Nightshift 36: M31-40

[M39]

Dinner finished, Zelnick grabbed his flashlight and settled down with his journal and a pen, fully intending to catch up on taking down notes-- and finding himself too distracted to do more than scribble out vague doodles in the margins, occasionally jotting down a word or two before becoming distracted again.

Well, supposedly, allies would come by and distract him. And until then, it wouldn't hurt to try and sketch out Talana's smile from memory, the way her eyes should flash, the curl of her hair...

When his human opened the door, ZEX stared at him and he could remember him so clearly as he saw him through the viewscreen of his ship, wearing the simple red of a human Captain. That had to be real... it had to be.

At his human's question, ZEX would have shaken his head if he understood the gesture, and instead he shivered and looked down. Both his eyes were open. He opened his mouth to say something, hesitated, then reached out and hugged him as tightly as he could. If nothing else, maybe his warmth would stop his trembling.

"I..." ZEX said softly by his ear, then realized there were other people in the room. He blinked at them, confused, but didn't loosen his deathgrip on his Captain. He couldn't afford to let him go.

"I didn't know there'd be others here," ZEX said, his voice weak.

Kenren's roommate and his guest had moved to the other side of the room. Despite not knowing either of them, MOMO sincerely hoped they were both all right, but she had to remind herself to keep her mind on her work. She couldn't afford to let herself get distracted if she hoped to cast a successful Ether spell, so she forced herself to keep her attention on Kenren.

"Sorry, but I have to be in contact with the person I'm trying to heal," she explained, offering an apologetic smile. "Most people seem more comfortable with offering their hand, so that's what I tend to ask for." Not to mention, people didn't tend to injure their hands that often (at least, not the people she'd met and/or healed) so it was one of the more logical choices.

Taking hold of his hand, the realian took a deep breath. "This place prevents me from monitoring the progress myself, so I'll need you to tell me when to stop, okay?" That said, she closed her eyes and began casting her Medica spell.

"That's fine," Kenren replied, giving the girl a reassuring smile when she took his hand. "If that's what it needs, that's what it needs. I was just curious." He was grateful to be getting healed at all in the first place, so he wasn't exactly going to quibble over the details of it. And his hand wasn't injured so it wasn't like it was a hardship either.

He nodded seriously in response to MOMO's order to him. "I'll tell you, sure," he agreed, hoping that he'd be able to realise when enough was enough. He might be better off watching her face to see if she turned pale or looked like she was going to pass out or something, because he didn't want to leave her incapacitated.

He felt an odd itchy feeling in his arm, pushing away the pain that had been a throbbing ache through the entire day, and realised that that must be the spell working. Either that or something had gone horribly wrong and his arm was going to fall off. It was a weird feeling, itchy and not quite achy, but just the feeling of something happening that wasn't by rights meant to be felt. He twisted slightly to see his arm, watching the wound seem to knit together and fill out and fuck, it was weird seeing your flesh heal at an accelerated rate!

"Stop," he said as soon as the wound seemed better, as soon as he felt the pain recede and the the wound close enough for his arm to be usable without risking damaging it permanently. He smiled at MOMO warmly. "That's plenty." The hospital would take care of the rest.
