Nightshift 36: Main Hallway, 1-West

[From here.]

For once, this hall was devoid of traffic, though people were beginning to appear in the adjacent areas. Ken simply looked on and ran, seeing little point in staying in one place.

Huh, the hall was empty. Yukari had never gotten this far and the place was still devoid of people, but then again, it wasn't as though she had this advantage of a quick start often...

Uhg, this was getting tiring, moving all this way with so much stuff. She was halfway there, though, so she couldn't stop just yet, especially when the halls weren't completely safe to be.

Definitely the long way around. Safer, hopefully. Matt tried not to look ahead towards the center of the hall. He could tell from the smell that the mess had been cleaned. If he was to look he was sure he wouldn't see a single speck of blood left on the walls or floor. All the same, the events of the previous night were still fresh in his memory. Just the thought was enough to make him swallow to keep his food down.

One more long hallway until he reached the right block. He just had to keep his focus ahead.

Subaru hoped that he hadn't managed to miss Yue/Tsukishiro-san already. There was hardly anyone in the hall, though, so it seemed relatively unlikely. He leaned against a wall for now, at a location where he could see both the halls leading out onto the main hall.

Just what are you planning to do?

Yue had thought Yukito asleep, or at least occupied with his own thoughts, and was startled at the sudden question, enough that his steady pace faltered for just an instant. All he felt in response was a vague annoyance at yet another interruption, and without bothering to respond in anything resembling words he started to continue on toward the center hall.

Yukito, however, refused to accept that, and began to struggle for control, finding an unexpected stubborn streak within himself to bring their progress to a halt in the middle of the hallway. If you won't at least tell me, we're not going.

The guardian's jaw tightened as he felt the faintest stirrings of anger beneath the apathy. Everyone was so determined to stop him from going where he wanted to, tonight, and he was tired of it.

So caught up was he in the inner struggle that he failed to recognize the familiar aura nearby, or really notice anyone around him at all.

"Let's see," she mumbled to herself, mostly to keep her thoughts straight. "They should be around here somewhere...."

Turning a right, Harley moved down the corridor at a careful pace. She honestly wanted to hurry, but she already knew too much rushed activity too soon would just get her dizzy, and she be on the ground before she even realized it. Best to save her strength for when she got her babies out. Then... ooohhh then would there be some hell to pay. Moreso if they had so much as a scratch on their darling little faces.

It wasn't very long until her flashlight illuminated the stairs she'd been expecting to find. She had yet to make it upstairs and was a bit unsure of what could be up there. But if that's where her babies were, that where she'd go.

"Just hold on a little longer," she prayed. "Mommy's on her way."

When Crane finally arrived in the main hallway, below the stairs, he paused as he noticed a woman stumbling around. His first thought was that it was a drunk person, but he doubted that it would be possible to get alcohol in a place like this, so it had to be something else. Numb muscles from sedatives, perhaps. Then in that case, the person was asking to be made into a meal, and deserved the fate that waited them. Upon second glance, he realized that she looked familiar.

It was Ms. Quinn. Had she been sedated? If so, then why? And she'd claimed to be from Arkham, but why was she doing something as stupid as trying to walk around at night? She should know what sedatives did to a person's motor functions. Although clearly, she wasn't terribly familiar if she was still trying to walk. It seemed as though she was headed upstairs to, and he could barely hear her mentioning something along the lines of 'Mommy's coming' as he came closer.

He had half a mind to leave her to whatever monster ran across her and tried to eat her, but he paused before he passed on by. She was from Gotham, after all, and as he'd told Kristoph the night before, it seemed like a different Gotham than he knew. He still had questions, and couldn't let her die before they were answered. Unless, of course, he took advantage of the fact that he was sedated. If he got the information he needed tonight, then it wouldn't matter.

Instead of passing right on by, he went over to her. "Ms. Quinn?" he asked, feigning concern. "What are you doing out here? You don't look well. Should you really be out tonight?"

To change the subject, Raine asked, "Would you mind if I watched you with Forte? Obviously, it's been a while since I was taught any self-defense." She wasn't going on kid herself on that; she didn't want a repeat of what that woman had done to her.

