Nightshift 36: M31-40

[M39]

Dinner finished, Zelnick grabbed his flashlight and settled down with his journal and a pen, fully intending to catch up on taking down notes-- and finding himself too distracted to do more than scribble out vague doodles in the margins, occasionally jotting down a word or two before becoming distracted again.

Well, supposedly, allies would come by and distract him. And until then, it wouldn't hurt to try and sketch out Talana's smile from memory, the way her eyes should flash, the curl of her hair...

MOMO breathed another sigh of relief upon entering the hall, glad that she'd gotten this far without running into anything. Plus, if the voices were any indication, there were others around here as well. That helped ease the anxiety that had started to form as she made the quick trip.

Counting the doors as she went, the realian stopped in front of M39 and knocked on the door. Hopefully Kenren wouldn't mind that she'd come so early.

Kenren looked up sharply when he heard a knock at the door. He hadn't expected his team to arrive so quickly tonight. But the sooner the better, he supposed. He glanced over at Zelnick. "A couple of people are meant to be meeting me here," he explained. "We shouldn't be around too long though."

With that, he stood and went to pull open the door, smiling at the girl who was standing there. "Hey, MOMO," he said, stepping aside to let her in. "Thanks for coming. I appreciate it."

MOMO had forgotten how eerie it could be waiting alone in a hall. Since she'd joined with the History Club, it seemed the people typically met at her room--not that she minded the change tonight. Quite the opposite actually; she was glad for a little bit of change, but it was still a little scary when you were alone. Thankfully she didn't have to wait too long.

"Good evening," she replied, making a quick bow before moving into the room. "It's no problem at all; I just hope I'm not interrupting anything. I know it's early still, but," she gave a quick laugh, "it's best to get an early start, right?"

Kenren shut the door quietly after MOMO stepped inside, smiling at the girl before going to perch on the edge of his bed. "You're not interrupting anything," Kenren replied reassuringly. "I asked you to come here after all. It would be my fault if you were." Admittedly, he hadn't actually asked Zelnick if he had plans, but he wasn't planning on sticking around after all once he was healed. They had things to do.

"It is, yeah. Give us as much time as we can to see what we can get done."

The realian followed after Kenren, although she chose to remain standing. She was relieved to hear that she hadn't interrupted anything, and it didn't seem Kenren's roommate was too bothered by her presence, so that was a relief as well.

"Um, you mentioned that you needed a healing on the board, right? Would you like me to take care of that now, or..?" trailing off, she canted her head slightly. MOMO wasn't sure what their assignment for the night was, but it would likely be a good idea to take care of the healing before they left to... do whatever it was they were going to do.

Kenren nodded, giving MOMO an apologetic look. He hated having to ask her to tire herself so early in the night when they still had a mission to work on. "Yeah. I got a pretty decent bite taken out of my arm last night," he explained. He unfastened the sling and began to slowly unpeel the bandages which were wrapped around the wound, grimacing slightly when they pulled at his skin. "It doesn't need to be completely healed," he said. "I just need to be able to fight if it comes to it." And keep her safe since she was coming with him.

ZEX stared at the number on the door. This was the right place... this was where he'd wanted to go. That heavy, apprehensive feeling hadn't left him, which he found somewhat frustrating. It didn't suit him to balk in the face of conflict, no matter the consequences. Although, this was a different kind of battle than the kind he was used to waging...

His human body wasn't making this any easier for him, slow to respond and reluctant to move and shivering, and he rested his forehead against the door to keep standing. He tried to sort out his thoughts, plan what he was going to say. Cold and tired and heavy.

ZEX took a deep breath and lifted his head. He tapped his light against the door. "Captain? Are you there? It's..."

A pause, as terrible as it was, and he struggled to keep his voice even. "Please, let me in."

