Nightshift 38: M-B Block Hallway

[From here]

Aside from his own footsteps, it was completely silent when Tyki slipped into the next hallway. Not that he'd particularly minded or anything. At least he wouldn't be held up by some bothersome monsters this way.

The Noah only paused to lit a cigarette before heading towards the next door. Thankfully their meeting spot wasn't on the other side of the building, because that would have been a waste on playing time.

This looked like the spot! Teisel had to admit, he was really very good at this. Whether that was enough to make him useful was another matter, but there was no point in getting depressed before he'd even started working.

Hopefully the admiral hadn't changed his mind...

Depth Charge stumbled blindly through the darkness, down into the block's hallway. He'd left his map in his room, but it wasn't as though that made a bit of smelting difference. He didn't have plans tonight. Tonight he had nothing.

He gripped the bat even more tightly in his fist and charged on towards the door into the next hall, throwing it open so violently that it hurtled into the wall behind it with a reverberating crash.

Almost there, and Hanatarou couldn't be more relieved. So far he was okay, and everyone said the halls by the rooms were safer. Right?

He still didn't slow down, though, as he moved down the block (almost exactly the same as his own, more familiar section) and found the hallway he was looking for.

The next hall Godot came to was empty, though he could hear sounds of movement coming from some distance away. The sheer size of the place made it clear that the prosecutor was hardly alone in his situation. So again, why? Was it designed to be a competition? The first rat to press the red button got a prize, while all the others were shocked?

Godot shone his light around, fighting back the sluggish feeling that came from missing his morning cups of coffee. Several halls that looked like the one he had just come from, areas marked restrooms, and a door leading from unknown into unknown. Twists, turns, and how many dead ends before finding that right switch? There was only one way to know, though Godot lacked breadcrumbs to mark his trail.

The nurse had taken him down this way twice before, but this was Bruce's first time venturing into this hall on his own. Flashlight steady in his hand, Bruce wondered by what system roommates were assigned; it was probably just a strange twist of luck that made it so that his room and the Flash's were in the halls farthest from each other, but Bruce was wary of making allowances in this place. There were only so many "coincidences" possible in this world, and he could feel Dr. Landel rapidly using up his number.

He hadn't seen any monsters yet, but he knew from what he'd read on the bulletin that it was far from impossible to be attacked by one (or a swarm of them) alone. With his luck...

Chances, he mentally amended. Not luck.

There were more people in the hallway now as compared to just a few moments earlier, but most of them were just passing by and focused on their own matters. So long as Bruce didn't spot any familiar faces, he could walk with confidence; his attitude and demeanor was Batman in all the important ways now.

When he'd first arrived at the Institute, what bothered Bruce the most was the thought of having to spend days or weeks forced to act within the confines of some persona to protect his identity. Were the Batman's true name his own, Bruce would be seriously considering right now relaxing his caution; yet, provided by some cruel joke the patients in this Institute were returned to their own worlds--memories intact--after this ordeal...Bruce would be putting people at risk whom he couldn't afford to compromise. And sacrificing other lives just to make easier his own, even lives of the people who had at one time trusted him not to destroy them...that Bruce would not do. Not unless--

It didn't feel strange, walking with the Flash behind him rather than in front of or beside him. The Batman himself rarely allowed other people to stand so easily were they could at any time lash out and catch him by surprise, but he hadn't thought twice about taking the lead this time. He'd evaluate his reasons for this later, but for now, they needed some real progress.

"I AM OSIRIS, MASTER OF THESE HALLWAYS! GIVER OF LIFE! BRINGER OF DEATH! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

Spider came tearing into the hallway at top speed, coat flapping about him. He tried to change direction, failed to slow down, and slammed into the wall next to the bathroom door, hard. He cackled.

"MY CREATION REBELS! HOW DARE YOU!"

He punched the offending wall hard. His fist rebounded harmlessly. Harmless to the wall, not to him. Spider howled in pain.

"THINGS GROW WORSE BY THE MINUTE! I MUST SURVEY MY KINGDOM! AWAYYYYYY!"

With that, he pushed away from the wall and sprinted out the door into the adjoining hallway.

Even though Guy didn't really want to think about it, his mind went ahead and started doing a head count of his friends. Luke? Gone. Tear? Gone. Peony? Gone. Asch, who wasn't really a friend, but somehow deserved a spot on the list anyway - gone. Ion was apparently still here, but who knew if that was even the case at this point, and Jade's whereabouts had been up in the air for a few days now.

So the worst case scenario meant that it was only himself, Anise, and Sync left. Great. Guy would have rubbed at his eyes if his hands weren't full.

