Nightshift 33: Greenhouse Yard

[from here]

With the door shut and Toph safe for the moment, Renamon allowed herself to think again. Her body would be feeling the pain soon, as soon as she calmed down, and she needed to search the outside before it set in. She didn't see anything, but she was learning that meant nothing. And then she realized she didn't need her flashlight.

Renamon stepped further out into the night. She was instantly more relaxed. Outside in the night? She was in her natural element. She wasn't confined in a dark place with walls that felt like death. She was outside, at night, when she was the most powerful. Well, when she was a Digimon.

At that second the pain decided to set in, and she breathed in sharply. That was it. She wouldn't wear the sweatshirt anymore, not if it got caught on things and got her hurt like this. She gently peeled it off, then examined what she could of her wound. It was long and diagonal, nearly the length of her upper arm, and seemed deep. She couldn't see the bone, but it was bleeding freely. An inch, maybe. She wasn't good at determining things like this. She balled up the sweatshirt and held it to the wound tightly.

Once all that was completed, then she looked around more thoroughly.

As agile as an acrobat from having lived its life bouncing from branch to branch high above the ground, the squirrel was used to being able to dodge and change course at a second's notice. It turned into the blow, moving with it, back feet digging into the ground to brace it as it grasped Allen's wrist as it would a backlashing branch. A shift of its weight and it attempted to drag the smaller boy close, hopefully off balance, its tail twitching irritably behind it.

Rhode clung tighter when Allen and the squirrel began fighting each other. She was pretty light, so it wasn't hard to keep her hold however jarring things got.

When the squirrel tried to drag Allen to the ground, she made a face at it and aimed a Mary Jane at it's head. "Get off him!" she ordered.

Even if it wasn't an Akuma, Allen tried to focus on the fight in front of him. At least it wasn't anything human. He didn't think he'd have the heart to fight. The squirrel was a lot smarter than he'd thought though, or faster at the very least. But when the squirrel grasped on, the Innocence crackled with life and burned the creature's skin and whatever else might be touching the weapon. Good thing Rhode was clear of his arm or she'd have a difficult time regenerating from his attack.

Though Allen could usually lift hundreds of pounds easily using his Innocence, he himself was only a little over a hundred pounds. He was pulled forward, though he tried to drag his feet on the ground, but it wasn't enough to upend his balance. His long, hooked fingers, each one now several feet long, curled around the squirrel's body and he squeezed, burning and crushing the rodent at the same time.

Tyki still remained clear from the boy's Innocence. There was no sense in jumping in just yet when he'd only get in the way.

That fur-ball was much faster than it looked. Not that it helped much now that the boy decided to squeeze it.

The scent of singed fur filled the air as the large rodent shrieked, the sound unearthly and echoing in the open area. It writhed in pain, beady eyes glaring and mouth open in a hiss as it sought to get away from the pain. That failing, it resorted to instinct to get itself free. Jaws clamped down on Allen's wrist, teeth meant for cracking nuts putting pressure on the grip that trapped it in pain, short claws scrabbling at flesh.

When Allen was pulled, Rhode went with him as though she were riding a bucking bronco, holding tight as she had all night long. If morning came around soon, she might end up in his bed instead she was holding that tightly.

She couldn't kick at the thing anymore with Allen's Innocence in the way, so she let him do all the work. He was willing and doing it all already, so why should she complain?

If Allen's arm had still been something of flesh and blood, it might have hurt, might have made some difference, but the beast might as well have been tearing at a wall of metal for all the good it did. The biting pinched, but had little effect. Still, he didn't want the creature to suffer. Turning away, he tightened his grip, crushing the beast in his massive claw.

Tyki observed as the fur-ball struggled in the boy's grip. There wasn't much else he could do anyway, with the Innocence being in the way and all. He wasn't that much of an idiot.

And if the Exorcist wanted to do all the work by himself this badly, who was Tyki Mikk to stop him?

This time, the crushing grip was too much, even with the bulk the squirrel boasted. It gave one last unearthly shriek of pain before the sound of bones snapping filled the air and the giant beast went limp and lifeless in Allen's grip.

After the shriek, Rhode stared at the still ball of fluff and blinked. "Ah, you killed it..." she said simply as though they all hadn't really been in danger. Now that it wasn't trying to hurt anything she didn't see that it was any more of a threat than an Akuma.
