Day 22: Brunch

Cid usually liked sleeping in, especially in a place as messed up and uninviting as this, but this happened to be one situation where he really wished he hadn't.

Right there, on the bulletin board. The Head Doctor and he'd fucking missed it? Some part of him wished he'd been there to take his eye out and another part of him knew he wouldn't have been able to. No man that powerful who hid for so long went to dangerous places without some kind of entourage.

Brunch sounded like it'd be filling, at least, though he nearly stopped in his tracks when the bastard announced TEA. TEA. It'd been a damn long while since he'd had some fucking tea, though with all the stress this place had found fit to rain down on his fucking head, it hadn't really been the first priority on his mind. Kinda nice, even if Cid was sure this was just some game the mother fucker was playing to get them all stuck neck-deep in Stockholm Syndrome.

He scanned the mostly-empty room for any sign of a familiar face once he'd piled waffles and sausages and syrup on his plate, though the person he really wanted to talk to was that Reynolds guy. "Spaceship" was the last word he remembered clearly before waking up in his bed, and dammit if he wasn't going to keep it stuck like glue in his mind.

He found a table where he could watch people come into the cafeteria and grabbed for his mug. The steam rising from his drink and the bag of herbs in it was nearly enough to make him grin despite it all, and it was with marked leisure and a little relief that he drank his goddamn tea.

Zabuza looked at the orderly. He grinned, exposing his sharpened teeth. It wasn't a joyful or happy expression. He felt excited by the idea of a challenge. This man even looked like he could hold his own. Much more satisfying than a woman.

He glanced at Haku as the boy moved and made a slightly amused sound.

"Oh...?" he asked the orderly, still grinning. "And what kind of punishment would you give me?" he sneered as he spoke.

If the patient was going to get smart with him, the orderly felt he had the license to return that attitude. He crossed his arms over his chest and smirked.

"Sedate you and put you in the solitary for the rest of the day. Then you won't even be able to watch him from the other side of the room." He hadn't missed the fact that Christopher was trying to maneuver around to get to the other man, and was prepared to take action if the younger one got too close.

Haku paused far enough away to keep clear of the large uniformed man, but still able to be heard.

"Please, calm down." He knew that his Master had been given a different name, but until he knew what it was, he had to deal with the insult of not addressing Zabuza-san properly and by name.

This, of course, didn't mean he wouldn't try to jump in should things go from worse to HUGE MESS.

Zabuza was about to challenge the orderly openly, but Haku's voice made him hesitate. He looked at the boy, ignoring the orderly completely. All hostility was taken from his demeanor and voice though.

"Tell me what happened to your face," he said, eyes narrowing. It wasn't a request. He didn't care what the man in the uniform would do to him for saying it either.

The two were distanced, at least, and the orderly figured that they could have a small clarifying conversation before he would be forced to lead Christopher away. (If the nurse had been around, she probably wouldn't have allowed even this much, but he thought the nurses tend to be wound a little too tight sometimes.) He was at the ready, waiting to see how the boy would respond before he made any sort of action.

Haku glanced at the orderly then back to Zabuza-san. lie now would save everyone trouble. Well, it wouldn't save him any trouble, but Haku was used to that around his Master. He always seemed to attract trouble.

"I can't recall," he said, voice soft and pitched to sound slightly scared. With luck, Zabuza-san would know he was lying... and with a miracle, he wouldn't call him on it and make an even bigger scene.

Haku was acting scared, that much Zabuza caught onto. The boy had no reason to be scared. He was strong. He could handle a lot.

Zabuza looked back at the orderly, picturing what it would be like to kill the man. But if Haku was acting for now... maybe he should too. Zabuza had no problem playing along, for a little while.

"I'll find out who did this to you then," he said, and he meant it. "And I'll kill them."

He gave the orderly a contemptuous look, daring him to challenge the ninja again.

The orderly could have argued that, once again, Christopher had probably just mutilated himself, but he realized that wasn't going to help the situation. Mr. Fortune had calmed, if only slightly.

"Fine," he responded. "Just keep away from each other." After all, who said he would ever find a real culprit and be able to hurt them? They would just have to monitor the situation in the event that the older man had any outbursts. There had already been a few fights in the cafeteria thus far - sedating the man if he continued to act out wouldn't be a big deal.

Haku bowed slightly in response to the uniformed man. "I understand," he said with a sigh. He wished he knew exactly why they were to be kept apart, but that was something for later consideration.

For now, he had to figure out how to get around it. He couldn't simply stand by calmly while his Master, the man he'd thought dead, the man he'd failed stood before him.

Haku turned and moved to go back to his seat.

It was the most difficult thing he ever had to do.

Zabuza watched Haku leave and scowled at him.

It irritated him that the boy hadn't even tried to protest. He gave the orderly another snort of disapproval and then stalked off. He wasn't hungry, even now that he knew he wasn't dead, but now he had to figure out just where this was... and without Haku.
