Nightshift 35: Main Hallway, 2-West
[from here]
There was no one in the hallway at all when the two reached the second floor. No sign at all of anyone, which struck him as strange since usually there were at least voices or light from other patients’ torches.
Siegfried did not want to linger in the hallway, not when it would put he and Xelloss at risk of being attacked.
“Stay close by,” he said, looking back over his shoulder at the dark-haired man.

At Siegfried's words, he nodded and smiled, though his grip on the shovel changed to hold it in both hands at the ready. This area was more dangerous than downstairs, and if they did encounter anything, it wouldn't be very good for him to fail to help his light source. His grip on the shovel was slightly awkward due to holding the flashlight as well, but he could adjust his grip if a real threat surfaced.

Miku peeked out of the stairwell curiously and removed Sousuke's shirt, her homemade mask, from her face. He was right; the smell from below was gone. Somehow, that relieved Miku. "We'll be quick across, I think." She didn't see anyone, anyway, except for other patients ahead of them.

Was it here, that they had encountered the swordsman? Or was it closer to the railing overlooking the Sun Room? Subaru couldn't remember clearly, all he could see in his mind's eye was Hinasaki-san's protector being sliced open, blood everywhere, and it was his fault... Shaking it off, Subaru gestured with his flashlight. "We'll pass one hallway, and then the next one is the one that leads to the kitchen."

"If we find scrap metal my roommate can make them into weapons," he pointed out quietly, thinking of what he had seen Roy do before. The alchemy was a curious thing to watch, but it was also very useful. Knives didn't bother sharing that. "Do you need something or is that weapon you have actually worth something?" Knives hadn't acknowledged the wrapped up thing until then and he wasn't about to take it away from Subaru. He was more curious what the boy's talents were.

Caution, as far as Elle was concerned, was something that other people did. As she stepped into the hallway, she sent a cascade of blue sparks racing along the wall into the darkness. They fizzled out after fifteen or twenty feet, but they did reveal a perfectly empty corridor. No patients, no monsters. Not that she really expected to see a monster - she'd been here four days and had only ever seen one, and it had already been... dealt with.

More emptiness and more silence. Roy knew that the second floor wasn't quite as popular now that there were other destinations, but hopefully that would work to their advantage. The monsters tended to gather where most of the patients were, didn't they?
"I'd been working my way across," he recalled to himself, as well as for Hughes' benefit. He knew that his friend had come with him on this job at least once or twice before, but he wasn't sure if he'd been there for the most recent time - and even that was close to a week ago.
He took a right and slowly started down the hall as he tried to remember where he'd been and where he hadn't.

Hughes kept his back to Roy, however, now that they were in the hall, and kept his eyes and ears peeled for any hint of something coming.

Surprisingly enough, when Sai checked there didn't appear to be anything dangerous the next hall over. At least not so far. There were a couple patients, but they weren't engaged in the sort of combat that would normally signify someone being under the Institute's control for the night.
He glanced back over his shoulder. "There are supply closets down the hall and to our right. I haven't seen much of what's down the halls in front of us."

Besides, he was still wary of that central balcony. Even if it seemed clean for the first night out of all the nights he'd come up to this floor, he wasn't trusting it. And if he recalled the maps correctly, there were sorts of storage up these hallways too, perhaps not as likely to be picked over. If nothing else, his goal of exploration could continue.

The gargoyle stopped here. The next hall over was where he'd been beaten up by Danny Phantom, and... was that Vlad? Odd that the two of them would return to the same area on the same night. He seemed to be working with someone else at the moment, however, so he didn't do much to try and get his attention for a greeting.
From here he'd have to leave directions up to Nate. Hopefully the pharmacy wouldn't be too far.

"This way." There were more people, yes, but no signs or sounds of fighting, be they past or present, at least in the immediate vicinity.

How odd, there didn't seem to be many people up here. Not that Joshua was too surprised, as there hadn't been any the night before either, but... it seemed much more lonely when he didn't have his partner with him. No man was an island, and even if he knew nothing about most of the people here, Joshua was a rather social sort of animal. Not even a Mr. H to speak with was a bit of a pain.
Ah well. He'd find someone, all he'd need was a better vantage point.

"We're almost there," Naomi said, stepping out of the stairwell into the hall. It was practically empty. She slowed some, on high alert. Just in case.

