Nightshift 30: M-A Block Hallway

[from here]
Renji paused just long enough to open the door into the first M-block, then ran in, leaving it open behind him. He headed toward the last hallway.

He did switch his flashlight on now, though.

...just in case there was another spider. And no Daemon. In which case he would do more than punch the shit out of the man when he got to him.

It wasn't far, not really. A hop, skip, and side-step down the hall with a dance and some music in the middle somewhere. She hoped and didn't that they were done with it, but it was impossible to be sure. Close enough, and maybe the smell would make up for the lack of sight. It was a gamble. It was always a gamble.

With Lucivar's hand still in hers, provided he didn't yank it away, River continued down the hall.

"Can't see so good. Stars and blankets and storms coming, you know."

[identity profile] eyrien-prick.livejournal.com 2008-02-29 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Lucivar looked strangely at the slip of a girl who lead him down the dark hallway talking about stars and blankets. He murmured in agreement though he worried that she was leading him into some sort of danger. "With fights there are always storms," he said. "Who is it that is fighting? Is someone in trouble?"

Cid passed through the hallway at the end of the cell block as quickly as he could. M75 was the room number that Barret had given him, and the small way that Cid had ventured out into the Institute had at least made him sure where that was.

Well, this didn't look right either. Damn it all, why'd this place have to be so confusing?

Ticked off, Zoro stopped where he was and tried to gain his bearings. Where the hell was he...??

Luffy's pace was fast and solid, and he wasn't going to stop for anything. Well, unless a monster showed up, then he'd probably wind up trying to fight it. But until then, he'd carry on like it was a regular adventure.

Except it was right about then that he rammed into someone who'd been standing in the hallway, which sent the pirate stumbling back until he was sprawled out on the floor, his flashlight rolling away from him. "Ow!" he said belatedly, though a part of him was amazed he could go from running forward to looking up at the ceiling within a split moment.

Artemis wasn't sure how he was going to intercept Renji before he got within the vicinity of Hitsugaya's room, but he could try. Of course, if the Captain came out of his room and heard what he was talking about, he'd have to kill himself right there. Which could be messy and result in him being removed from the organization. Decisions, decisions...

He kept moving for now. M23...

Oh my God...

Artemis watched, hand on the hilt of his sword as an enormous beast suddenly shrunk back into a man and continued conversation with Hitsugaya. He pressed his back against the wall, keeping out of sight, eyes wide. What was that?

The thoughts of Haku and his relationship issues were driven completely from his mind. Now what should he do? Just wait here? Hitsugaya said he needed to meet with one of his subordinates, after all. Maybe this was the opportunity he was waiting for?

That is, if he wasn't killed where he stood by something or someone...

He scanned the hallway quickly and, not seeing any immediate threats, walked quickly to the correct hallway, his large hand on the small of Miku's back. If it weren't such a dire situation, it might have looked like he was escorting her.

Miku, meanwhile, kept her eyes peeled for any sign of Ritsuka or Alfons. The more she worried, the more the tattoos ached.

She can smell the delicate scent of the cherry tree blossoms, though the tree is long dead and she's in the darkness of the Himuro mansion. Her heart hammers against her chest when a woman looks down at her with lifeless eyes. A woman who looks like her mother.

"Alfons-kun... he has blond hair, it's short. Ritsuka-kun is small with dark hair... he... he might be in the company of Soubi-san, who is older," and creepy, "then I am. Soubi-san has light colored hair too..." She tried to pull herself away from her dead great-grandmother's swinging body, talking softly to Sousuke as they passed the closed and open doors of the hallway.

It hurt, it hurt so much. "Ah-are you alright, Sagara-san... the tattoos..." If hers were beginning to amplify her pain, then she couldn't even imagine what his might be doing.

Once Sasuke managed to leave the room, it was essentially a straight shot to where he'd planned to meet Mark and his party. Moving at almost his normal speed (if a little more leaning on the wall than just using it as a guide), Sasuke headed for the door.

