Day 30: Cafeteria, Breakfast

Hitsugaya woke with a start.

His entire body ached, but the pain was nowhere near as bad as it had been the night before. His injuries had been tended two with clean gauze and bandages, and he found every movement wasn't agony. He wasn't in the best of shape, but thanks to the miracle of landel's strange time distortion, he had mostly recovered from the vile poison without having to waste anyone else's talents.

And in his hand, still...there was the key.

He dressed quickly, sliding the key onto the key ring from his desk drawer and stuck it into his pocket. Whether the key stood to gain them anything or not, it stood as a vital reminder that they could succeed in this place. There was hope, as insignificant as it often seemed. They could beat this place.

That small shred of hope made getting up worth it.

The nurse who escorted him to breakfast was cheerful, and commented idly about how wonderful it was to see young Tommy Winters up and about again after his unfortunate run-in with a bad case of food poisoning. He smirked slightly, knowing that any lies the institute forced into their heads were only that: lies. He wouldn't buy it for a second. And on top of that, the concept of muffins sounded almost appetizing. While he still preferred his authentic Japanese cuisine, the food here was slowly becoming more and more bearable. He would have preferred a warm bowl of sweet nattou over rice over the mufffins, but they would do. The plain yogurt and fruit, on the other hand, was excellent. He piled his plate high with fruit as usual, and got several small bowls of yogurt as well.

Finding the most convenient table to the end of the food line, he took a seat and scanned for the new arrivals. New arrivals meant people who would be lost and confused. Renji did a good job of making a bulliten post last time...he should recommend abarai-fukutaicho do the same again this time.

[Waiting for Angel]

Ed jumped to one side as the nurse Fox was fighting fell, and then he quickly slipped around the man's side, aiming a kick at the legs of an orderly coming up behind the older man. If he could go for legs, knock them over and try to break or sprain as much as he could, he probably had a better chance than going for hand to hand.

The orderly fell and Ed took a moment to viciously stamp on the man's knee, feeling all of his suppressed anger from the last few days begin to boil over. How dare they take Al from him! How dare they use his mother like that! How dare they torture Adel and hurt Tamaki and take Fox's friend from him! They had to pay!

The run from his table to Edward's side seemed to take forever. The cafeteria was in chaos, with chairs being flung and nurses being attacked everywhere, and only his long strides kept Adelheid from being caught in the middle of it. As it was...

...he broke onto the scene by using one of his favored techniques, that of grabbing one of the orderlies and using momentum to carry him forward, pushing him over a table and to the floor before standing with Edward and Fox. There was really no way to win, but that didn't matter. Adelheid wasn't going to stand by and watch any longer. He did have to grin, though... this situation was just the sort of irresponsibility that his sister would have approved. "Ed, Fox; I should have known that you two would be in the middle of this."

"Try to break as much as you can," Fox said in German. It was better to injure enemy soldiers than it was to kill them in a drawn-out conflict. Injured people took more effort to care for, and the dead took none.

A nurse came at him with a needle at the same time an Orderly attacked. Fox chose to focus on the nurse, putting out both of his hands and using simple but effective technique to break wrist of the hand that held the needle with a quick series of loud pops.

The orderly grabbed onto some of bruised areas, and that hurt, but at least the needle was out of the way for now.

A wild laugh escaped Ed's lips when Adel came to join them, reaching them in an impressively flash style. "Where else would we be?" he replied breathlessly as he turned to make sure they could face most of the attackers between them.

He didn't understand what Fox was saying, but he could get the general idea by the way the other man acted. He gave the fallen orderly one last kick to the injured leg before turning his attention to the nurse approaching with a needle. He grabbed her wrist with his automail, squeezing the joint hard enought to make her drop the syringe and then pulled her arm taut so that he could aim his elbow savagely at the bone. She grabbed at him with her free hand, certain to leave bruises and bloody marks from her nails, but he wouldn't let that stop him!

Honestly... Adelheid had never been in a war zone, and he didn't like the idea of 'breaking' anything. Fighting was one thing, but Fox and Edward both fought as though they took some sort of savage glee out of the loud pops and snapping of bone. Adelheid had killed people before, but... only at the direst need. This wasn't any sort of honorable battle, now was it?

Instead of fighting to break bone, Adelheid fought more as a delaying tactic; trying to draw attention to himself so that the other two would be free to do the damage they were far more willing to indulge in. He ducked between orderlies, blocked the attempts of the nurses to sedate him... and it was then, that Adelheid realized something. His powers were completely gone. Completely. Against the Head Doctor he had managed to kick ki at him, but now he was completely powerless. Other than his own physical strength, of course, but that was neither here nor there.

"No powers, an endless supply of enemies who are stronger than we are... it'd be too much to ask for a quiet corner, I imagine."

"I think you'll get your quiet corner soon," Fox said. Adel didn't seem to want to do any real damage to the nurses, and Ed didn't seem to have the appropriate training for this kind of situation.

Fox decided that he would have to see to getting more training for Ed and talking to Adel about their situation.

He turned his attention to getting the orderly off him, each second he was preoccupied was a chance for a nurse to sedate him.

Who wanted a quiet corner when things were like this? He hadn't had a good brawl in ages and while he didn't want to kill anyone, and didn't like hurting them, they kind of deserved it and Ed never had any problems with getting into fights.

He managed to flip a nurse who was coming from him, sending her slamming to the floor and he suddenly felt a hot rush of gratitude for his sensei for what she'd taught him. Of course, if she'd been here, he'd have kicked his ass.

There were more of them turning up... More every second, it seemed like and one of the orderlies managed to grab Ed while his back was turned, hoisting the boy off the ground. Not that it stopped him and he started to bite and kick viciously, leaving bloody teethmarks on the orderly's arm that would definitely need some kind of treatment. But being held gave the nurse ample opportunity to jab the needle into his flesh arm and as much as he tried to struggle, still lashing out, the sedative slowly worked, making him flop in the hold the man had on him.

That was the problem with Ed and Fox both, it seemed. They were so focused on doing damage that they left themselves open, and Adelheid couldn't cover both of them. Not while he was busy fighting for himself, warding off attacks and trying to stay at least within kicking range of his friend.

But then he turned and saw Edward in an orderly's arms, sedated and still, and the thin veneer of control that Adelheid had kept over himself ever since that fateful operation was punctured. Just like the last time he'd fought against the Institute directly, the deific rage which roiled in his heart boiled to the surface, and even though the alarm announcement drowned out his roar of fury, nothing could hold him back. He charged right at the orderly holding Edward, catching the man by surprise and lashing out with a spinning kick, cracking the orderly's nose and sending him sprawling to the floor. How dare they sedate his friend? How dare the Head Doctor keep playing these twisted games with them!?

And yet, even though nothing could hold him back, one word interrupted Adelheid's rage. The Head Doctor talking about a... 'fail-safe.' Instantly, the German glanced around, his eyes wide and alert as he tried to keep track of what was going to happen. Last time, Adelheid had been the first to attack, and therefore, the first to feel his strength being sapped by the Head Doctor's strange powers... while he couldn't counter it, yet, he wanted at least to figure out how it worked. He could see through any technique, he could understand any power and replicate it immediately, surely he could eventually figure this out, couldn't he?

Unfortunately, whether he figured it out or not, he was still no match for the Head Doctor. Before one of the nurses stuck him, he had already collapsed to the ground, having lost once again despite the best he could do.