[identity profile] mizuhomaiden.livejournal.com 2008-10-29 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
Sheena turned around and started walking backwards so she could see Raine a bit better, confident that she wouldn't hit anything as long as no one stupidly ran out in front of her. She blinked a little and cocked her head.

"Yeah... Like I'm going to tell you no when I'm teaching someone who may as well be the biggest baby ever. Who knows how much he'd wail if he stubbed his toe during training." She rolled her eyes. "I'm also really worried about him. Aside from the whole robot thing."

The ninja scratched the back of her neck. "I think he got a visitor or something. Did you see his rambling post about doppelgangers on the board?"

He may not have intended to go that way, but Kurogane did give the left hallway a glance before heading the way he needed. No, no overpowering scent of blood this night. Something drastic must have happened for that one time. Most likely a death. He'd seen a few notices on the board (had argued with one brat a bit), so it wasn't impossible. He just hoped he'd never recognize any names of those killed.

Brainiac 5 shone his flashlight along the hallway in both directions, trying to make out if there was anything of interest that would warrant further investigation. Considering how many other people were in the area, he had to wonder why no one had thought to activate any form of light source beyond the primitive and largely ineffectual handheld lights. Unless he'd somehow managed to arrive in the midst of a power crisis, it made little sense to have everyone relying on their own flashlights to move around. But then it was also highly possible that none of these people were supposed to be wandering around after dark and were trying to avoid drawing attention to themselves, which would also explain the air of caution many of them had.

He blinked, abandoning the train of thought; it hardly concerned him either way and he had a more pressing problem to deal with. Unfortunately what he could see of this hallway was largely unhelpful. Deciding to try heading to his right first, Brainiac 5 only made it a short distance until he found himself facing some stairs heading upwards. He briefly debated the merits of taking them, finally concluding that it would be more logical to continue his exploration of the current floor before possibly becoming lost by switching to a different one. Again he found himself regretting the loss of his internal systems and scanning devices, as he was having to rely on his own memory to draw a map of the areas he was passing through instead of a more accurate representation pieced together from obtained data. Fortunately this would only be a short-term problem. He was confident that he would be returned to his normal form in no time.

The area to his right having been largely unhelpful, Brainiac 5 turned and went back the way he came, continuing past his point of origin and noting with an internal sigh that beyond that there seemed to be more hallway. He supposed he shouldn't have been surprised by this point.

This hallway was a lot larger than the one they had been in before, and there seemed to be a lot more foot traffic here. Akihiko looked in both directions, then asked, "Which way do you think we should head?"

He didn't press it, thankfully. If they got the chance to discuss it later, then she would likely have to tell him, but for now she would rather focus on getting out. There was no sense in dragging up those memories without purpose when there was still work to be done. Her father wouldn't have wanted her to mope, after all.

The hallway that they came out into seemed much larger than the previous ones, and there were more people traveling through it. It was almost starting to look like a maze, with all the halls going every which way, but it wasn't as bad as Tartarus. Not as far as she was aware, at least.

"Let's avoid the stairs for now, and head to the left," she suggested. "If there's nothing telling us where we are, or if we can't find our Evokers, then we can backtrack and head up them."

Made it. Nny slowed down and took a look at the map. He hadn't taken much time in copying it, so he had to stare at it for a while before it made sense. He had to go down three more fucking halls? What kind of building design was that? Shit, there should have been a door to his destination one hall back if the architects had any sense.

'Nny, this is useless. Why don't you just go back to sleep? Oh! You could try to find that GLaDOs girl! She seemed nice...' his own voice whispered in his ear.

The electricity she clutched in her hand cast flickering shadows on the walls and the other patients moving quickly through the hallway. Elle felt skittish for the first time since her arrival, her father's bland acquiescence to the nurses' story playing through her mind.

Elle wandered in a daze until she found herself in the main hallway again.

First Peter had run out on her, then her dad had dumped her here, and now Eddie had vanished. She didn't think she could take this anymore.

With an angry shriek, she flung a mass of sparks at the wall, lightning it up for twenty feet in every direction. Immediately after the light died, however, she moved on, hugging the wall. Daddy would be annoyed if and when he found out she was being unnecessarily showy.

Screw this. She was walking out the front door tonight, and never looking back. She'd go back to Daddy and...

That was where the plan fell apart. He'd probably put her right back in here. But she was gonna try anyway.

