Day 30: Cafeteria, Dinner

The cafeteria was all but empty when Zelnick got there. He was a little disappointed; he had gotten the impression that patients usually ate dinner in their rooms, so he hadn't arranged to meet anyone, and there really wasn't anyone to sit by and engage in conversation yet.

Quietly, he collected dinner and a big glass of orange juice, and chose a seat near the food-serving counters. Talking for so long had made him thirsty... and, well, fruit juice was a luxury he had missed.

[Stalk away, my dearest Admiral. <3 ]

Jack smirked. "Depends on which variant you're playing," he said. "And if the hemispheres of your brain can operate independently." Not that he was claiming his could, but there were a couple species out there... "I prefer collecting them all up, myself. It's more of a challenge."

He laughed. While Luxord had a certain psychotic charm to him, it wasn't a point to be argued. "Perhaps we're asking the wrong question here," he said. "What is it that you're going to wager, my dear? I wouldn't want to offer something not in kind."

...there was something strange about being called 'my dear' by another man. Perhaps this is why Xigbar used to object when X had first taken up that habit, years ago. Maybe he should stop...

"That it is," he agreed with the slightest hint of bitterness before that grin plastered itself on his face again. "And I've many a things, but what I'm more willing to pay in is blood."

Jack's eyebrow just perked up slightly, though his smile didn't falter one bit. "Well, that's certainly an interesting little offer. However, I left my blood collection back in Wales, so I haven't the foggiest idea what I'd do with my winnings."

A chuckle at that before he shook his head. "It seems as though you don't follow, Mr. Harkness. This is not normal blood, oh no. My dear roommate had kindly bestowed the vial to me before he passed, bless his soul. Claimed it held certain healing properties, though where he'd come across it is another story. And of course, I could always give it to someone in need out of the goodness of my," Luxord paused and gave a small shrug. "Well, you understand. However, I see no fun in that at all."

What have you to wager?"

"Ah, now I understand," Jack said. He made a show of thinking, as if weighing his options carefully. "Unfortunately, my spare knife is on permanent loan, so there goes the only thing I was really free to wager. Though to be fair, healing blood would mostly be a curiosity for me. I hardly need it."

"Then I suppose it was a wasted suggestion," Luxord responded with a cool smile before folding the cards back between his hands. "I apologize for wasting your time, Mr. Harkness."

Ah, so he had been right. That was what this was about. "Sorry," he said, cheerfully. "I work on a first come, first serve basis. Though I suppose if you'd like to make a quick jaunt tonight, we could go see if there's another to be had where I got the first two. I'm at loose ends for the first bit of the evening." He needed something to do, after all.

"No, that's quite alright. I'm not so good with knives anyway, you see- they're rather impractical." Luxord's smile dwindled for a second, eyes taking to examining a card he had begun to flip between his fingers. "'Tis merely how you either lack anything of interest or not enough stones to put something on the line, thus a waste of time."

Really. What a shame.

Jack shrugged easily. "You can't win them all," he said. "I'm not much of a betting man, anyway, unless what's being bet are articles of clothing."

Not entirely true, but there also wasn't anything he really wanted at the moment. At least not that any of his fellow prisoners were likely to have.