The more he strained himself, the worse the bleeding got. Peter couldn't really tell how bad the wounds were, and it was hard to judge from the pain when he couldn't pinpoint where it started and ended.

His arms were quickly getting sore under Nathan's weight, and he felt like his knees were going to give in on him with each backward step he took. He got to the end of the hall, at least, and sent a panicked look around for someone who could help.

He spotted the door that led out of the block and automatically started in that direction, deciding that he needed to keep moving so he could find someone who could-- he didn't even know what he was looking for, but he didn't know what else to do.

But halfway there, his knees finally did buckle and he crashed to the floor, taking Nathan's dead weight along with him. Once he had moved out from under his brother's body, he leaned against the wall and then cried out when the pressure against his back made the pain worse.

"Help!" he called out, voice hoarse. "Anybody! Please..." He wasn't sure how loud it was, and if anyone would even hear, but he had no other options at this point.

Making sure Skuld was following her, Max darted into the hall to crouch quickly at his side. "Peter! Are you alright? Where are you hurt?" she asked quickly, giving him her attention first since he was still conscious and could tell her what had happened. He was bleeding; it was impossible to miss, and even as she was speaking, she tore the hem off the bottom of her uniform's shirt to start making makeshift bandages.

Sousuke escorted Miku from the hallway, looking for any targets while watching her. So far, so good. The tattoos weren't flaring up angrily and rearing their ugly side-effects.

Until he heard a cry for help. It was desperate, and reminded him enough of so many screams he'd heard in his short lifetime. The mark burned, sending fresh tendrils of pain racing across his neck and shoulders. His hand flew to the mark and he coughed, trying to make the pain leave.

"S-someone needs help," Sousuke ground out. "I need to help them--follow me closely...!"

He trudged over with as much purpose as he could muster to the two men. One was unconscious, the other was bleeding--but it was difficult to see in the light.

Oh, someone had helped them. A pang of guilt made his neck throb again, and he turned away from the scene. "Let's go, Hinasaki. It's unlikely they are in this block..."

Useless again.

Running past Dias and Edgeworth in the hallway, he noticed they'd been joined by another man. Dias was going to be protecting them both tonight? Ashton wished him the best of luck.

At this point, running down the hallway, Ashton's muscles felt slightly strained. Oh no! He hadn't done his stretches for the night! He'd been so caught up in everything with the radio.. and the new woman on the radio.. and Dias.. that he hadn't had a chance. Oh, how unfortunate!

He stopped for a moment while still in the relative safety of the hall, pressing his back against the wall and then bending down, summarily stretching his legs all the way from the glutes to the quads to the calves! Yeah, that was the stuff!

Ohhh, he felt so much better now. He'd hurry on!

[from here (http://community.livejournal.com/damned/304159.html?thread=25155615); bringing Roy]

Knives continued down the hallways to get to the Sun Room. He was careful as he moved through the darkness. If he remembered correctly he just needed to get to the main hallway and then the Sunroom would be connected there, unless this place changed drastically in the night, but Roy would have mentioned if it did, after all he had been there when Knives had first woken up.

Knives was still distracted by the way he had complimented Roy earlier, though not enough to leave them both completely unguarded as they moved through the place.

At least Knives finally knew that his roommate wasn't completely mad and what he had told Knives during lockdown was true. He was half curious about the monsters, but also really didn't want to meet one until Roy felt better. He wasn't sure how much strength he had in this place quiet yet.

[identity profile] muted-flame.livejournal.com 2008-03-08 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
The highest compliment -- Roy had gotten that sort of praise before, but hardly in this context. It seemed like a strange thing to come out and say all of a sudden, so the colonel wasn't quite sure how to react.

He was more interested by the way Knives referred to him as a human. He had alluded to something similar in their conversation earlier in the day, and this seemed to be as good a time as any to ask about it. Conversation would keep him from focusing on the strain his body was still going through. "What are you?" he asked, tone even so that he didn't somehow offend the other man.