Sora might have thought that it was a bad idea for some of his fellow patients to be carrying out conversations in the hallway if he hadn't done the same thing countless times himself. The fact of the matter was that monsters didn't venture this close to the blocks very often, especially not this early on.

Strangely enough, he was pretty sure that a few of the faces that he passed were ones that he'd never seen before, not even in passing. Were they new? Waking up at the start of nightshift wasn't unheard of, but it still didn't seem fair.

Silently wishing them luck, the Keyblade Master moved into the next hall, glad that his room was so close to the female block.

Tsubaki was extra cautious entering the main hall, unable to forget what she’d found there the night before--or had at least smelled. She hadn’t cared for getting a look before, and she didn’t now. This time there was no cloying, coppery tang in the air, though.

Good.

Even if she didn’t know what kind of magic they used to clean the building so fast, that was good. The voices around her were a bit reassuring, in that way--no one was being attacked, no one getting hurt like she and Kurogane had last night. Of course, that only reminded her of her own injury, and she cast another blind gaze around the hallway, focussing her senses.

Like Kurogane had said, she couldn’t let her guard down.

Qui-Gon nodded. It was always dangerous to stay in one place at night and even if he was armed now with a knife, it didn't change things. He set a good pace, taking the twists and turns of the halls with his new companion until it branched out into a wider hall. As he walked, he kept an eye on Leon, observing how he carried himself and looking for any signs of injury or illness. If there was something wrong, there was only so much he could do with the Force - it couldn't work miracles and he was not a Healer, either.

Leon did his best to keep up with Qui-Gon, but he ended up a pace or two behind the other man. He didn't mind, honestly; it kept Qui-Gon from seeing how badly he was shivering, even with the coat. He was a bit relieved that, despite the fact that he'd been out for a while, the transformation hadn't progressed beyond this stage. Maybe it would go a lot slower now? Leon touched the vial in his pocket, reassuring himself it was still there. He felt like he should warn Qui-Gon, but he didn't know the other man all that well, and he didn't want to risk anything at this point.

The gargoyle looked back briefly to make sure Nate was keeping up with him. Then he turned his attention to the two stairwells. "Janitor's closet is on the other side. Would you rather go up those stairs instead?"

Going this way would mean more traveling on the upper floor, and from his experience so far the first level seemed much safer - at least in the main halls. (Excepting that incident from the night before, but he'd never seen what had caused the mess...)

[identity profile] atoyboxworld.livejournal.com 2008-11-01 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Even before Brooklyn asked, Near had been considering the same question. While there were stairs immediately ahead, no extra distance would be traveled by taking the stairs further to the east. More importantly, while they would pass by the Sun Room, if something should be going on that Brooklyn felt a need to interfere with, it would be much safer overall to go through the door than over the balcony. Also, the visibility of the area was decreased if they were passing by a door than if they were going overhead.

All told, the choice was an easy enough one to make. Especially since there were no body parts immediately visible.

"East for now. There are stairs on the other side of the building that are closer to our goal."

Here he was. No sign of yellow ribbons, but he might be early still. Xelloss was pleased he wasn't late, at least, despite his hesitation for Hellmaster. Maybe there was something to the talk on the boards of strange time effects?

Xelloss leaned against a wall comfortably with his shovel, watching the other patients pass by, and keeping an open eye for his evening's assigned partner. He should sign up for those things more often, the anticipation was fun. And going on wild treasure hunts was a little reminiscent of some of his travels with Lina's comedy group.

This was the hall.

There were a few patients loitering about, but it didn't take long to spot the one guy with a shovel. So he got there first? Well, at least that meant Anise wouldn't have to wait alone in a creepy place like this.

At a glance, the guy looked pretty plain. Average height, average build, boring haircut; not a lot of distinguishing features she could pick out. Maybe Anise was just getting too used to the company of extraordinarily handsome men, though. Oh well - the only thing to do was to make her approach.

Anise skipped over to the shovel-wielding stranger, stopped in front of him and looked up to greet him with a big smile. No matter who it was, she always had to make a good first impression! "Hello! You're my partner for tonight, right?" she asked, just to confirm. "I'm Anise!" It was only polite to introduce herself, even if her identity had to be plenty obvious.
