Day 39: Intercom, Evening

The Head Doctor seemed a little rushed as he spoke on the intercom, not taking as much pleasure as he usually did in describing the delicious food that would soon be served.

"Hello, everyone! Tonight is turkey night, which means turkey breast in a great turkey gravy with some nice turkey sides: peas, herb potatoes, a small garden salad, and for dessert, a slice of pumpkin pie. We of course have vegetarian substitutes available, as well as our usual assortment of drinks.

"...I believe that's it! I'll talk to you soon!"

The intercom clicked off abruptly.

If the detective had wanted silence, then he shouldn't have followed up on Sokka's words. That was just the perfect invitation for a conversation amidst the meal. "Why not?" Sokka munched out pretty well for a mouthful of meat.

Shinichi was certain that he was going to have a red mark on his forehead from all this faceplaming. Why had he opened his mouth? Why? Sure, he didn't want to see Sokka actually get hurt, but if that meant he was stuck with the crazy guy with a ponytail for another night...

"Because there's other shit you should be worrying about, like...oh...not getting eaten by creatures with pointy teeth." Which Shinichi had never actually seen. Oh well. "But, like I said, if you're really hellbent on the idea, have fun. I'm not coming with."

The detective could facepalm all he wanted, but when it came to that action, Sokka was already king. It would take a lot for Shinichi to reach his level.

"Oh... right," Sokka shrugged. He still hadn't seen any of these alleged monsters yet, so he really couldn't believe that they existed yet. Sure, people had told him about them, but come on. After all the nice food stuff he'd seen during the day, why should the night be any different? Darker, probably, but that's how day and night worked. "What kind of monsters are we talking here? Like... giant saber-tooth moose-lions? Or some kind of angry spirit that's possessed something normal? Like a panda?" he asked. Maybe if it was something he'd actually seen or dealt with before he could be a little less skeptical about the whole "monster" thing.

Shinichi couldn't help raising an eyebrow. In spite of himself, he was curious. "Saber-tooth moose-lion?" Well, something with that particular mix of characteristics was bound to be pretty terrifying. Or really fucking confused.

"Yeah. They're reeeeeally cute when they're little, but the big ones... now there's where things start getting viscious! Even if you've never done anythign wrong, they'll just attack" Sokka's hands flew up, fork and all (and some bits of food too), to emphasize, "without warning!"

Ok, sure, so maybe he'd been trying to hunt Foofoocuddlypoops, but he'd made up with it, and had even promised not to eat meat! That should have counted for something, right?!

"Uh...you're talking about an animal with a name that suggests a combination of at least three different genera, none of whom can interbreed," Shinichi said, burying his face in his arms. God. Why did he even try? "A 'saber-tooth moose-lion' is a biological impossibility, no matter how cute it is when it's little."

Sokka made a face, and it wasn't one that said he understood exactly what his roommate had been saying. He did, however, get the "impossibility" stuff there at the end. "Hey, unless you've had one camping out on your head while its mom's trying to flatten you into the ground, don't go telling me what's impossible and what's not," he snapped. That had been a traumatic experience!

After a little more thought, Sokka was able to decipher some more of what Shinichi had said earlier. "And they can too be combined! Sure there's just bears and lions and other stuff around, but they're pretty plain. So are other things, but they're not plain plain. Like... there's all kinds of bears! Armadillo bears, platypus bears, gopher bears..." He listed off on his fingers.
