Day 30: Staff, Morning

Burly orderlies and agile Calm Effect nurses flooded the cafeteria from the Courtyard while regular hall nurses filed in from the Sun Room and ushered out those not involved in the rebellion. It indeed seemed as if Landel was sending out all the cavalry, and an effective cavalry they were: The riot didn't continue for much longer after the alarm sounded, though it seemed strange just how quickly all of the mutinous patients fell, even the ones who hadn't been injected with anything.

The hall nurses were quick to escort their well-behaved charges back to their rooms, praising those who hadn't joined in and chiding those who muttered under their breath in response. There were some exceptions, of course: One nice young man had even defended one of the nurses from the violent patients! Now, wasn't that exemplary behavior? Dr. Landel would be so proud to hear about it...

Within half an hour, all of the so-called "loyal" patients had been safely deposited in their rooms, and it was then that the alarm finally stopped and the true difficulty of the situation was tackled. There certainly weren't enough rooms in solitary to accommodate such rampant disobedience, and yet measures would have to be taken to ensure proper consequences for each and every patient involved. After all, something like this couldn't be allowed to happen again!

Different options were considered. Perhaps they should make an example out of the girl who had sparked the riot, but then again, perhaps not. This certainly wasn't the first case of patients attacking nurses or their peers in a crowded area, but what had been different this time was the sheer support that the other patients had shown for her. Should the staff then make examples of all those who had tried to "protect" her from the well-meaning nurses? No, there were too many for that...

In the end, it was decided that the best immediate solution would be to treat the rebellious patients in the Medical Wing while they were unconscious and then move them back to their rooms to await punishment. To ensure the safety of both their roommates and the patients themselves, however, the staff decided to securely fasten their limbs to their beds and keep them heavily drugged. Such a sad sight they were to see, but... it was necessary.

Finally, when each and every patient had been escorted back to their respective rooms, the staff hurried off to an emergency meeting upstairs. Strangely, Head Nurse Lydia was the one taking care of the proceedings in the Head Doctor's stead. She calmly told them that he was preoccupied with more urgent matters, and as she began to speak to the crowd, the staff could only wonder what could possibly be more important than an unprecedented patient riot...

"My name is Sparda," Sparda held out his hand for a handshake, noting his roommate's appearance. There was only the slightest indication that he wasn't human, mostly from the hair color, as humans generally only had that shade of hair when they were old.

This place certainly was full of interesting beings, reincarnated gods and other demons and who knew what else.

"Arhcer," he replied, simultaneously accepting the handshake.

That was the same name he'd given Hisoka, and it helped to be consistant. His real name didn't really matter that much anymore.

As his hand gripped his roommate's Archer could feel the calluses on his palm. Immediately he could tell Sparda was accustomed to holding a weapon, probably a sword. Archer could tell, after all his hand was in the same condition.

Although, it was probably best for everyone that Archer's senses were dulled in this place. He could tell Sparda was different from other people, but that was all. If he had known Sparda was a demon Archer would feel compelled to outright kill him.

"I'm kinda new here. I was hoping someone could fill in the blanks."

"Well, this place pretends to be a hospital during the day, but at night monsters roam the hall, patients are turned against one another, and occasionally taken away. That is the briefest explanation I can give." There was other important information, so Sparda moved on to that as he sat down on his bed.

"In addition, any powers that you might have had, special abilities that are not normal of average humans, will have been greatly weakened or removed entirely."

"Yeah, I heard about that. Another patient and I were in the middle of talking when all hell broke in the cafeteria."

Once again Archer was reminded of that incosiderate young woman. She probably got her just deserts. The only explanation he got was that she snapped. Well, at least she was in good hands.

"He told me about the day and night shifts, and even mentioned the powers but didn't go into much detail. He also mentioned some kind of brainwashing going on. I'm interested in the organized movements going on and getting a weapon. I've heard the alchemists can help with that, do you know them?"

There was no use beating around the bush. Besides it was best to talk about these things where it was safe and prudent instead of waiting till nightfall.

"I haven't met the alchemists, and while I do have a weapon, I am unsure if the man who gave it to me is still offering them in exchange for assistance during the night. Though there are several groups... I believe the 'cooking' group is the one you would be interested in, though 'arts and crafts' might also be able to get a weapon for you if you are willing to work with them," This man was certainly straightforward and to the point, but Sparda couldn't blame him.

No doubt he wanted to get back to the life he had outside this place, but it wasn't as easily done, even with a weapon. Though he certainly understood the desire to be armed.

"I see. Thanks for the info."

It didn't hurt to be polite, and Sparda was being helpful. Well, it was somewhat dissappointing that Sparda couldn't introduce the alchemists to him, but at least he could point Archer in the right direction. Sparda was right. Archer did want to get out of this place, but it wasn't like he had anywhere to go but the next mission.

Archer also noticed when Sparda mentioned humans earlier. Would a human really refer to others as human? Wouldn't they say something like people? However, it was pretty thin, and he couldn't draw any concrete conclusions from it so he let it drop. There were worse things out there... probably.

He'd really like to get a solid weapon from someone else instead of forging his own. With his reduced powers there was no telling how it would turn out, but Archer was sure he could afford a Trace or two.

"Well, what's your opinion about weapons and these groups? For example who's the most reliable or effectively organized group. Do they have any hidden or controversial agendas?"

The last thing Archer wanted was to be used like a pawn again. Sparda seemed like a decent guy, and even though there was no basis for it, Archer felt like he could trust him.

"And what about that guy who made your weapon? I don't want to put him on the spot, but I'd like to get my hands on a weapon if I can."

A weapon probably wouldn't make things much easier, but it was definitely better than nothing. Archer could fight unarmed, but he was much better when holding a blade.

"As far as I can tell there are no hidden agendas, the arts and crafts group appears to be more focused on helping those who cannot defend themselves. The cooking group seems to be more focused on making weapons, and a few days ago a person put up a notice saying that he was looking for 'heroes' if that's more your style," Sparda considered speaking with Momo about joining the arts and crafts group, as that did seem to make the most sense for him.

But at the same time he did not like making such commitment to a group and taking orders from someone else, he would have to decide what to do about all this.

Sparda looked towards the door as the intercom announced a change in shift. "I suppose I will see you at dinner, as they usually bring us back to our rooms for it."
