Day 30: Staff, Morning

Burly orderlies and agile Calm Effect nurses flooded the cafeteria from the Courtyard while regular hall nurses filed in from the Sun Room and ushered out those not involved in the rebellion. It indeed seemed as if Landel was sending out all the cavalry, and an effective cavalry they were: The riot didn't continue for much longer after the alarm sounded, though it seemed strange just how quickly all of the mutinous patients fell, even the ones who hadn't been injected with anything.

The hall nurses were quick to escort their well-behaved charges back to their rooms, praising those who hadn't joined in and chiding those who muttered under their breath in response. There were some exceptions, of course: One nice young man had even defended one of the nurses from the violent patients! Now, wasn't that exemplary behavior? Dr. Landel would be so proud to hear about it...

Within half an hour, all of the so-called "loyal" patients had been safely deposited in their rooms, and it was then that the alarm finally stopped and the true difficulty of the situation was tackled. There certainly weren't enough rooms in solitary to accommodate such rampant disobedience, and yet measures would have to be taken to ensure proper consequences for each and every patient involved. After all, something like this couldn't be allowed to happen again!

Different options were considered. Perhaps they should make an example out of the girl who had sparked the riot, but then again, perhaps not. This certainly wasn't the first case of patients attacking nurses or their peers in a crowded area, but what had been different this time was the sheer support that the other patients had shown for her. Should the staff then make examples of all those who had tried to "protect" her from the well-meaning nurses? No, there were too many for that...

In the end, it was decided that the best immediate solution would be to treat the rebellious patients in the Medical Wing while they were unconscious and then move them back to their rooms to await punishment. To ensure the safety of both their roommates and the patients themselves, however, the staff decided to securely fasten their limbs to their beds and keep them heavily drugged. Such a sad sight they were to see, but... it was necessary.

Finally, when each and every patient had been escorted back to their respective rooms, the staff hurried off to an emergency meeting upstairs. Strangely, Head Nurse Lydia was the one taking care of the proceedings in the Head Doctor's stead. She calmly told them that he was preoccupied with more urgent matters, and as she began to speak to the crowd, the staff could only wonder what could possibly be more important than an unprecedented patient riot...

"... Do the words 'secondhand smoke' and 'lung cancer' mean anything to you?" Light asked incredulously, staring at him. It was Sanji's business if he wanted to slowly kill himself, of course, but after losing half his lifespan to a useless trade, Light needed to make the most of what he had left. Dying earlier than he was meant to just because his roommate couldn't control his cravings just didn't fit into his plans.

"Look, if you want to smoke, you're welcome to do it outside, but if you want to do it in here, we're going to have a problem," he explained with a sigh. "I know you'd rather not have to wait until night falls and you can do it without the staff coming down on your head, but it's either that or not having your cigarettes at all."

"...No? Do you have a disease?" Sanji frowned, but it looked like he'd be waiting until nightshift anyway. He told himself it was probably for the best, as his stash would last longer, but all the same... He sighed, sticking the unlit cigarette back inside the pack and stashing them away with the matches.

It was just his luck he was stuck with someone with something against smoking. None of his crew had ever minded. He was just lucky Sanji could be a nice guy and not go ahead and light up anyway. (Though he might have considered it. He had little doubt he could take his roomie on, but he'd avoided sedation so far and didn't need to botch that up now.)

"No, but if you smoked around me enough, that would change." Okay, fine, there was a chance that it wouldn't, but Light wasn't about to go quote statistics and go into further detail about the matter for the benefit of someone who likely didn't care and wouldn't understand what he was saying or why it was a big deal anyway. That brought up the question of just what kind of backwater world Sanji came from, but to be perfectly honest, Light didn't care much about that either.

Once it was apparent that his roommate had given up on his cigarette, though, Light relaxed and gave him a small smile. "Thank you, Sanji-san. I appreciate it."

Sanji mumbled something indecipherable before flopping back on his bed. his roommate had better help keep him entertained until they were let out, then. They'd better not be kept in there for several hours, either. He might just have to break something.

"How long do you think they'll keep us in here for?" he grumbled, staring up at the ceiling. He didn't know what the other man was talking about in regards to his issues with smoking, but it was possible that he simply didn't have a very strong constitution. He didn't look like much of a fighter, anyway.

Light shrugged. "Probably not for too long, but I can't really say for sure. With most of the 'troublemakers' sedated or in solitary, they wouldn't really have much justification for keeping us in our rooms, but who knows? We'll have to wait and see."

He was about to imitate Sanji and flop back on his bed for lack of anything better to do when he remembered the map he'd gotten off the bulletin board earlier that day. Hadn't part of the agreement for those been to make as many copies as possible? He might as well make a start on that.

Rising from his bed, he took out his copies of the first and second floor map and went to his desk. "Did you get any of the maps that were posted?" he asked Sanji, digging out his journal and a pen. If he hadn't, it was pretty obvious who the first copies of Light's maps would go to, but if not, he could just find someone else.

The chef snorted slightly at the mention of "troublemakers." Usually he was counted in that grouping, but the way things had gone he'd hardly had any opportunity to do anything. He still didn't know if he should feel bitter about this or not. He had to keep reminding himself that because of this he wasn't sedated. This was a good thing.

When Light brought up the maps, Sanji shook his head. "I don't need them," he said smoothly. "One of my nakama is an excellent navigator. She'll make maps superior to any anyone's already posted. It would be an insult to use someone else's map."

... Uh huh. Right. Remembering the expression Sanji had worn the last time he'd been thinking about that navigator, Light decided to let that one go. Besides, he didn't know much about her abilities or anything else about her aside from the fact that Sanji seemed to have a crush in her, so there was no sense in pressing the matter.

Shrugging, he set to work. "Maybe you and your crewmates should affiliate with the Arts and Crafts club. If the maps your navigator can make really are that good, they could help a lot of people."

"Maybe," Sanji mumbled, not really looking back at his roommate as he gave this some thought. "I think I heard they, we, were already affiliated with one of the other groups. Unless it's perfectly fine to work with more than one." Which was perfectly plausible. People had their different issues, after all. Though the more everyone worked together, the more likely they were to get out of this mess. (As long as "working together" didn't involve a mass attack on the staff. That, at least, had proven to be ineffective.)

"I'd have to take it up with her and the rest of the crew. She can be rather particular."