On top of all of that, Ashton had disappeared too. Guy wasn't sure what he would do if Anise and Claude were victim to the same fate someday, but it just meant that they needed to work even harder to get out of here before that happened - and hopefully the basement would offer them some kind of clue about that.

Reaching Claude's hall, Guy started down it.

The hallway seemed empty as Tony stepped into it, though enough sound carried to let him know other patients were still out and about for the night. He made a quick left, purposeful strides carrying him to the door without any hesitation. It was thoughtless confidence in a way, assuming there was nothing there to be seen because there hadn't been on previous nights.

Others had already come and gone, so it looked as though Kurogane hadn't gotten out as swiftly as he'd hoped he would. Or others had just chosen to move quickly as well. Kurogane made sure things were safe enough before rounding the corner and heading for the next hallway.

After creeping his way out past the end of the hallway, Kankurou narrowed his eyes a bit, pushing his hair back out of his face, eyes sweeping the area to get himself oriented. He wasn't even sure what the hell he was doing other than looking for Gaara, Temari, Baki, even some of the Konoha brats. Anyone he knew who could tell him what was going on.

His eyes settled on a ridiculously tall guy standing there, and loped over, eyes still flicking this way and that, prepared to fall into combat at a moment's notice.

"Hey." he called, voice low to avoid getting the attention of anything that might be lurking, "You got any idea what might be a good direction to go?"

He'd walked down this way too many times for his liking. It'd be easier if he had his natural body to handle the darkness. To be able to read the air, see more in the dark... that'd make his progress less halting.

But on the other hand, he had his new companion with him, who had a light of his own, and that did make things easier. More light for his one open eye. If the double-vision would stop, that'd make things a lot easier. Human bodies were so inconveniently designed at times.

ZEX kept moving, making sure to keep close to Teisel so as not to lose him in the dark.

Okita didn't waste any more time than he already had in reaching this hall. Ayumu was quick and he needed to hurry. Keeping one hand on the hilt of his sword, he moved as silently as he could down the hall and into the main block hallway. The large hallways were easier to seem like she was waiting for anyone, but that also meant she was easier to spot.

Turning the corner, Okita hurried to reach the doorway.

The first thing Albedo noticed were the people. He didn't see them yet, but saw flickers of light and the sounds of talking and movement. Where was he? Was this U-Tic's headquarters? Mori couldn't remember seeing Anise in this hall and really had no idea why she would be, so he kept moving along at a steady pace. He was careful as always not to jostle Mitsukuni as he sat on his shoulders. Until he was finished with the ice cream, the smaller Host would be somewhat precarious on his perch. He felt so much better with his hair down and what little power he had coming back to him. He wasn't anywhere near what he should have been and that still bothered him to no end, but he was at least able to see further in the dark than most people could without their flashlights. Small blessings for a death god's eyes.

Now the only thing that remained was finding something to do in this place without getting eaten or otherwise seen by people he already knew. By the time he got out here, there weren't that many people left around, so Grell didn't waste any time in moving along.

As he led the way down the hallway with a faint frown on his face, it dawned on Claude that this was his first time working with Dias since Ashton's abduction. And before that, he hadn't worked with him since their battle on the Front Lines in Lacour. Rushing to a friend's aid or fighting back-to-back during a monster invasion was one thing, but simply going out with a less urgent goal in mind was something else entirely.

As much as he respected the other swordsman, it was hard not to feel defensive or competitive around him sometimes -- not to mention he still felt a little sore over some of the things that had happened between them since his arrival. But Claude knew that was his problem, and he'd just have to deal with it.

In the back of his mind, he realized he'd overreacted, at least a little. But he couldn't feel bothered to figure out why -- or, rather, he didn't want to make himself feel bothered. Not right then, anyway.

He didn't say anything as he kept walking, though he did quickly glance back to make sure the others were with him.

While Guy wanted to be glad that Dias already had what he'd asked about and they hadn't been forced to delay any longer, he did feel uneasy as he followed after Claude. He didn't often see his friend in anything but a good mood. Maybe he had his melancholy moments sometimes (they all did), but this was different. The younger man's frustration just made their difference in age more obvious.

Walking in silence wasn't going to help matters, though. It didn't look like Claude was up for starting a conversation, and Dias wasn't the chatty type, which meant it was up to Guy to try and break the tension a little. He didn't want to be relegated to mediator, but he didn't think he had much choice.

"Have you made it into the basement before?" he asked, glancing toward Dias. He was pretty sure he knew about all of Claude's attempts to get down there, so there wasn't much point in directing the question to the other blond as well.

