Nightshift 38: East Wing, Hall A

[From here.]

Soubi was certain he knew the way now. He'd come along here with Ritsuka, alone....teasing the boy with that can. Oh yes. He'd enjoyed that, though they'd had discussions about things Soubi would rather have hidden from. But you can't win them all.

Finding the door, he gave the handle a twist and a push but, like last time, it was a job for his shoulder. He stepped back before forcing his weight into it. The door opened and he shone the light in from the torch, checking for monsters.

[Going here.]

Sanzo barely managed to get out a muffled 'shit!' before the thing charged at him. For something so large, it moved surprisingly fast, enough that it took the monk by surprise.

He barely had time to duck out of the way, but it still wasn't quick enough. The thing was far too massive, and with that weight behind him, the momentum was enough to carry the thing forward faster than he could dodge. The large fist clipped his left shoulder, and everything on down from that instantly went numb. The flashlight was knocked out of a suddenly nerveless hand, skittering a few feet away on the floor.

Sanzo hit the wall on his side and swiveled, to awkwardly fire another shot at it as it went past.

The second shot was fired just as the mindless beast recovered from its attack, the bullet piercing right into the side of its chest. Copious amounts of blood continued to pour out of the wounds, clinging to its wired hair or splattering against the floor, and only then did the affects begin to show in its sluggish recovery. Yet the creature didn't fall, instead using its weight to push itself forward at its attacker.

All it wanted was to kill, to beat down the patient that dared to retaliate. The lurcher's mighty fists lifted, and when it drew close enough it immediately brought them both down in another mighty swing.

It didn't look good, though that could be Kon's desire to curl up and die peacefully talking. Sanzo had been hit, not bad enough to stop him but unless he had some invulnerability going for him it had to have hurt.

Kon flinched at the second gunshot, but as far as he could tell, it affected him more than the monster. The monster which was swinging at Sanzo again. He couldn't just stand here and watch it beat on his friend, no matter how much moving hurt.

"Hey ugly, over here!" Yelling as loud as he could to try and distract the thing, Kon threw himself forward. Grabbing for a handful of the thick hair to pull on, he swung wildly at it with his flashlight. Ugh it reeked! Hurling on the monster was looking more and more likely though it probably wouldn't do much.

That recovery was a little slower this time, but it wasn't good enough. The thing was still on its feet.

Sanzo had time to get a whiff of rancid blood as the other bullet hit home, and then Kon yelling at it for some reason, and that was about it. The thing had turned on him, sickeningly fast. Two meaty fists came hurtling at him. The monk barely had time to raise his gun arm when they connected with him. There was a sharp flash of fire lancing from his ribs on out, and he was suddenly knocked backwards.

He hit door behind him hard, hinges caving under him as he came crashing into the next room. Blackness engulfed him before he even hit the ground.

It felt no remorse for what it did, no shred of guilt that could otherwise stop a human if strong enough. Yet this thing was nothing of the sort, and so it would've easily chased its fallen prey hadn't it been for the sudden distraction.

There was a rough tug as something pulled at its hair before it was followed by a hard slap against the back of its shoulders. The creature, forgetting about its first victim, began to wildly swing its fists around, trying to reach back and grab the nuisance that was attacking it. Meanwhile, blood continued to pour, pooling down at its feet and slowly draining the life out of it.

Kon yelled wordlessly as he saw Sanzo get flung backwards, crashing through the door. He'd be OK. He had to be. The guy was way too tough to go down that easy, right?

He didn't have much time to worry about that as the monster decided it was ready for a piece of him now. Jumping on the thing might not have been the best plan of action now that he thought about it. The copious amounts of blood coming from the bullet wounds was even more obvious up close but Kon had no idea how long that would take to put the thing down. If he tried to just keep out of its way until it passed out, it could go after Sanzo again.

It hadn't grabbed him yet so Kon tightened his grip on the handful of hair and swung at it with the flashlight again.

Well, at least he wasn't thinking about the pain in his head anymore?

