Nightshift 40: F-A Block Hallway

[from here]

Harley clicked on her flashlight and checked back and forth as she usually did. All clear. Alright-e-o! She moved as quickly as she could down the hallway. No monsters and no other people yet. She knew that changed pretty quickly around here so best to get a move on.

Like every night before, the trek to the women's rooms had been short and sweet. It didn't mean things were winding down, no, but this bit of luck was always good. Better if this luck lasted throughout the entire night, but Ken wasn't going to hold out for such fortune.

F3... F3... The room had to be on the hallway at the end of this one, according to his map. He shouldn't have any trouble for the room itself; the child only hoped he hadn't arrived too late.

If Ururu had been thinking, she might have realized that she could be hurting Ken without tightly she held his hand. She might have thought about finding Fai-san or Keman, and telling them what she now knew. She might have thought a lot of things, but just then, all she could think about was the fact that two more people were gone, and not just any two. Orihime and Shiki had worked hard to make Lost and Found more than just people who argued. They wanted to find their friends, and they wanted to be a team.

So what would happen now that they were gone?

Ururu didn't stop until she was at the end of the hall. Then she finally let go of Ken's hand, only to cover her own face. "They're gone!" The tears came out with the words, and Ururu shook as she stood there crying. "Orihime-san and Shiki-san are gone too, and now everyone's going to fight more, and how can we find anyone if all we do is fight each other?! Why are they gone?!"

This wasn't right. This wasn't how things were supposed to be.

[identity profile] rectifies.livejournal.com 2009-04-18 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
Effort and concentration kept Ken from wincing openly at being dragged down the hall. Those fingers locked securely around his own might have belonged more to man than little girl, given their strength. If the situation was different, he might have questioned how this was possible. Instead, his mind went blank from confusion.

Shiki was gone, and Ururu was crying. Ken didn't know how he was supposed to process and handle both. Even if he had secretly expected the former, the boy couldn't bring himself to rationalize the situation.

"Ururu-san, I..." His gaze dropped to the floor, his mind at a loss on how to respond.

It seemed she was out early again; not many people around. Good; Yukari didn't particularly feel like dealing with the noise of others. Now, where could she get outside?

Going over the mental map in her head, the youkai was dismayed to note how hard it was to recall what went where. She knew there was a courtyard somewhere. That might be a nice place to just relax, gaze at the moon, make some faces at the lunarians. But where was it?

Sun Room. She recalled that you could probably get most anywhere from the Sun Room. She'd figure it out from there. Yeah, that sounded like a plan.

Mele had reached another hallway before sighing and leaning against a wall (doorway? It didn't matter). Couldn't be avoided. She closed her eyes.

This was slightly—okay, a lot—nasty, but she could still feel it. The aura of the screaming of Rinju Fists....

A moment more, and Mele was able to withstand it enough to detect that— Huh. It was still there, but if she pulled away from it, it got fainter. Mele tapped her forehead. Well, she'd never been the best at sensing ki, anyway. Maybe it was all her imagination?

...She doubted it. Even so. So I panicked last night because I was imagining things. That bitch Long...I'm going to kill him.

Mele straightened and peered down the hallway. She'd probably need her flashlight for this. Mele held it up for scrutiny. Apparently her panicking last night had lent her temporary night vision. Unless it was another trick.

She shrugged. Well, can't get along without it now. Mele flicked it on and aimed its beam at the ground a few feet away (instead of straight ahead), making sure not to stare directly at the beam, and started walking.

Anise wasn't exactly looking forward to a Cake Club meeting, but she was looking forward to the company that would be there. A whole room full of nothing but rich kids... how lucky could a girl get? Normally a get-together like that would be pretty exclusive.

And she was kind of curious to see what the other group had baked, too.

Without delay, Anise made her way through the hallways and out of the girls' block.

Celes had little doubt that she would be early to the meeting. Though the night had started, there were few people in the main hallway. Resigned to waiting, Celes leaned against the wall and examined her knife. It was beginning to dull, and likely wouldn't last much longer unless she found herself a whetstone. Her smile was cynical, knowing there was little chance of it magically appearing before her.

It was times like these that Celes wished she could just get inside a MagiTek armor and go crunching through the halls. A pity no one seemed to have one spare and handy.

Her flashlight beam trained in front of her as she turned the corner into the next hallway, it didn't take Utena long to spot the woman in yellow. Her contact found, that was one less thing to worry about. "You're Miss Chere?" she asked as she approached. "I'm Utena Tenjou. Pleased to meet you, and glad to be working with you," she introduced herself, putting one hand casually on her hip and giving a respectful nod of her head.

Raine got to the main hallway and just waited; she really hoped Reinforce wouldn't take long to join her, and not just for the usual reasons. Why hadn't she seen Tamaki all day? Why hadn't he answered Kratos' note?

She would also feel a lot better if she knew why Sheena wouldn't be joining them tonight. She could accept that the reason was personal, but to not even have a hint as to what was going on... she trusted the ninja, but that wasn't the point.

Rein again found Raine already waiting for her in the hall, this time without her friend. Raine looked worried... had they planned to meet? She hadn't read the bulletin since lunch and couldn't know if they'd talked.

"Hello," Rein said as reached Raine. "Is something bothering you?"

It was a presumption she saw no harm in making, so she wasted no time.

Ophelia found her way by the light of other patients' flashlights, and soon found herself standing outside the door to the women's bathroom. It had been strange upon arrival, first accepting that she would have to deal with human bowel functions on a semi-regular basis, and then accepting that she had to sit on a strange, porcelain "toilet" in order to do said dealing. Now she was somewhat used to it, if not completely pleased.

