Nightshift 33: Greenhouse Yard

[from here]

With the door shut and Toph safe for the moment, Renamon allowed herself to think again. Her body would be feeling the pain soon, as soon as she calmed down, and she needed to search the outside before it set in. She didn't see anything, but she was learning that meant nothing. And then she realized she didn't need her flashlight.

Renamon stepped further out into the night. She was instantly more relaxed. Outside in the night? She was in her natural element. She wasn't confined in a dark place with walls that felt like death. She was outside, at night, when she was the most powerful. Well, when she was a Digimon.

At that second the pain decided to set in, and she breathed in sharply. That was it. She wouldn't wear the sweatshirt anymore, not if it got caught on things and got her hurt like this. She gently peeled it off, then examined what she could of her wound. It was long and diagonal, nearly the length of her upper arm, and seemed deep. She couldn't see the bone, but it was bleeding freely. An inch, maybe. She wasn't good at determining things like this. She balled up the sweatshirt and held it to the wound tightly.

Once all that was completed, then she looked around more thoroughly.

What had occurred was no more than a mystery to Toph. She felt weight on her chest, movement, and finally, cold air and dirt beneath her knees. It took perhaps a minute or so to fully comprehend what had occurred, but when she did, the earthbender merely stood up.

The relative stillness beneath her indicated they were safe, at least from that clicking bug. Their adversary had been resilient to Renamon's attack, but it was Toph's lack of, well, anything that bothered the girl. Controlling the earth had been so ingrained; Toph felt strange without it. Sure, she had gone in this fashion several times in her misadventures with the Avatar, but this was the first instance there was no explanation.

Aside from the institute, of course.

Toph let out an annoyed breath. "Guess those guys were right about giant bugs," she muttered angrily before realizing the previous silence held more than what was considered natural. "Oh, hey. You okay?"

[identity profile] neutral-jing.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
The breeze outside was certainly refreshing, more so than the initial entry into the yard. Toph let out a puff of air, glad to be breathing in cold air again.

It also sounded as though they had another way inside. "Sweet," she muttered. "Hopefully, it'll stay there." Not only for their safety but also for others nearby. No one needed to run across that thing.

Nodding once, Toph readied the shards in her hands and led the duo to the door.

Yohji slipped out into the greenhouse yard, pausing to listen for anything that might be moving before flicking on his flashlight and taking a better look around. It seemed empty for now at least. He waied for Omi to slip up beside him and hen headed across the courtyard quickly, sticking to the walls as much as he could.

He reached the wall and turned back to face Omi. "What do you think? Can we get over it?"

[identity profile] daddyslilkiller.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Omi followed quietly, glad of the moonlight that meant he didn't have to rely so much on his flashlight.

He missed his goggles almost as much as he missed his explosives.

He eyed the outside wall. It might not be easy, but it should be doable, so he nodded. "I think so. Give me a boost, first. I don't want to go over the wall and find myself jumping into a moat or something."

[identity profile] damned-monsters.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Omi's voice had been a little too loud for their sensitive ears. Five of them opened beedy eyes, disturbed by the sounds coming from the other side of the wall. They didn't like the sounds, which is perhaps why they found their home next to the walls of the institute. Nothing ever escaped landel's before, so they were able to sit in blissful silence.

But this was a good sound. It was the sound of prey. And so the five giant bats took flight, their decaying bodies swooping over the walls and down upon the unsuspecting assassins, screeching loudly as they descended upon the boy who had just recently been eyeing the wall.

"Yeah, I think we can manage to at least get up to the top and survey the outside." And see if this was a decent point for getting out or if they needed to try for a better spot. It'd suck to just be jumping over into a nest of snakes or something. Maybe a monster breeding pit.

He paused, hearing an odd beating sound approaching that he could quite place. It sounded like... wings?

Before he could react, the bats were there, heading for them, especially Omi. Yohji pulled out the knife and lunched for them, lashing out with the blade in the hope of catching a couple of wings. Enough damage to get them out of the air maybe.

[identity profile] daddyslilkiller.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Bats. Why did it have to be bats?

He dodged back into a roll, coming up in a crouch far enough away to give Yohji room to move without hitting Omi in the process. A pair of pens were already leaving his hand as he settled into the crouch, even as he tried to find the animals again with his flashlight beam, to be replaced by his own knife. If there was one thing he'd learned at Landel's, it was that nothing stayed at a distance very long.

[identity profile] damned-monsters.livejournal.com 2008-07-18 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Omi's pen smacked into one of the bats, distracting it enough for Yoji's blade to easily sink into one of its wings, effectively clipping the bat and sending it crashing into the greenhouse wall. The other four bats dove off into two separate teams, one pair swooping towards Omi, each bat aiming to bite into a differed shoulder, while the other two swooped around and made another diving attack except this time at Yohji.

[identity profile] never-learns.livejournal.com 2008-07-18 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yohji ignored the bat that was sent flying, hearing it crash into the wall but keeping his eyes on the other ones circling them. He could deal with that one later to make sure that it was dead. He went into a crouch when they turned on him, trying to force them to come lower to the ground, and shielded his eyes with one arm. It might get torn up, but at least he wouldn't be blinded. He kept a tight grip on the knife and lashed out when he spotted them getting close.

[identity profile] daddyslilkiller.livejournal.com 2008-07-18 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
..Okay, really, did he have a sign on his forehead that said 'shoulders are easy targets, go for them'? Another reason to miss his goggles- if he'd had those, he wouldn't have had to keep his head ducked to avoid losing an eye.

Of course, it was an even bigger reason to miss his explosives. And while he was at it, he missed his bows, and, oh yeah, his life that didn't involve getting attacked by evil bats.

