Day 30: Cafeteria, Dinner

The cafeteria was all but empty when Zelnick got there. He was a little disappointed; he had gotten the impression that patients usually ate dinner in their rooms, so he hadn't arranged to meet anyone, and there really wasn't anyone to sit by and engage in conversation yet.

Quietly, he collected dinner and a big glass of orange juice, and chose a seat near the food-serving counters. Talking for so long had made him thirsty... and, well, fruit juice was a luxury he had missed.

"Ah, now I understand," Jack said. He made a show of thinking, as if weighing his options carefully. "Unfortunately, my spare knife is on permanent loan, so there goes the only thing I was really free to wager. Though to be fair, healing blood would mostly be a curiosity for me. I hardly need it."

"Then I suppose it was a wasted suggestion," Luxord responded with a cool smile before folding the cards back between his hands. "I apologize for wasting your time, Mr. Harkness."

Ah, so he had been right. That was what this was about. "Sorry," he said, cheerfully. "I work on a first come, first serve basis. Though I suppose if you'd like to make a quick jaunt tonight, we could go see if there's another to be had where I got the first two. I'm at loose ends for the first bit of the evening." He needed something to do, after all.

"No, that's quite alright. I'm not so good with knives anyway, you see- they're rather impractical." Luxord's smile dwindled for a second, eyes taking to examining a card he had begun to flip between his fingers. "'Tis merely how you either lack anything of interest or not enough stones to put something on the line, thus a waste of time."

Really. What a shame.

Jack shrugged easily. "You can't win them all," he said. "I'm not much of a betting man, anyway, unless what's being bet are articles of clothing."

Not entirely true, but there also wasn't anything he really wanted at the moment. At least not that any of his fellow prisoners were likely to have.