Brainiac 5 only had seconds to take in the scene that greeted them out in the hallway. A huge, brutish creature was fighting another patient who had somehow managed to latch onto the creature's back. But it was clear that he wouldn't stay there long. Sooner or later he would lose his grip and fall free or be pulled free by the creature. And there didn't appear to be anyone else in the area to help out.

"Clark," Brainiac 5 said sharply. "We have to do something. I'll attempt to distract it, you see if you can find a way to disable it." Without waiting for a reply, the Coluan boy dashed along the hallway until he judged himself to be a safe distance from the thing. Then he aimed the beam of his flashlight at its face, carefully flicking it to hit the creature's eyes then dart away again. Hopefully it would be enough of a distraction, otherwise he would have to resort to other means.

Clark started to tell Brainy to wait, but he was already running off, leaving Clark to run after him. Clark wasn't sure how exactly Brainy thought he'd disable it. Speed? Hadn't been reliable, he could be stuck running at it like a human or hit it going supersonic. His strength? Probably safer than his heat vision, which might endanger everyone in the narrow hall. But Brainy was in the way and Clark didn't trust himself to use it when he had two people in range.

The farmboy skidded to a stop. He couldn't see whoever was trying to hang on the monster, which looked weirdly enough like a bloodthirst Bigfoot with loads of fur, but he couldn't use his heat vision with him anywhere near by.

"All of you, get down!" he shouted, "Get away from it! Get behind me!"

That was probably the safest direction - he might not be able to control his heat vision besides just pointing his eyes in one direction and hoping he hit, but it'd be easier to do it if he wasn't worrying about having to be accurate.

Between the rough tugging and hard swinging the monster grew more and more agitated as the seconds dragged on, and while the attacks themselves didn't do much damage, it was enough to make it forget about its other victim altogether. The lurcher continued to make a grab for the other patient, this time lashing about violently to try and throw the nuisance off it.

However, the moment another light shined on its face it stopped, temporarily blinded by the sudden light before it started to stagger towards where it saw it last.

The monster's thrashing was too much for Kon's shaky hold on it's hair. Losing his grip, he was flung off and crashed painfully into the wall and lay there groaning as the new pain and the old pain tried to gang up on him.

Blinking away the spots dancing in front of his eyes, Kon muzzily looked around the hall. He thought he'd heard someone shouting, though he hadn't been able to make out any words. Finally he spotted a guy waving about a flashlight. He was either trying to get the creature away from Kon or trying to piss it off more. Hard to tell.

He thought maybe there was someone else here too, but two random guys seriously had no chance against this monster, injured or not. Wheezing, Kon tried to scramble up again and help them but his arms were shaking and his head was throbbing even worse than before and moving just made his stomach twist painfully. Hunching over he held his stomach and gasped pathetically, hoping no one minded him taking a quick time-out down here.

The world was swimming back into focus. He hadn't been out long, but from the sounds of it, some serious shit was going down. The monk pushed himself up, biting back the groan that started to come up. His back and the stab wound were killing him, but he needed to do something.

The gun. Where the hell was the gun? Sanzo's head was still ringing, but he groped around in the wreck of the door around him, until his hand finally came on it. He lifted the gun, pointing it at the lurker raging outside.

His gun arm was shaking still from the blow. Sanzo fired anyway, emptying the rest of the rounds at the lurcher.

It occurred to Brainiac 5 that perhaps he should have considered waiting until Clark had a chance to give his own opinion on the plan, sketchy that it was, before initiating it. But the boy clinging to the creature's back was in danger, and they hadn't any time to lose, so he'd made the choice and trusted that Clark would be able to stop the creature with his powers.

His intent had been to distract the monstrosity and allow Clark an opening, but it appeared that his plan had worked a little too well, as now it was moving towards him at a frightening pace. He hurriedly began moving backwards, but the creature was faster than he'd given it credit for. Then, to make matters worse, his foot caught on something in his haste and Brainiac 5 slipped and landed heavily, meaning he was now staring up at the huge thing bearing down on him.

And then the loud noise, like some kind of explosion, came again, but was much closer this time. Brainiac 5 yelped and covered his ears against the noise, though part of him absently noticed that it had some effect on the thing towering over him. A form of weapon, perhaps, he noted distantly. He hoped what ever it was would have as much of an effect on the creature as the noise did on him. It was loud enough that he could make out Clark was yelling something, but his ears were ringing too much to be able to understand what it was exactly.

