Night 47: F-A Block Hallway

( from here. )

One thing Kairi couldn't help but admit was that her room now was a lot closer to the door than her old one was. It was practically a hop, skip, and a jump away! Not bad at all.

... Not that she was lazy or anything. She wasn't the lazy one of the group. Certainly not.

Either way, Kairi continued down the hallway and out the door with ease, careful to watch her step.

The night was far progressed by the time she was out in the halls. The rumor that something would be heard on the radios was true, she could hear the sounds of someone talking through static as she passed people's rooms. For a moment, Franziska considered going back to grab her own radio, but she decided against it. Whatever clues this person was giving out, she doubted they'd be of any use to her. She had a mission to complete and she wasn't going to deviate from it unless it provided greater rewards than the completion of her case.

The box was secured under her right arm and in her left hand, she carried her flashlight. Now all that remained was to get upstairs and start creating her powder.

Gumshoe picked his gaze up off the floor when he entered the F Block. Now that his mind was on the investigation, he wanted to know all there was to know about it. The sooner they got hard evidence, the sooner they could bring Mr. von Karma in for questioning, so to speak. He squared his shoulders and gave a hard smile.

Right. So, having failed his only task for the day--his smile faded almost as quickly as it had appeared--he had to report back to Ms. von Karma. He tried not to think about how she would react (that was easier said than done) by considering the block's layout. F23 hadn't been down that hallway, so maybe he ought to try--

Hey, who was that? He pointed his flashlight at the person nearby and froze. Th-that was fast! "Ms. von Karma...?"

A flashlight was bouncing down the hall and Franziska stepped to the side to avoid it. The last thing she needed was some idiot coming to see someone in this hall running into her and asking directions. She didn't care to direct someone to a room when she had far more important things to do. The flashlight followed her, however, and she frowned as it alighted on her, forcing her to bring up a hand to cover her eyes just in case.

It wasn't until she heard the voice that she realized who had been looking for someone and her frown deepened. "Get that thing out of my face, Detective!"

And where had he been?! Wasn't he supposed to be watching Miles or something like that? He always liked to talk about how he was her brother's partner or some rubbish like that, so why had he disappeared under the Detective's watch? "What are you doing here?"

Yeah, that was her alright. "Oh, s-sorry, sir," he said, quickly lowering the flashlight and walking over to her.

"Um..." The detective frowned, a little confused by the question. Even when he did what she asked, he messed up. "You told me to report back to you." If he put off telling her any longer, he was going to be in more trouble than if he said it outright, so he may as well say it outright. "Remember the scar I mentioned? Well, I went to his room to confirm it, but Mr. Edgeworth wasn't there."

Oh dammit, so that was why he was here! Franziska felt the stab of her own forgetfulness like a physical blow, jerking slightly and sending the things in her box rattling against each other softly. So that was what he'd been doing and why he was late. And that also meant he hadn't seen that Lelouch Lamperouge's message.

"He has been released," she said, voice tight as she stepped forward, up next to the Detective. Their victim was gone, but the case had to continue. "I confirmed with two sources and you are the third. Miles Edgeworth is gone."

As much as she hated to put that truth to voice and make it materialize, she had no choice. "There is nothing we can do besides finish this case and then find him and bring him back to his senses." Franziska was amazed sometimes at how self-assured she could sound. The strength in her voice sounded odd to her, like it was somehow coming from someone else. Holding the box in her hands out to the detective, she fixed a steady gaze on him, daring to disobey her order. "We are going to make fingerprint powder. Any objections?"

Released? It went through one ear and almost made it out the other, but he managed to hear it just in time. This... This was great news! They had let him go! Mr. Edgeworth was free! Gumshoe wanted to believe it so much that he totally forgot the only reason they released anyone here was if they ended up believing they were someone they weren't.

When he noticed Ms. von Karma's sudden change of tone, he was confused at first, but then he started to remember. Still... he was at a loss, made obvious by the fact he hadn't said a word. Those two were like siblings. How could she doubt her own sibling?

What she said next made it clear that she did. So what she was saying was, Mr. Edgeworth had stopped believing he was Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth?

"Mr. Edgeworth would never believe Dr. Landel, sir!" he insisted, his voice getting louder. It didn't matter what anyone else thought; he would always trust Mr. Edgeworth! Having gotten that out of his system, he scratched his head. "Maybe he thought there was no other way," he added hopefully. "Maybe he fooled them into thinking that he thought... whatever they wanted him to think!" Because it was times like this that he came up with a plan, and the only reason he wouldn't have told them about it was if he hadn't needed their help.

He numbly dropped his flashlight into the box before taking it in both hands, not really knowing what it was for; he was way too wound up by the suggestion that Mr. Edgeworth had switched sides. The question sailed right over his head, which, along with his shoulders, had drooped. He didn't know if he was right, but he'd do anything to prove it to her.

When she'd spoken about objections, she had hardly meant against Miles' disappearance. Either the man had died and they had a murder case and no body on their hands, or he'd been brainwashed and he was believing their lies. Either way, Franziska was going to find him and drag him back. There was no way she'd win like this. Without having a definite victory, seeing his stunned and defeated face and knowing it was him, anything she did was hollow.

With the box out of her hands, Franziska pulled the dog leash down off her shoulder and tightened it between her hands. As much as Franziska hated Miles' disappearance, it was apparent Gumshoe was taking it harder. They had been partners for much longer, after all, and the Detective looked up to her little brother in an almost annoying fashion. Annoying because she knew that if she disappeared, no one would look like he did now. She hated that about Miles. He always had someone. To cover up her own realizations, Franziska snapped her fingers and started down the hall. "Pull yourself together, Detective. We have work to do. If you're going to fool yourself, do it on your own time."

Yukari yawned again. Either she was early or late, as there were few others about. Somehow, she doubted the former. Ah, well. She had needed that nap. Not particularly worried at how tardy she was, the youkai continued on her merry way.