As they got toward the block's exit, Roy noticed a group of four patients gathered and crouching near the wall. One was unconscious, another bloody and bandaged -- it looked like some people were having a bad night, not that that was any surprise. As they got closer, Roy recognized one of them as the girl who had come to talk to him at dinner. He didn't want to get caught up in any conversation, so he averted his gaze as they moved past them.

Aidou had never before had to make so many concessions to account for his own... shortcomings. Being unable to fully trust in any one person's word, letting Kyon go, having to crunch time in order to feed himself and then continue to investigate Akatsuki... Before, there had always been options. He was a powerful noble with a powerful family and powerful companions, and now he was stripped down to his bare essentials.

In the small, raw primal part of his vampire temperament, it was almost a bizarre challenge. One that excited impulses that normally didn't reveal themselves in polite company.

Moving through to the main hallway, Aidou kept an eye out for any good opportunities: suitable meals to spirit into the shadows for a moment or two.

Takaya felt like shit, but then, what else was new? Maybe if he walked slowly enough, something would jump out and eat him.

It wasn't a very nice thought, but it was better than the downward spiral the rest of his thoughts were taking. He was utterly alone here. He sucked at making friends, he could only alienate people. The two people he knew and trusted were long gone and everything he did only made things worse.

What use was he? What the hell was he even here for? Only the knowledge that death didn't mean shit to something like him had kept him alive so far. That, and the faint, far hope that maybe he could see his sister again. Or even Naoe. Any of the others.

Mello's first stop was his room, where he placed the radio in his desk drawer before grabbing his notebook from under his bed and trying to decipher the notes he'd taken earlier. The mess of angles and inconsistent shorthand would have made the writing illegible to almost anyone else, but he didn't need to actually read it. A few letters were enough to jog his memory and pull up the full text...or, as much of the text remained in his mind.

None of the numbers he'd recorded would be useful. Although he imagined everyone was out doing other things (god knows why anyone would voluntarily wander the more distant hallways), he didn't want to steal from anyone important or intelligent. This was risky enough without victims who ran a decent chance of solving the mystery.

He continued to walk down the hallway, periodically pausing in front of doors and listening for movement before investigating. Still, the search turned up nothing, and he was beginning to get concerned. What would he do if he couldn't find anything? Based on what the bulletin board said, he didn't want to try to make it to the supply closets Naomi had described, but if the situation didn't improve he wouldn't have any choice. He doubted it would be possible to finish everything he needed to finish during the daytime. He just hoped there'd be enough time tonight.

As soon as Luffy entered the male block, he paused and looked at all the hallways that were lined up in front of them. "It's the first hallway," he proudly announced. His Cat Lady showed him to his room every damn day. Even with how bad his sense of direction was, it was pretty hard to miss something like that.

"Sanji!" Nami reacted, watching in horror as the blond crumpled and Zoro caught him, not effortlessly but close. The sight didn't make her blood run cold - she was too hot right now for that - but it sure did come close. She trusted that he'd be okay. If he didn't wake up once they got back somewhere safe, that's when she'd start to worry more.

They just needed to.. sit down. Just sit down and everything would be fine...

Both Luffy and Zoro seemed to know where they were going, for once in their lives, but she was ready to speak up in case they were steered in the wrong direction. "Right. It's just ahead," she confirmed woozily. She was feeling a little better, but the worry was just making what would have normally been better that much worse.

"We need Chopper," Nami said, probably repeating what was on everyone's minds. "We need Robin, too. ...I want us all together when we get out of here."

As for the clinic, she didn't really feel right using other patients' charity, either. Nami didn't want to be owing anyone any favors just yet. She'd stay good and awake while they treated Sanji, if she could just.. concentrate through this fever..

She was close now, terribly close. This was the last hallway, right? Jade had told her M-35 and that was nearby now. Just a little further.

But despite being so close Tear continued to walk slowly down the halls. Scanning the area with as much as she could using the flashlight and her own decently reliable sight. She wasn't going to risk things, even now.