The corridor was almost unnervingly quiet, with only three other patients in the area. Though, Brainiac 5 supposed that may have been due to how long he and Clark had been speaking in his room, it seemed that there were several groups who had important plans for the night hours. Perhaps it would be worth looking into what those plans were, he decided. While it was highly likely that most were pointless, some allies would be useful if he was to obtain enough information to escape from this place.

"If you don't mind me asking, how long have you been here, Clark?" It couldn't have been much longer than Brainiac 5 himself, unless his powers were weakened even more significantly than they had been last night.

[identity profile] son-ofkrypton.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
Put like that, of course it seemed easy. Just get another flashlight for Kvothe. But if there was anything he'd learned, it was that simple in theory wasn't really all that simple at all.

Clark followed as Brainy set the pace, his longer legs easily catching up to the shorter alien. He kept his voice down as they talked, mentally trying to do the math for how long he'd been here. It hadn't seemed that long since he'd heard Jor-El's voice and then followed the glow of the storm cellar. Without realizing it, Clark's hand rose up to rub at his chest, as if he was having trouble breathing but hadn't noticed it yet.

"Maybe fourteen days?" he hazarded a guess. They hadn't been easy days. They would've been, with his powers under control. And he'd met people only to lose them to Landels. Clark felt a wave of sadness as he thought back to Claire; she'd vanished once before but he'd still counted her his friend. She'd also entrusted him with the truth about her, telling him about how she couldn't be killed. Clark had been on the verge of telling her some of his secrets when she vanished again.

The hallway out of the patients' quarters was already a little quieter than what normally indicated the start of night -- Sasuke mentally cursed his nurse for coming to fetch him a little late for dinner, forcing him to start the night late as well. Although how he could possibly complain about that to her, given how much the day staff knew (or let on they knew) about the night shift, was something beyond Sasuke's willingness to concoct.

We'll deal with problems as they arise.

A nice sentiment in theory, but Aidou didn't need to explain that they had different sets of problems. For one, the smell of burnt flesh had nearly disappeared. And no matter what, the noble couldn't help but chafe at the idea of the unknown. He was never content this way.

But for tonight, at least, there was a goal in mind. Everything else became a distraction.

In the back of his mind, he marked each movement and sound around him, absently filtering out what was unimportant. He smelled blood, fresh blood, but it wasn't nearby. "Do you keep Allen Walker informed on what you know about the basement?" he asked eventually, as they passed out of the cell block.

As he continued down the hall, Matsuda found himself considering several bad situations that might result from this little adventure, the least of his worries involving a monster. But it was just a little bit further. A little bit further, and he'd be able to see if his fears had any foundation.

There, at least this hallway was familiar, and it didn't bring back memories of that unpleasant night like the previous one. ZEX took a breath.

"Actually, that reminds me... if you're ever injured here, there's a place you can go for help." ZEX tried to sound nonchalant to a degree. "I believe it's room M35. There are people there who specialize in medicine and healing, so it's a good place to keep in mind as you travel here. Human bodies are still very new to me, so perhaps this isn't unusual for you, but I find that injuries here don't last very long... they seem to heal relatively quickly. Or at least, faster than they would if I were still a VUX. It's a shame your human skin is so thin though... it does make one vulnerable. It's amazing that you humans survived so long when you feel pain so strongly."

Not that ZEX had ever had any experience with anything so embarrassing.

[identity profile] no-barbarian.livejournal.com 2009-02-14 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
The concern was...sorta nice, and Teisel's smile got more relaxed. It was weird, having someone worry about him who had no reason to. He was running into that a lot here.

Teisel nodded, glad someone shared his view on clobbering innocent woodland creatures. "Exactly. They're just animals, it's not like they attack us just because they're evil or something. They're probably just scared or starved." Naturally, if it were between getting hurt and killing one of the monsters here, Teisel would kill the monster. But he didn't have to like it.

Another shudder. "That's big. There aren't any bugs back home that get anywhere near that size." Except for bug-like reaverbots, but then they were something else altogether. It wasn't like he was scared of them, or anything. That was ridiculous. But...that was pretty damn big.

Now, that was definitely useful to know. "I hadn't heard about that. Sort of like a field clinic?" M35. He'd have to write that down when he got the chance. Hopefully he'd never need that much help, but it was an unexpected relief to know it was there. Zex's last comment was a little weird. Maybe his normal skin was so thick he didn't feel much at all. "I guess it could be hard to handle if you're not used to it. We'd get hurt a lot worse if we couldn't feel strong pain, though. I guess it's a trade-off."
