Nightshift 30: M-A Block Hallway

[from here]
Renji paused just long enough to open the door into the first M-block, then ran in, leaving it open behind him. He headed toward the last hallway.

He did switch his flashlight on now, though.

...just in case there was another spider. And no Daemon. In which case he would do more than punch the shit out of the man when he got to him.

Takaya rounded the corner, pushing against his own mind to try and keep in control. He didn't need this shit. Not so early in the night. Maybe it was a good thing that he didn't have anyone to pal around with. It's not like he made friends easily.

He wondered what was outside. He hadn't been out there at night yet. He was so caught up in his own (and his) thoughts that he didn't notice the other guy with the papers until he was almost on top of him. He frowned.

"Dumbass. You shouldn't stay in one place too long."

Itachi flicked a disinterested glance up at the intruder. Preoccupied with the maps, which he was having trouble making out in the dark, he had no interest in conversation. Yet that comment was nonsensical. The advice was unsolicited, not to mention pointless.

"Why should I not do that?" Itachi stared nonplussed at the boy who had addressed him.

Takaya no longer needed his flashlight and as such did not have it, but he could tell that the guy was trying to read a map. In the dark. Moron.

"Because there's shit you can't see out here and you're a fucking target," he snapped, irritated by this guy's tone. About to stalk away, the cool touch to his mind stopped him.

"Where are you trying to go," he ground out, as though someone were forcing him to speak at knife point.

Itachi blinked at the boy's tone. Seeing no immediate cause for the other's anger, Itachi disregarded the tone and considered the offer of assistance.

The reference to a target would correspond to whatever trials night supposedly held, though the phrasing made it seem as though the situation was more desperate. As if the patients were being hunted. This was an interesting perspective, one Itachi had not heard yet. It most probably meant that this boy was more weak than the others he had spoken to, less able to deal with the challenges ahead and thus less willing to enjoy them than someone like Zabuza. He was probably not a worthwhile accomplice, then.

But Itachi was having difficulty with the maps, mostly because of his poor eyes. And if he couldn't read the maps. . . if the patients were being hunted. . . it would be difficult to be on his guard against attacks while simultaneously trying to navigate the institution and find a way out. Thursday had had somewhere to go, and this was the only other person who had offered to help Itachi. At this point, it would be most strategic to convince him to work with Itachi. If the boy was too weak to succeed in this environment, Itachi could leave him and continue on alone.

"I plan to find a way out of here. I am going to try these courtyard areas, first." He looked at the boy for a moment. How to persuade him? "It would be easier with two people. Come with me."

Takaya snorted. He must have been really new if he thought that would work. Hell, if it worked, it worked. It wouldn't, but at least it was something to do.

"Okay," he said with a frown. "I'll go with you." He turned. "Courtyard's this way." He didn't bother waiting.
