Dayshift 42: Bus 2
Before anyone could come to any decisions for their next move, the room suddenly filled with a thick fog. Faster than he could realize what was happening, it had filled up the entire room and swallowed every single one of his friends. Then there was that undeniable stench of iron, blood and... he last remembered taking a step back and feeling that slippery skid and the realization of what that was. By the time he yelled, he was sitting straight up in his bed like he'd bolted awake. Like it'd been nothing more than a bad dream. ...What the hell just happened?!
"Oh! Good morning!" The nearby voice made him yelp with a half squeak-like noise. Oh, for hell's sake. It was one of those freaking nurses again. She was beaming at him like nothing had happened at all. Before he could so much as ask one question, the hag started blathering real fast about some field trip and buses and getting changed and hurrying up before everyone left without him and... OH MY GOD, WHAT WAS SHE DOING?! She was grabbing at his shirt like she was about to start helping him get dressed (or undressed in this case).
He flailed in a desperate attempt to get away from her and yelled his consent to go along if she would get out and let him change HIMSELF. What was the matter with her?! Thankfully, she left but told him to hurry. Hell if he knew what she'd do if he took too long. So for the sake of not getting freaking stripped, he quickly changed into the clothes she'd left on the bed. Clothes being the ugliest looking white-and-black track pants he'd ever seen and a bright blue sweatshirt with a cute little penguin design on the front. This was some kind of joke, right? ...Not to say the penguin wasn't cute or anything but there was no way, no way, he was wearing something like this in public.
But the nurse had burst right in again, and before Kanji could offer much protest, he was being pulled down the hallways and through the doors of the bus. He'd yelled some things her way, but she totally wasn't listening at all. By the time they stopped, he was standing at the front of the bus with a paper bag and the nurse had run off to cart another poor sap along. Frickin' PERFECT. For the sake of not standing up there like some kind of zoo animal for everyone to stare at, he plopped himself into one of the seats by the front and sighed in complete exasperation.

Wait. Did he mention ice-cream? She stared at him with wide eyes. "You have a coupon for ice-cream?" Hastily reaching into her pocket she pulled out the coupon book the nurse gave her. There really was a coupon for ice-cream. "So that's what these coupons are for...Oh, You don't have to give me your ice-cream coupon, since I'll probably drop it." She gave him a small smile. "Otherwise the ants will have both our ice-creams."
no subject
He'd have given her his coupon anyway since he wasn't too fond of sweets but maneuvering it out of his pocket wasn't a bright prospect at the moment. "That's ok. So this is your first time seeing the town?" Time to distract Weepy Girl with a tactical change of topic.

Wiping off the remaining tears with her sleeve she ate her breakfast slowly, listening to the man. "Yep...um, I'm Chise by the way. I hope they have a water park nearby because I really want to see the dolphins and seals. Do they have a water park or at least a zoo in the town?" she asked.
no subject
Water parks? Zoos? Well, he couldn't say the nightshift creatures were cute and huggable and little girls probably liked that kind of thing... Probably. Nill might not, and she was the only other young girl he really knew. Well, whatever.
"Not that I know of. They've got parks? With...trees and shit." Yeah, exciting stuff. "I'm Badou. Your name sounds weird so I'm going to call you Cheese."
no subject
Her expression fell as Badou answered her question. So the town didn't have any water parks, or zoos for that matter. Guess she'll have to resort to buying a stuffed animal. Oh wait. She had no money or coupons that could get her a plush toy.
"What?" Did he just called her cheese? "B-but my name is Chise. It's not hard to remember, is it?" Luffy had called her that once, but that was because she made fun of his name. She looked like she was gonna start crying at any moment. "I-If my name sounds weird, t-then your sounds weird too!"
no subject
"Come on Cheese, don't take it so hard. I'm just kidding, ok? Don't be so high-strung." There was something wrong about Badou telling someone not to be high-strung. He reached over to pat her on the head because that kind of worked for Arty, and he was the only other kid Badou really knew and pretty much a girl anyway. "You can call me whatever you want except eyepatch. It's just a nickname."
Change of topic time again. "Your world must be nice if you cry that easily. So what's your story? Rich parents?"
no subject
When Chise felt a pat on her head, she was caught off-guard. She never expected Badou to do anything like that. Maybe a 'stupid' or 'idiot', but never a pat on the head.
She shook her head. "I just happen to cry all the time, and it's not because of my world or family. With the war going on only the military has the most money, spending it on weapons, jets, and tanks. As for my parents, my mother works everyday just to feed the family and my father only stares at the TV and hasn't said a word since the war started. The last time I checked was before I left the town. I occasionally check their bio-signs to see if they're doing okay, or dead."
Taking out her pack of pills, Chise wondered if she should take them now, or later. It wouldn't be pretty if she took them now, so might as well take them later.

He was actually pretty surprised by that story - to the point of wondering if this kid was on serious meds. He didn't think she was lying but it was weird. She said all of that just looking a little uneasy and she'd nearly burst into tears over a silly nickname. Bi-polar maybe? Traumatized? Whatever the word was for war trauma.
Continuing with his record of changing the topic from bad to worse, Badou glanced at the little pack she'd just taken out. "What's that for?"
no subject
Anyway, talking about the war back home wasn't difficult for her. It was part of her life and she fought in it. She was used to it.
"Oh, this? It's my medicine, I only need to take it during meals everyday. The after-effects make me feel light-headed for a little moment."
no subject
"It's not a good idea to judge people based on that. You might end up trusting the wrong person or hurting someone who's trying to help you out. Just be careful."
Of course, when she explained what she was holding the 'on serious meds' theory became a little more valid too. "They actually give you medicine? What's it supposed to be for?"
no subject
Eyeing at the pills in her hand she debated whether to tell Badou or not. On one hand she could tell him, which would lead her to explain about being a weapon and another litre of tears, or she could give him a vague reason. Since they've just met it would be best if he didn't know the truth.
"They're suppose to keep me living, otherwise something bad will happen." That sounded vague enough.
no subject
As for the pills, he was tempted to ask her more about the side effects after all but this might be one of those times when it was better to keep his mouth shut.