He twisted to the side, trying to put his left shoulder out of range as he swiped at the other bat with the knife. With any luck, it'd catch the little bugger across the chest or face and he'd be done with one of them.

[identity profile] damned-monsters.livejournal.com 2008-07-18 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
One of the bats bit into Yohji's exposed arm, latching on and biting down hard. The knife still managed to hit one of the others, however, and caught it in the side. The creature shrieked in pain but was still able to launch itself back into the air. Black, viscous blood oozed from the wound and rained down on the scene as it rapidly flew in circles overhead, looking for another opening.

Omi's bat did not fair as well. His knife connected directly with one of the bat's eyes. The bat thrashed around violently in its death spasms, dangerously sharp claws still posing a significant threat to the boy as they sought purchase before the bat fluttered to the ground, lifeless. The other bat circled around as well, joining the already wounded one in the air as they prepared another assault.

[identity profile] never-learns.livejournal.com 2008-07-18 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yohji hissed in pain when he felt sharp teeth biting into his arm, claming down hard on his flesh. He could feel blood trickling down it from the wounds, but it did mean that the bad was vulnerable while it was there, and within easy reach of his blade. He rammed the knife up into the creature's chest as hard as he could, twisting it viciously as the other bat's blood rained down on him, staining his hair and skin and clothes.

[identity profile] daddyslilkiller.livejournal.com 2008-07-18 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Not for the first time, Omi was grateful to be wearing a sweatshirt rather than his customary daytime t-shirt. Otherwise, he'd likely be looking at more than a well-mauled hand. He jerked his hand to the side to dislodge the bat from his knife, crying out softly as the claws shredded skin before the bat went limp. He flexed his fingers around the handle, breathing a soft sigh of relief when there didn't seem to be any deep damage. He'd need to wrap it, but he wouldn't be losing a finger.

So that was one down, and at least one still flying. He tried to find them with the flashlight again, not trusting just his hearing when they could come from any direction.

[identity profile] damned-monsters.livejournal.com 2008-07-18 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yohji's knife sound purchase in the bat's underside, and the bat thrashed violently in response while still holding its bite on the man's arm. It flailed for half a minute before eventually going limp, letting go of his arm and falling unceremoneously to the ground in a heap.

The two remaining bats continued circling overhead, the wounded one still dripping blood below it as it flapped, although its circles were slower, more clumsy, and its flight was less level than it was before. For this round the pair would have a reprieve as the two remaining bats nevertheless sought purchase.

[identity profile] never-learns.livejournal.com 2008-07-18 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yohji made a pained noise when the bat began to struggle, feeling it rip through his arm with razor-like teeth. He felt flesh tear when the bat fell away, and took the moment's breathing room to check his arm over, wincing when he saw the holes where bits of flesh had been ripped away. No major blood vessels broken though thankfully. He pushed himself to his feet, tightening the grip on the knife and peering up at the bats for a moment, readying himself for another attack.

[identity profile] daddyslilkiller.livejournal.com 2008-07-18 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
They were really too fast of a target for him to bother losing another pen trying to hit them. He'd probably be able to tag the wounded one if his hand didn't feel like a lump of hamburger at the moment, and no way was he dropping the flashlight to go for his pens with the other hand. Not that he really wanted to drop the knife, either, at this point. So, it looked like they were all stuck waiting until someone flinched.

Didn't that feel familiar.

He tightened his grip on the increasingly slick knife handle, eyes trained on the bats. "You okay, Yohji?"

[identity profile] damned-monsters.livejournal.com 2008-07-19 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
The bats continued circling overhead, screeching in dismay at the loss of three of their kin, but the moment Omi called to Yohji they decided to make their final attack. Once again they descended upon the pair, the wounded one attacking Yohji while the healthy one swooped down after Omi.

[identity profile] never-learns.livejournal.com 2008-07-19 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yohji didn't turn back to Omi, not wanting to risk it. "I'll be fine," he said, clutching his arm to his chest and trying to hide the pain in his voice. He'd had much much worse after all. This didn't much compare to a bullet in the leg.

He was ready when the bats attacked again, and the wound that it had already received worked in Yohji's favour. It was a little slower than it should have been, giving Yohji time to raise the knife again and slash viciously at it, using his already injured arm to grab for it, trying to swat it out of the air.

[identity profile] daddyslilkiller.livejournal.com 2008-07-19 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yohji was well enough to lie to him, so Omi tried not to worry. Not that it was easy, considering, but he did try.

Just one bat this time. They didn't seem to be overly intelligent, one had practically flown straight into his knife after all, so he didn't bother considering before he moved. He jumped back, giving ground to the attack, hand holding the flashlight in front of him as a shield, even as he slashed across with the knife.

[identity profile] damned-monsters.livejournal.com 2008-07-20 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
The last two bats fell easily to the trained assasins, the wounded one falling without protest while Omi's blade clipped the wing of the healthy one, sending it crashing to the ground not far off from the other still alive, but injured bat.

Hitsugaya stepped outside and circled the greenhouse so that his back was to the greenhouse and he was facing the wall. There was a spot on the wall that looked scalable for someone his size, but first a quick survey of the area was in order. "I'll go first," Hitsugaya said. "Then help you up. Meanwhile you keep a lookout for anything coming and alert me immediately if something so much as rustles nearby." He carefully wrapped his sword back into its impromptu sheath and tied it to his back, then handed his flashlight to Artemis. His heart raced wildly. Would they actually be able to pull it off? To get out of landel's against the doctor's wishes?

He put his hands against the wall, found a crack wide enough for him to get a grip, and began to pull and push his way up the surface.
