Day 21: Lunch

Hikaru and Kaoru had been so caught up in their little game that they initially hadn't heard the intercom go off. The new "ding" system was far less jarring than the old SCREECH, and as such, wasn't as easily heard, even in a place as quiet as the library. All too soon, the nurses came to separate the twins and take them to the next activity--lunch.

It only felt like a few minutes since breakfast, somehow, and yet Hikaru was starved. The lunch selection was ridiculously Americanized food of the "Pan Asian" genre, as bad as when his family had wanted Japanese food in California and had gone to the "nicest" restaurant in the English language guidebook. He cringed visibly when the surly cafeteria worker poured sauce on his rice--which was supposed to be plain--but...food was food, and he wasn't feeling terribly picky right now. At least it smelled all right.

One of the good things about being the first one into the cafeteria was having his pick of the tables. Hikaru chose one of the larger ones, saving seats for Kaoru, Tamaki, and (in a fit of hopefulness) Haruhi.

He hoped they'd come soon. He hated being alone.

Takaya nodded. "Yeah, the monsters." He shook his head, though not in a no.

"Yeah, I was in the hallway with that fucking bug, but I wasn't one of the morons trying to fight it." He had been the only moron to get hurt too. How unfair. "I wouldn't have wanted anyone to fight that," he said. "With abilities, maybe, but like this?" He shook his head again. "Fuck that."

Naoe felt very intense anger towards this place for putting Takaya in a situation where he could get hurt, where he did get hurt. The only sign of it was the tightening of his fists. He appeared to be thoughtful. "A scorpion..." he said.

He frowned very, very slightly. "Your abilities have been limited as well?" he asked. "Who could be behind this?" his mind was alive with the possibilities. He lowered his voice, not sure how much information they should be giving this Ari person, even if Naoe could sense nothing dangerous about the boy at the moment, that didn't mean anything with his powers the way they were. "Who is around who can use this powerful of an Absorption Spell?" He knew the boy would be next to useless naming off their enemies, after all he wasn't Kagetora (at least not at the moment) but he had to know if Takaya had seen or heard anything that might give them a clue.

Ari continued to pick at his food as he listened to the two men talking. He kinda agreed with Takaya about not wanting anyone to fight those things, but if they had to fight, he would have liked to have been able to help.

Naoe's response, however, made him pause. "What's an 'Absorption spell'?" he asked, giving the older man a quizzical look. They had magic and spells in his world, but he had never heard of that particular one...

Takaya finally turned and snarled at Naoe. "Yeah, they are limited. I'm sure you figured that one out already," he snapped.

How dare this man feign concern for him. He'd abandoned him. Left him to be kidnapped and brought here. How dare he?!? He stood up, slamming his hands down on the table.

"I don't know anything, but everyone talks about the Head Doctor guy like he's in charge. Maybe you should ask him. He'll be more useful to you anyway." Takaya would have said more, but a nurse walked up to him and smiled happily, confidence coming from the larger orderly standing behind her.

"Alan? Ready to go to the Music Room?" Takaya spun to face her and flipped her off.

"Fuck you, lady." But despite his vehemence, Takaya followed her, pausing to bow his head towards Ari. "Nice to meet ya Ari. Be careful out there."
