Nightshift 39: Patient Possessions

[from here]

Well, the noise would certainly alert anything already inside, but there wasn’t much to be done about, now was there? He stepped inside and to the left, searching the darkness for movement, but…

Nothing had immediately jumped out to latch onto his face. That was a plus.

“Looking for the things from your other life?” he asked, turning to regard Leon. The obvious question. The doll, at least, was a little curious what was in his own box ever since the last time he’d been in this room, but not everyone would share his blasé outlook on it. If anyone. Though who knew if Leon was even interested in his own stuff.

She watched them blankly, the fire poker swaying slightly by her side. The maid no move to go forward, only watched as they conversed.

"The Masters wish of you to return to your rooms, sirs."

Leon couldn't quite make out the colour of the woman's hair in the poor lighting, but once Ren mentioned the bulletin board that glowing poker was enough for Leon to make the connection. Definitely not worth fighting, then, over things that would be here tomorrow night. "Agreed."

To the woman, Leon bowed slightly from the waist, replacing his sword in its makeshift belt. "We will withdraw, then, m'am."

They were listening, it seemed. It was the most intelligent thing she'd seen the patients do.

She kept her eyes on them a moment longer, then turned on her heels, crouched back down to the floor, and continued her process of scrubbing the tiles diligently. They needed to be clean. Everything needed to be clean.

That the foe turned her back on them and returned to... cleaning... was a little bit insulting, but Leon swallowed his pride and retreated, knowing it wasn't worth it. It really, really wasn't. Even though he hadn't gotten to try out his new sword yet. Even though the woman was insulting them with her lack of caution.

Snarling wordlessly in frustration, Leon hurried out of the room before his temper could get the better of him.