He opened the door and quickly moved across the main hallway, knowing that those places were hotbeds for monsters. "This way," he muttered, though he imagined Matt had seen a map.

Reno moved up the stairs, careful but not dawdling. All his time here, and he'd never been attacked inside the stairs before.
At the top was another story, though. He pulled open the door a crack before opening it all the way.
"Find anything interesting in town?" he asked, directing it more to Elena than Rude. He'd been with Rude in town, after all.

They were going to need tools and materials, but they'd work on that later. For now, in all this confusion, he was happy to do things one at a time.

So many things happening here. Unnatural heat, unnatural light, blood, lots of blood, a deformed corpse, human heartbeats.
Not what was drawing her...
The naked girl padded across the cold floor, hardly batting an eyelash at the events occurring around her, and continued down the hallway.

He switched the torch off as soon as he got to a place that he knew. He just needed to keep heading forwards and then there should be the hallways above the Sun Room. He'd seen the balconies from below during his few dayshifts here.

"A-ah, um...why are you going to the autopsy rooms?" Hanatarou ventured, moving a little closer to Badou as he spoke, lest the redhead not realize who he was talking to. He was fairly easy to miss, after all. "Did, ah, someone d-die?"
While the healer might be interested in visiting the medical facilities in the building, he wasn't quite sure why someone else would. Kaiji had mentioned finding things to cut with, and there might be some sharp objects in there out of necessity, but was it really so difficult to find anything more, well, useful? He'd never want to think a bad thing about Hisagomaru, but its shikai form had drawn some mocking from other shinigami...

He figured maybe they had a chance of survival (a decent chance even, or he would have turned around halfway) but it was still a messed up situation. At least there were people crazy enough to go with him anyway. "It could be worse."

Once at the top of the stairs, Sheena slowed down to a light trot, her breathing increased but not labored, as she looked back and forth down each direction. That block of emptiness Ritsuka had pointed out on the map was to the left, so she headed that way.
Oh, there was a pile of monster goo in the hallway.
"Here, I'll let you down," she said, stopping and crouching down so the boy on her back could get off. She never took her eyes off the pile of monster goo, just in case. "I think that... thing over there is dead."

"...we should ge--"
It hit him like a slap in the face. The constant call was suddenly gone - all of it. Without a trace. Ritsuka suddenly felt alone, like a small pebble lost in the sea and he faltered, grabbing his head. What in the world just happened?
It only took a moment to figure it out: Soubi was either dead or he'd cut the connection. Was it so bad that he couldn't call Ritsuka now? Or was it that he didn't want Ritsuka to come in the first place? Pulling his flashlight out, the Sacrifice clicked it on and started running down the hall. "Something's wrong! Come on!"

All Eileen wanted to do was rest. She was exhausted, mentally and physically, and she could feel the curse that pulsed weakly through her draining what strength she had left. Just like before.
But they had to keep going. And hopefully, eventually, one of them would recognize where they were....

This was - well, almost familiar. Yukito blinked around at what he could see of the area, trying to figure out how he knew it, and felt a sudden rush of dizziness that made the floor shift under his feet again. Memories of this place washed over him, though there was a disorienting tinge of unfamiliarity about them, like he was seeing through another's eyes.
And at the same time his two selves shifted in their new and uncertain balance, he thought he felt...something. Familiar and yet not and intriguing enough that it distracted him even from his current companions. "This way," he said softly, not sure who was speaking, and taking a couple of steps away from the others. "I have to go...to find..."
Find - what? He wasn't sure, and so he paused for a moment. "My...friends?" One side of him said no, he didn't have friends didn't need friends, the other disagreed and the conflict just made it even harder to think.

Itachi slipped carefully out into the hallway, one hand on the knife in his pocket and the other sweeping his flashlight around the area. Nothing, that he could see. Of course, he could not see very far. Hopefully Jiraiya would alert him to any dangers, without Itachi having to show that he could not see them for himself.

So it'd make sense if the patients were turned somewhere up here--and Jiraiya briefly wondered who gave Itachi this mission. But the mission goals also meant that they'd be in danger. Damn. That meant it was best that Jiraiya told him. Hopefully Itachi was smart enough to realize that Jiraiya would still be useful, just because of his size and strength.
"I seem to have all my physical abilities available," Jiraiya stated slowly. "But I currently do not possess any real weapons."
So far, he hadn't noticed that Itachi had trouble seeing. Like any good Uchiha, he was good at hiding it.
