Day 43: Intercom, Evening
Hello! I.R.I.S. here once more to announce to you, our honored guests, that you have officially made it through a day of our typical Landel's treatment. Of course, it isn't quite over: we will now have you retire to our designated patient quarters with one of your agency partners to inspect their sleeping area and the tools that we provide them with for the true bulk of our behavioral testing. On an added note, we would like you to notice once again that the meals we provide to our subjects are of the highest quality.
For those of you feeling apprehensive about taking part in our more intensive methods, please be aware that we would never imagine putting all of you in any danger whatsoever. This last shift will be your last at our Institute; afterward, we will escort you to our Head Doctor's personal observation station to survey some of our test Next-Wave participants in the rigorous trials we put them through – all for their betterment, of course.
Once again, we hope that you are satisfied with what you find, and as always, direct any questions you may have to your console.

He pushed himself off the bed and onto his knees, peering under the bedframe to find the weapon from last night. ...Strange. Had he really rolled the bat that far under the bed? No matter. He pressed himself closer to the ground, arm reaching for the bat--
...
He shouldn't have turned around.
He could feel his body tensing more and more with each word his cellmate said, the same disgust and hatred crawling up his spine, this time without the added comfort of seeing the face the voice belonged to. His fingers found the handle of the bat and they instinctively curled around it, the splinters from the already cracked wood digging into his skin. He did not have to kill him. It would just be a quick, relatively painless blow to his throat. He could do it without causing life-threatening damage or spilling a single drop of blood, but the paralysis of the man's vocal folds would make life more difficult for him. There would be no loss on the assassin's side, however. Just one little...
It took a minute, but he pushed those thoughts away as much as possible, pulling the bat out from its hiding spot and pulling himself back up to face his roommate with a disapproving stance. It was enough he heard that parasite whenever Takasugi spoke. He did not need the man to be a bastard on top of it.
"I'm sorry, but I don't think that's any of your business, Mr. Shinsuke." He tilted his head to the side, letting the bottom of the bat brush against the floor as he spoke. "Perhaps it would be preferable to the both of us if you minded your own?"

There was no reason to react or panic, yet. The time was coming close for the doors to be unlocked and for him to have his false sense of freedom again. At least he already knew what path he could take to get where he needed to go. The trouble was traveling there without any more incidents, and it seemed as if he was being forced to play it safe with this one for the moment.
"Very well," he conceded, giving in for now and falling silent as he waited for the night to descend upon them. There would be further opportunity to find out more from him later, provided he managed to survive this night, as well. Only time would properly dictate his fate.
