Night 46: Main Hallway, 1-West

[from here]

Beatrix had walked this path to the Sun Room so many times, she could do it in complete darkness. Which was exactly what she was doing. Knowing the way, there was little need for light as it would only draw creatures and other unwanted attention. Silently counting her steps, at the right number, the assassin headed left and down the hallway.

"Oh, this?" Ayumu glanced down at the napkin-wrapped cake in her hand as though she'd forgotten that it was there, then shrugged slightly and held up the bag in her other hand and shook it just a little, just enough to make the contents shift with a soft metallic click. "Why would you want cake when you can have this?"

Even in the darkness they weren't safe from prying eyes, and she kept her senses alert even as she teased him. There were far too many people in the hallway to do otherwise (though even if it had been empty of people, the possibility of other occupants still would've kept her wary) and a moment ago she'd heard someone cry out. If a fight was about to start, she wanted to be well away from it.

How cruel of her! Intentionally, yes, but still! She knew he wanted it and there she was trying to be all professional. Honestly, what a silly girl. Okita glanced from the cake to the bag that likely held the items Homura requested from him. His gaze lingered on the pillowcase for a moment longer and then slowly slid back to the cake. "I don't have to choose one or the other, do I--"

His question was cut off when he heard the cry from down the hall, causing him to snap his head to attention. The night was still relatively early, but it seemed as though the creatures were already out. Or worse, people were already attacking each other. Narrowing his eyes against the dark, Okita took a step closer to Ayumu and then returned his gaze to her, smiling. "It certainly is dangerous out here, hm? What plans do you have tonight?"

"Nothing terribly interesting," Ayumu replied, smiling despite her wary alertness, her attention halfway on the darkness around them. It was generally not a good idea to stand in the same place for long, whether it was night here or night in Kyoto, even though the potential dangers differed between the two. "Merely exploration."

She held out both hands toward him, allowing him to choose which of her burdens he wanted to take first. Both were intended for him, but still, she couldn't help but continue teasing. "Though I'll need to be rid of these before I move on...."

"Hm? Is that so?" His question was more of a veiled concern, something he'd never been able to erase since seeing her again. While he knew she was more than capable of taking care of herself, the memory of her funeral was still an open wound and the last thing he wanted to do was have another. After a moment, he smiled again and nodded. "That might be a good way to pass the evening."

It was likely that she already knew he was meeting with Homura and Kenren for...something. What it was, Okita had no idea, but meeting at Adel's room was an interesting locale. He wasn't sure if they were simply using that as a meeting spot, or if Adel was making them more weapons. This also raised the question of where the boy had been lately, as Okita hadn't seen him during the day.

But then Ayumu went and distracted him from his thoughts, offering both the cake and the bag at the same time. Did he do the responsible thing and take the bag? Or did he do what he really wanted? With only a moment's hesitation, Okita reached out and nipped the cake out of Ayumu's hand, grinning wide. It'd been an easy choice, really. "Then I'll go ahead and get rid of these-" Here, he finally took the bag, the contents clinking slightly despite his efforts to keep it quiet. "--off your hands. Thank you."

It wasn't as though she'd never worked alone - that was often the nature of the job, given who and what she was. But somehow Okita's question indicated concern, as though he was actually worried about her safety that evening. Ayumu silently filed that away with the other evidence for her suspicions and only smiled in response. "Yes, I thought so. I prefer to trust my own observations over a mere map."

And of course he went right for the cake. No surprises there, but she was still amused nonetheless. She absently brushed her hands off against her coat once she was rid of her burdens and just shook her head. "You're welcome. And you be careful too, hmm?" If they were going to be heading down to the basement, they'd need to, from what she'd read.

The maps were good, yes, but as the History Club had proven, some places remained unwritten. If Homura had discovered the room upstairs, then what else had people discovered and kept to themselves? The basement was open knowledge now, especially since someone had been so unwise as to write how to open the place on the board; but it had also yielded far too many dangers. And far too many consequences. So what else was locked away in people's heads, sealed behind closed lips? He supposed Ayumu was the best person to find that out, given her skills. Laughing a little, Okita said, "Yes, it's always wiser to rely on personal observations than the general word of mouth."

But do be careful. There are things here that not even I can fight. - was what he wanted to say, but he held his tongue and slipped the pillowcase over his shoulder, feeling the weight of the weapons inside press into his back. They were a cautious reminder that his night was going to be a dangerous one; which would be normal, if it weren't for the situation. "I promise!" he chirped out, cheerful despite it all. The cake in his hand certainly helped his mood at least. "I'll see you in the morning, yes?"

And with that, Okita waved ever so carefully with the cake filled hand and headed off toward Adel's room.

Now the first task of the evening was accomplished; time to move on to the second. Ayumu paused a moment longer, listening to the traffic in the hallway to assure herself that the pathway was clear, and only then moved on. It was far easier to make her way now unburdened, and it was the matter of a moment before she reached the door for which she was aiming.
