Day 30: Cafeteria, Dinner

The cafeteria was all but empty when Zelnick got there. He was a little disappointed; he had gotten the impression that patients usually ate dinner in their rooms, so he hadn't arranged to meet anyone, and there really wasn't anyone to sit by and engage in conversation yet.

Quietly, he collected dinner and a big glass of orange juice, and chose a seat near the food-serving counters. Talking for so long had made him thirsty... and, well, fruit juice was a luxury he had missed.

Omi made a little non-committal noise and shrugged. "It could be worse." He paused, smiling a little sheepishly. "Well, not much worse, but sometimes it's not so bad."

And sometimes, he couldn't tell the good from the bad. This place certainly had a way of confusing people. He poked at his food. "Better food than back home, anyway." Even if most of it wasn't exactly what he was used to.

Quatre laughed at that. "I do have to say for a prision this place does serve very good food." He kept his smile, even as they were talking about the state of things, Quatre wanted to keep a positive look on things. At least he could maybe gain a new friend. "So," he said, changing the subject. "What did you do before you were here? If you don't mind me asking." It had been a long time since Quatre had just had small talk, if Omi was in the mood for company, maybe he wouldn't mind it either.

It took effort to keep himself from dropping his head to the tabletop out of frustration. Why was everyone so focused on the past? Wasn't just being here and still alive proof that he could probably handle himself, and they should just leave it at that? Hell, if his brother was right, if that was the truth, nothing they'd done 'before' mattered, anyway, since none of it had ever happened.

He didn't let his smile slip. "I was a florist, among other things. Never thought I'd miss it so much. I wish they'd let us work in the greenhouse again. What about you?"

"A pilot," Quatre said then he shook his head. "Well lately I've been more of a politician." He paused and then thought that merited more explanation. "There was a war, back at my world, and I fought in it. Now that there is peace, someone has to work to keep it without breaking into more fighting." He smiled again. "Sometimes I found myself wishing I could just blow things up again. Guess I should be careful what I wish for, hm?"

All Omi had ever wished for was a family. It had taken a monstrous insane asylum and a 'family visit' to give that to him, or at least the memories of one. And the exact same thing kept him from knowing which 'memories' were truth.

Remember us and you can come home.

He ducked his head, stabbing his food with perhaps a bit more force than necessary. Be careful what you wish for, indeed. "People need someone willing to talk just as much as they need someone willing to blow things up, sometimes. Usually more. Sounds like you must have been pretty important in your world?"

Quatre considered Omi for a moment. The guy was troubled, or at least he seemed to be, but Quatre had just met him so he ended up making the choice no to pry.

"No more important than the others who fought," he said. "My friends."

Omi would have been thankful for that, had he known of Quatre's restraint.

"Your friends? Were they pilots, too?" He stopped himself from asking if they were here. Sometimes it was better to forget that people you 'knew' were around. Especially when they made it painfully clear that you didn't really 'know' them at all.

Quatre nodded. "There were five of us all together, but there were also a lot more soldiers who fought and many that gave their lives." There were some civilians too, such as his father, but Quatre didn't want to talk about that. "Two of them are here, but I haven't seen them in a while." He frowned. "I'm starting to get worried."

That didn't sound good. "I've got friends here, too. I don't know what I'd do if they disappeared." The visitors and Ken's attack on them during nightshift both came to mind. "They can make people change. Getting worried is probably justified."

"I've heard," Quatre said. He felt the anxiety swell up in him and then shook his head, trying to clear it. "There's also one other person from my world here. A powerful and important woman who has done much more for peace than I ever could," he smiled slightly. "Our world needs her back in one piece, much more than they need me."
