Day 30: Staff, Morning

Burly orderlies and agile Calm Effect nurses flooded the cafeteria from the Courtyard while regular hall nurses filed in from the Sun Room and ushered out those not involved in the rebellion. It indeed seemed as if Landel was sending out all the cavalry, and an effective cavalry they were: The riot didn't continue for much longer after the alarm sounded, though it seemed strange just how quickly all of the mutinous patients fell, even the ones who hadn't been injected with anything.

The hall nurses were quick to escort their well-behaved charges back to their rooms, praising those who hadn't joined in and chiding those who muttered under their breath in response. There were some exceptions, of course: One nice young man had even defended one of the nurses from the violent patients! Now, wasn't that exemplary behavior? Dr. Landel would be so proud to hear about it...

Within half an hour, all of the so-called "loyal" patients had been safely deposited in their rooms, and it was then that the alarm finally stopped and the true difficulty of the situation was tackled. There certainly weren't enough rooms in solitary to accommodate such rampant disobedience, and yet measures would have to be taken to ensure proper consequences for each and every patient involved. After all, something like this couldn't be allowed to happen again!

Different options were considered. Perhaps they should make an example out of the girl who had sparked the riot, but then again, perhaps not. This certainly wasn't the first case of patients attacking nurses or their peers in a crowded area, but what had been different this time was the sheer support that the other patients had shown for her. Should the staff then make examples of all those who had tried to "protect" her from the well-meaning nurses? No, there were too many for that...

In the end, it was decided that the best immediate solution would be to treat the rebellious patients in the Medical Wing while they were unconscious and then move them back to their rooms to await punishment. To ensure the safety of both their roommates and the patients themselves, however, the staff decided to securely fasten their limbs to their beds and keep them heavily drugged. Such a sad sight they were to see, but... it was necessary.

Finally, when each and every patient had been escorted back to their respective rooms, the staff hurried off to an emergency meeting upstairs. Strangely, Head Nurse Lydia was the one taking care of the proceedings in the Head Doctor's stead. She calmly told them that he was preoccupied with more urgent matters, and as she began to speak to the crowd, the staff could only wonder what could possibly be more important than an unprecedented patient riot...

River was wheeled into her room, a picture of stillness and serenity in place of the cold fire that had burned into her eyes moments ago in the heat and heart of battle. Glancing down at her with a vaguely irritated look in her eye, the nurse sighed, leaving the restrained girl to her own nightmares as the heavy door slammed shut behind her.

Silence hung heavily in the room as River didn't make a sound, lost in her own, twisted web of dreams and eternities. The girl was sleeping, and the weapon was dormant. Hours, minutes, seconds... All of it was the same here, the eerie forever clinging to her as she lay still, awaiting punishment, execution, or pardon.

"I'm glad to see... some girls... know... to behave..." Nia vaguely heard the nurse speak as they made their way down the hallway, but she just didn't have the heart to pay attention to the woman's 'encouraging' words. It was all so strange and very scary to her, but not in the way that some would assume her to think.

She was used to battles. She was used to the idea that some things just had to be taken by force. But what she wasn't used to was how everyone looked so utterly helpless, even when the fire in their eyes burned so brightly. Nia was always the hopeful one in the group, the one that believed that if someone wished hard enough, then they would make it through to the end.

So, in a way, one could say that she just couldn't grasp the idea of defeat.

It didn't take long for them to reach her room, and after a small pat on the back the nurse left her to her own desires. She'd been told before hand that her roommate had been the one that started the riot, and that she should stay as far away as she could. But to Nia, that would've been like trying to stay away from Simon who had been the Dai-Gurren Brigade's fearless leader through the end.

Her steps were small and unsure at first, but the former princess made her way towards the other bed where her roommate slept. Just like before she could see those long brown strands weaving their way over the pillow, but now Nia had a face to go with that hair. The teen eyed the straps that held the other down, but she made no move to untie them just yet in case it'd wake the girl.

She was quite content with hovering over her, watching her with worry, almost like she had seen a good friend get hurt.

River didn't move for some time, a peaceful statue, a lifeless doll... Something of the sort. Outwardly, she was the picture of serenity itself, but inwardly her mind raced against itself, struggling to keep up with itself.

When the paths crossed, her eyes suddenly opened wide, still glazed over and quite focused on the ceiling as opposed to the girl that was standing over her. It was certainly a somewhat eerie sight.

The minutes seemed to drag on for hours as Nia stood there with that same worried expression on her face, wondering what exactly had they done to the sleeping girl. But her legs were starting to feel a little numb, so it would've good to at least take a chair over.

However, her eyes wandered away for just a moment to look for something that would suffice before turning back, blinking repeatedly when her roommate's face changed dramatically. Nia watched her with curiosity before glancing upwards in the direction she'd been looking and saw nothing of real interest. Maybe she was still really sleepy.

"Good morning!" The former princess finally spoke, voice even softer than usual as to not startle the girl. Now that she was finally awake Nia could at least try to loosen those bonds that were strapped to her.

"Not... morning..." River forced the words slowly, her mouth struggling to catch up with her mind and blurs and stars danced in her blank eyes. She still didn't attempt to turn her head to look at the other girl; no, there were some very, curious spots on the ceiling that were asking the stars to dance.

"Dancing... It's... dancing. Always. Never... never morning."

What was dancing...?

Nia looked about the room again in case she missed something of importance, glancing all about with wide and curious eyes, only to find nothing that really stood out in the end. But her smile was quickly replaced with a frown when she became fully aware of her roommate's condition.

"Oh! Please do not speak. I would not want you to tire yourself," The girl replied tenderly, inching closer to the bed and reached forward to undo the straps. However, try as she might, no amount of tugging, pulling or twisting could loosen the bonds. Still, Nia tried so awfully hard and only gave up after she attempted to free each one.

"I'm sorry, but they will not budge."