Keeping to the shadows inside the doorway just in case Arlene happened by, she waited for her contact.

Tsubaki noted the two other women in her hallway, aiming to mask her presence as she skirted by while at the same time moving in such a way to show she wasn’t hostile. She wondered what the ‘box’ was supposed to be as she made her way towards the mouth of the corridor, but once she reached the intersection, the majority of her attention returned to her breathing, her movement, and the presence of the others in the hallway out of instinct.

There were a few people, one of them being her roommate. When she looked closer, Tsubaki saw she was the same silver-haired woman from the night before. This time, she didn’t wave. They seemed involved, and it was a less secure place to do so--more open and exposed.

She couldn’t be sure, could she?

The bathroom doors were already open when she approached, and to make herself more noticeable, Tsubaki shifted out of the assassin mindset--something Black☆Star had never really been able to get into--and walked on with soft footfalls to reveal her position. Was someone there? When she got close enough, she paused. “Um… Ophelia-san?” she tried, quietly.

Up a hallway, down a hallway, and Senna knew this part. For some reason, tonight it reminded her of visiting Hitsugaya. Sobered by this, she continued. Working with the chief wasn't like working with Leader, but she should put her all into it all the same.

[[From F21-F30 Hall. (http://community.livejournal.com/damned/609834.html?view=50789162#t50789162)]]

As expected, the dark hall was busier than it had been last night. She hadn't been cheated out of her night this time...

It also wasn't as dark, with flashlight-bearing patients moving around, and... perhaps she was getting a bit better at seeing in the dark. As though the merely human faculties she now possessed had to adjust to the loss of their previous supernatural enhancement. What this implied about the nature of the change from a magical perspective would have been an interesting question for her to pursue had it not been symptomatic of the further decrease of her abilities from even what she'd had in Mahora in some areas, and therefore extremely aggravating to even thing about.

At any rate, she didn't need to worry about running into anything but an especially stealthy patient anymore... whether her vision was improving or not, she had a good feel for the hall's dimensions now, and her sense for her own position within it was excellent... you needed to be good at keeping track of that kind of stuff to make a decent combat mage and she was, of course, the best.

Daphne flicked her flashlight on and hurried down the hall, past a few small knots of people who had gathered, probably meeting allies for the night. She paid enough attention to note none of them looked familiar, though she hadn't really expected them to, and kept moving. There wasn't really anything for her to worry about out-pacing, but it still felt more comfortable than lingering in dark hallways any longer than she absolutely had to.

By the time Hanatarou reached the block he was out of breath and his headache was pounding even harder against his temples. He paused to lean against a wall for a minute, absently rubbing the back of his hand against his forehead as he took a second to recover.

Hopefully this "Colomar-san" wouldn't be too upset at being kept waiting. And hopefully she wouldn't be too badly hurt, either. He needed to conserve what reiatsu he had left, especially if he was supposed to go man the Clinic afterwards.

The entire hallway was almost pitch-black, curtesy of the flashlights held by a couple of people in the area. But it it was still scary travelling in the dark with no source of light to guide her. She positioned herself close to the wall, partially 'feeling' her way out to who knows where.

On her way out of the room--her room, she thought, sans personality and a ‘roommate’--Yomi turned on the flashlight in her hand, and once again surveyed the area while slowly meandering towards the exit. Change or no change, there wasn’t much to see. She’d learned a lot in only one night, a night that had ended more quickly than it should have.

This place was a cesspool for negative energy when the sun went down. The building reflected the effects.

The cell block itself was devoid of people like the prior night, but considering the number of bodies she‘d seen milling around that day, Yomi had thought the lack of foot traffic had been a fluke if everyone else was being released from their cage to wander around the same as her. Like rats, ha. A flat smile touched her mouth as she looked down each branch of hallway on her way by. There were a few presences that she could sense nearby, so she knew she wasn’t completely alone. They were more noticeable than the spectre that’d given her the injuries on her arm--in this after hours free-for-all, spectres had to be the ones she kept an eye out for, if they were all prone to attack.

Them, and also whoever was watching the rats run and setting out traps.

[following Daddy in from here (http://community.livejournal.com/damned/605600.html?thread=51263648#t51263648) for a talking to]

Harry had automatically followed his father into the empty adjoining hall, obedience too deeply ingrained for him to think of disobeying. His head was spinning as he tried to figure out just what the hell was going on here. His father was dead. He'd arranged the funeral himself, had spent almost all his time since then trying to get revenge on his murderer. But his father had also visited him here just days ago and had been alive and the same as ever. Now he was here, in front of him claiming he wanted to talk or more likely, he would talk and Harry was expected to listen.

This knowledge didn't stop Harry from asking nervously, "Dad? What's going on? Why are you here?"

"I could ask you the same thing, Harry," Norman answered, fixing his son with a condescending stare. "Particularly because you seem to have been here longer than I have. But from what I've heard, this Landel seems to think he can keep Norman Osborn somewhere against his will."

He smiled dangerously and there was a hint of too-sharp teeth for a moment.

"We'll have to show him why you don't challenge an Osborn." His gaze was more measuring now, knowing that the 'we' can't have been missed. "I need to know that I have people I can trust by my side," he continued. "People who are... worthy."

He let the silence stretch out between them for a while before opening his arms slightly in something that might have been an invitation for an embrace.

"What do you say, son?"