MOMO winced but nodded as Kenren explained what he needed. The description alone, while unpleasant, didn't sound too bad, but since he had been given a sling she assumed this wouldn't be a 'looks worse than it is' situation. She'd worked on worse than an injured arm though, so hopefully the healing wouldn't be too tiring.

"Alright, that shouldn't be any problem," she replied with a smile. She was ready to get started, but then someone spoke from the hallway and Kenren's roommate went to answer the door.

Glancing back and forth between Kenren and the other man, MOMO finally settled her gaze on Kenren. It likely wasn't any of her business, and they had their own things to take care of tonight, but she found it difficult to ignore someone who sounded like the person knocking had. "I... I'll need your hand, please."

He was relieved that MOMO seemed to think that it was treatable. He wouldn't admit it, but he had felt a certain amount of concern that maybe his arm would be useless completely. He needed to be able to protect people and help them. Having a ruined arm would have been intolerable.

He turned sharply when he heard the knock at the door, frowning at the near distraught tone of the new person's voice. He sounded pretty bad. "Get him in here," he murmured to Zelnick. "He sounds like he needs it." Once again he curse Martin Landel for what he was doing to the people here, and looked forward to the day when he could be defeated utterly. it would be more than satisfying.

He turned back to MOMO and nodded, holding out his hand towards her. "Okay?"

When his human opened the door, ZEX stared at him and he could remember him so clearly as he saw him through the viewscreen of his ship, wearing the simple red of a human Captain. That had to be real... it had to be.

At his human's question, ZEX would have shaken his head if he understood the gesture, and instead he shivered and looked down. Both his eyes were open. He opened his mouth to say something, hesitated, then reached out and hugged him as tightly as he could. If nothing else, maybe his warmth would stop his trembling.

"I..." ZEX said softly by his ear, then realized there were other people in the room. He blinked at them, confused, but didn't loosen his deathgrip on his Captain. He couldn't afford to let him go.

"I didn't know there'd be others here," ZEX said, his voice weak.

Kenren's roommate and his guest had moved to the other side of the room. Despite not knowing either of them, MOMO sincerely hoped they were both all right, but she had to remind herself to keep her mind on her work. She couldn't afford to let herself get distracted if she hoped to cast a successful Ether spell, so she forced herself to keep her attention on Kenren.

"Sorry, but I have to be in contact with the person I'm trying to heal," she explained, offering an apologetic smile. "Most people seem more comfortable with offering their hand, so that's what I tend to ask for." Not to mention, people didn't tend to injure their hands that often (at least, not the people she'd met and/or healed) so it was one of the more logical choices.

Taking hold of his hand, the realian took a deep breath. "This place prevents me from monitoring the progress myself, so I'll need you to tell me when to stop, okay?" That said, she closed her eyes and began casting her Medica spell.

"That's fine," Kenren replied, giving the girl a reassuring smile when she took his hand. "If that's what it needs, that's what it needs. I was just curious." He was grateful to be getting healed at all in the first place, so he wasn't exactly going to quibble over the details of it. And his hand wasn't injured so it wasn't like it was a hardship either.

He nodded seriously in response to MOMO's order to him. "I'll tell you, sure," he agreed, hoping that he'd be able to realise when enough was enough. He might be better off watching her face to see if she turned pale or looked like she was going to pass out or something, because he didn't want to leave her incapacitated.

He felt an odd itchy feeling in his arm, pushing away the pain that had been a throbbing ache through the entire day, and realised that that must be the spell working. Either that or something had gone horribly wrong and his arm was going to fall off. It was a weird feeling, itchy and not quite achy, but just the feeling of something happening that wasn't by rights meant to be felt. He twisted slightly to see his arm, watching the wound seem to knit together and fill out and fuck, it was weird seeing your flesh heal at an accelerated rate!

"Stop," he said as soon as the wound seemed better, as soon as he felt the pain recede and the the wound close enough for his arm to be usable without risking damaging it permanently. He smiled at MOMO warmly. "That's plenty." The hospital would take care of the rest.
