bring it up at all, but sympathy was a powerful tool for influencing people.

That was why she had shut it out; there was no room for error in what she'd done, and anything that set her off-balance could be fatal. To Ema; she already had confirmation that she would not escape the wave of evidence she'd left behind. It was mounting, and gaining, and the undertow was lined with despair and old secrets.

She slowed to listen to the rumblings of thunder. It wasn’t just suspecting that Professor Stein had become another victim of this place that had her balanced on a knife’s edge. The storm that had descended on the area was angry and cold and suffocating, adding to the Institute’s inhospitable atmosphere. Adding to the wrongness she felt.

Had the been a part of the Head Doctor’s plan all along? Tsubaki didn’t know.

What she did know was that this night already reminded her of the one she’d ended bleeding from a wound she’d inflicted on another, on her brother who’d looked at her with those tortured eyes. One where the very air had seemed hushed. It was a feeling she’d heed, because she knew better than to not. But even knowing there could be painful consequences to walking blindly on, could that stop her? No.

More than ever, the answer was no. There were people waiting upstairs.

"Right," Edgar replied, spotting far more women moving about the hall than in previous areas. They had to be getting close. If this hall mirrored the men's hallways, the next left would lead to the female blocks. Celes' room would be on the same hall his was on the other side of the wing.

"What sort of training do you have, exactly?" he asked, curious. Soldiers from other worlds were bound to have training he'd never even conceived. It was an interesting thought that he'd be able to learn something to take back to Figaro... granted it hadn't truly been buried forever by the Light of Judgment. Gren was doing his best to keep a mental map of where they were going, but in the dark, especially, it all sort of looked the same to him. Edgar seemed to know where they were headed, though, and that was good enough for now.

"Light Infantry for the Martian army," he replied. "Close combat and weapons training, mostly. Nothing too fancy, I'm afraid. We don't have magic where I'm from, unless you count guys pulling rabbits out of hats." His service record had been utterly unremarkable, up until the end of the war. "How about you?" It wouldn't hurt to learn a little about his roommate, especially if he was going to trust him to lead him around like this.

So far it wasn't too busy. Hopefully she hadn't lost many of those first precious minutes. Either the halls were only just beginning to fill, or she was one of the last to leave. Of course, she supposed it didn't really help that they were heading to Kakashi's room first tonight. Either they'd find the Jounin asleep with a book over his face, or a list of excuses for being so lazy.

She sighed to herself as she crept along the walls, the light from the other patient's beams was more than enough to see by. Anyway, it wasn't like she hadn't memorized the map. She ought to be able to make it with her eyes closed if she had to.

If he was lucky, he'd run into someone he knew before he got too far and he wouldn't have to hustle all the way to M4, but he couldn't count too hard on that.

Maybe it was because he had something to do tonight, or maybe because he just had an extremely aggravating green haired pest tailing him, but Rolo was feeling more impatient than usual. The hallways seemed to be stretching on forever and his back felt far too exposed for him to be comfortable with. Why did these kinds of things always happen to him when he had something important to do?

Tolerance was something Rolo was never taught, so having to learn it was rather difficult. But... he couldn't jeopardize something like a request from his brother, so Rolo was just going to have to grin and bear it.

In fact, his efficiency was somewhat surprising, but he wasn't about to condone the brunet for being a little faster than what he expected. Instead he ignored Spike's obvious implications of annoyance and continued along his way as if his company was actually wanted. This included sparking up some conversation, even though it was expected that the latter would ignore him for no reason. Really, how could the kid expect to get allies with an attitude like that?
