Day 38: Lunch

Soubi was beginning to feel the effects of a busy morning on a tired body. To make things worse, they were serving Tacos and Burritos. He could really do some with something a bit softer today. Blander. But it was hardly his biggest concern right now.

Having picked out his lunch, he looked for Ritsuka. He had to apologise, but these things usually ended up in bigger arguments, so, as could be expected, Soubi was a little nervous. Maybe they wouldn't find each other this shift. Maybe he had a little more time?

Soubi sat alone, being sure that his face was set in the expression that sent the girls at College the other way.

Not minding that Renamon wanted to get straight down to business, Peter continued to eat as he listened to what she had to say. The theory was an interesting one, and if it did turn out to be true, then he wanted to know all of the details himself. If he contributed some information, chances were that they would keep him in the loop, so he didn't see why he shouldn't explain what he could.

"Yeah, Nathan had a power. He... could fly." It was still so strange to say - the brother he had known for his whole life suddenly able to do something like that. (It was somehow stranger than his own abilities.) While Peter doubted that Nathan would want him spreading his secret around, he decided that it really didn't matter in a place like this.

"And what did you want to know about my world?" It wasn't exactly easy to describe it in a few words, after all.

"And that was the only ability he had?" It was rather... pale compared to what some of the others here had claimed they could do, but perhaps that was normal in their world.

And the fact that it was their world, and not simply Peter's friend's told Renamon to tread a little more cautiously. "Anything you can tell me that is different from others' worlds. Are there multiple dimensions, does technology not exist? What's the year as you know it? Do people normally have abilities, or is it a rare and hidden thing?" She bowed her head slightly. "Anything that you can think of, whether it seems common or not."

"Yeah, that was it," Peter said. Though flying was considered a whole lot where he came from. Apparently that wasn't the case for Renamon, though. It was difficult for him to imagine a place where a flying human was nothing to look twice at.

Some of the hypothetical questions she posed were pretty strange, but he focused on the ones that it would make sense for him to answer. "It was the end of 2006 in my world," he answered first, wondering now what other times people came from. There was Soujirou, who was from ancient Japan, and he really couldn't imagine it getting more extreme than that. "And humans having abilities like flight isn't supposed to be possible where I come from, but in the past few months people just seemed to start cropping up. But it turns out that there are some people who have had powers for years, but just managed to hide it." Claude had been proof of that, along with the very existence of the Company.

He wasn't sure what else to say about Earth - or rather, he didn't know what to say that would actually be relevant to their current situation - so hopefully the girl would have some more questions for him.

She nodded, following, and commiting the details to memory to share with Mello later. "Thank you. I only have three other questions then.

"Has there been any crisises in your home world in the recent past before you came here? Anything life-altering or world-shaking for either you, the population at large, or your friend?"

She paused then, considering the wording of the next question. "And while he was here, did he... experience the special counseling or any other experiments?"

[identity profile] human-sponge.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
Of all the questions to ask, why that one? If he looked at it from a distance, Peter knew that it made sense, but if there was something he didn't want to have to try and answer, then that was it.

But he just needed to give the facts without all of the details. Maybe it would have been important for her to know his involvement in it, but Peter didn't think he could admit to that, not even here. "Yeah, actually, something was happening. A huge bomb almost went off in one of the largest cities - in one of the countries, anyway, but it's arguably the most important country. It was stopped, though. Nathan helped stop it, actually."

The second question was much easier, and it also kept him from dwelling on what he'd just said. "I don't think he did, no. Not special counseling, and I guess he might have been experimented on just before he was discharged, but not as far as I know..." Some brainwashing must have been done, obviously, but Peter figured Renamon was already assuming that.

Now that went with the generalizations she had been making. People involved in important events in their home world. She didn't need to know details--they wouldn't help her in the long run. She just need to understand the facts about the person.

Renamon nodded again. "Thank you. This question may be a bit intrusive. Was there anything going on here before he disappeared? Any emotional trauma or perhaps a loss that he experienced? Even a physical trauma."

This was the newest part of the theory, but it was one that both she and Mello saw as fitting. So far it had held, but she would see soon if that pattern would continue.

That was an odd question, but Peter didn't take as much issue with it as the one from before. He knew that she must have been asking for a reason, so he did his best to think back. It already felt like it had been ages since his brother was taken.

"I... don't really think so. I saw a lot of him, so I think I would have known if something happened. He got injured once, but it wasn't that bad." He paused for a moment, frowning as something else occurred to him.

"He did get knocked out by a cat once. And after that, sometimes he would just be passed out in his room during nightshifts, and I couldn't wake him up." He didn't think the two things were connected, but he figured he should list off anything that might count as physical trauma.

Unable to be woken. She mentally made a note of that to check and see if it held with any of the other cases.

"That should be all then. I may contact you about this at a later date. If we have any findings, I'll post it or let you know." Renamon tipped her head slightly. "Did you have any questions for me?"

"All right, yeah, I'd appreciate it if you kept me updated," Peter agreed. That seemed only fair after he'd been willing to help her out. In the end, it hadn't been too unpleasant, though it did make him a little nervous about whatever Nathan might have been put through before leaving this place.

He might have had a few questions, but not of them were particularly important - and it looked like the shift was ending, anyway. "I don't think so," he responded as he got up from his seat. "But I'm glad I could help." With that taken care of, Peter went to meet a nurse so he could be led to the Game Room.