[identity profile] son-ofkrypton.livejournal.com 2009-02-14 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Clark bit his lip, not sure if anyone heard him. He inched closer, jumping when suddenly there were a quick succession of flashes from off to the side, the sounds of gunfire echoing in the room. It wasn't the first time he'd heard gunfire, but it was the first time in a long time that he'd been caught by surprise by it - usually he was able to actually see the shots, watch the bullets in slow-mo as they went through the air.

It also didn't help he didn't think anyone was listening. Clark didn't think they were going to get behind him, which meant he'd have to get so close so he wouldn't be in danger of burning up Brainy or the other patients. Which, with his (lack of) control, pretty much meant point blank range. Clark felt his heart jack-hammering in his chest as he moved closer, summoning his heat vision and instantly feeling that pressure building, but it was fast, too fast. He couldn't keep his eyes closed any longer. He aimed his face toward the furry monster and opened his eyes.

The heat vision blasted out, but he had no idea if it hit; all he could feel was the fire burning at his eyes, tears starting to stream down his cheeks.

When it saw that something had fallen the lurcher's movements quickened, almost as if it knew it was dying. Yet it didn't; all it knew was how to kill, how to rip and tear and beat down. This was why nothing else mattered; nothing but this urge.

Yet when it lurched forward a shower of bullets suddenly pierced through its skin, causing blood to spill out in deadly amounts. It was only then that it staggered, stepping away from the patient as it fought a losing battle to stay up.

However, everything was lost the moment a sharp, hot pain ran across its neck, burning every bit of skin surrounding it. It tore at its throat, cutting it wide open, and just like that it fell to the floor, unmoving.

[identity profile] gottabetactile.livejournal.com 2009-02-15 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Kon really couldn't say which was worse, the sound of the gunshots or the smell of burning hair and way too much blood. The thud of something heavy hitting the ground was enough to penetrate the little ball of self-pity he'd folded himself into and he looked up, picking out the shape of the creature sprawled on the ground.

Forcing himself to uncurl was one of the hardest things he'd ever done, but Kon managed it and climbed shakily to his feet. He wasn't sure what the hell had happened to finally stop the thing but he didn't have time to worry about that now.

Stumbling as he picked up his flashlight from where it had fallen, he hurried towards the door to the patients' possessions room. He had to make sure Sanzo was OK.

Brainiac 5 threw himself to the side as the creature stumbled then slowly fell forward, the smell of burning hair and flesh both making him retch and revealing what Clark had been trying to tell him. His heat vision. Pushing himself to his feet shakily, he glanced around, noticing with a flare of annoyance that the boy they had been helping simply rushed off and left them both. But that was pushed aside when he saw Clark. Something was clearly wrong, as the Kryptonian was... crying? Abandoning all thought of the others they'd been helping and skirting around the corpse of the creature, Brainiac 5 rushed to his friend's side.

"Clark! Is something wrong? Are you... in any pain?"

[identity profile] son-ofkrypton.livejournal.com 2009-02-15 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
The smell from the creature was horrible; it was this weird mix of burning skin and fur, so strong and offensive that Clark almost go sick as it suddenly washed over him. He was still rubbing at his tearing eyes, trying to keep his dinner down, when he heard Brainy's voice coming at him from the side.

"It's okay," Clark said, "I'm okay. It's just my heat vision right now isn't very accurate and it hurts to use it. That's why I wanted you guys to get down so I wouldn't risk hurting you."

[identity profile] emotionl4arobot.livejournal.com 2009-02-15 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
Brainiac 5 rested a hand tentatively on Clark's arm, uncertain what, if anything, he could do to help out at the moment. "I'm sorry, I should have asked what you were planning on doing before I made my decision," he said apologetically. "But you did it, Clark. You managed to save both myself and the other patient, though I'm afraid he left immediately."

He glanced about the area and added, "I'm also uncertain what those noises were. It might be best to move away from here quickly."
