Day 30: Cafeteria, Breakfast
Hitsugaya woke with a start.
His entire body ached, but the pain was nowhere near as bad as it had been the night before. His injuries had been tended two with clean gauze and bandages, and he found every movement wasn't agony. He wasn't in the best of shape, but thanks to the miracle of landel's strange time distortion, he had mostly recovered from the vile poison without having to waste anyone else's talents.
And in his hand, still...there was the key.
He dressed quickly, sliding the key onto the key ring from his desk drawer and stuck it into his pocket. Whether the key stood to gain them anything or not, it stood as a vital reminder that they could succeed in this place. There was hope, as insignificant as it often seemed. They could beat this place.
That small shred of hope made getting up worth it.
The nurse who escorted him to breakfast was cheerful, and commented idly about how wonderful it was to see young Tommy Winters up and about again after his unfortunate run-in with a bad case of food poisoning. He smirked slightly, knowing that any lies the institute forced into their heads were only that: lies. He wouldn't buy it for a second. And on top of that, the concept of muffins sounded almost appetizing. While he still preferred his authentic Japanese cuisine, the food here was slowly becoming more and more bearable. He would have preferred a warm bowl of sweet nattou over rice over the mufffins, but they would do. The plain yogurt and fruit, on the other hand, was excellent. He piled his plate high with fruit as usual, and got several small bowls of yogurt as well.
Finding the most convenient table to the end of the food line, he took a seat and scanned for the new arrivals. New arrivals meant people who would be lost and confused. Renji did a good job of making a bulliten post last time...he should recommend abarai-fukutaicho do the same again this time.

The man had a weird way of talking, Zoro decided. And, apparently, he had a few odd habits. Not that the pirate didn't know anyone who didn't.
Something about Sousuke's mannerisms struck Zoro as a little... military-like. Like the marines that were often after the Straw Hats; rigid, careful, controlled.
"Yeah, don't remember how, but I'm still breathing," Zoro shrugged, finishing off his muffin with a bite that would have shamed someone with a detachable jaw. Two bites, not bad. He looked at his second one and pondered over whether he, as a man, should finish it in one bite or two. "You look healthy enough too. Kinda tense, though."
He quirked an eyebrow in question, not the type to ask those kinds of questions out loud if he could help it. Finding out Sousuke's objective, then trying to figure out if he could help or not was on Zoro's agenda but that didn't mean he was going to go around asking why the other was bending spoons and looking... dejected.

The sergeant tilted his chin up and pointed to a spot on his neck. He didn't know this, but there wasn't anything there.
"Would you happen to know anything about a ghost-woman named Reika? When she touched me, I saw some of her history and this mark was left on me. Apparently she was a priestess...?"
He was fishing for answers now. He wanted to know if this mark was going to consume him, or worse, Miku. And where was Mousse? He hadn't seen the man enter the cafeteria yet. Well, he left him in a safe enough place last night, things should have worked out okay.

"Uh. Whatever mark you had, doesn't look like it's still there..." He confessed, still trying to find any indication that there had been something on Sousuke's neck. He bit into his muffin and shook his head. "Nope. Nothing."
And ghost-women? Er. That really sounded more like Usopp's thing. "Can't say I know much about ghost-women, though. Maybe one of my crewmates might know something. Two of them've been here longer than me."
Half-lidded eyes searched the cafeteria-- there was some fighting going on now but it wasn't his fight so what did he care?-- and he pointed out the two black haired boys conversing together. "Luffy and Usopp. The one with the Straw Hat's been here a couple of weeks already." And at that he frowned. His nakama were trapped; why was it taking them so long to find a way out?

He looked over at Luffy and Usopp and blinked, "Captain Usopp is my roommate. Are you one of the crewmen he spoke of?" The sergeant, of course, had no idea the can of worms he was about to open. He was still firmly convinced that Usopp had told him the truth.
The fight behind him, however, was disconcerting at best. Sousuke immediately scanned the cafeteria for signs of Miku, but he couldn't see her. If things progressed too far, he'd have to step in and find her.
And that could come with a needle... which was something Sousuke wasn't exactly fond of. Perhaps he could avoid it. For now, it was just a simple prison riot.

What idiot--Zoro resisted the urge to smack a hand to his face."Captain Usopp, huh..." He muttered lamely, looking vaguely uncomfortable. He didn't want to completely discredit his nakama but, at the same time, Zoro wasn't going to lie. "Depends which one he was talking about. One of his 80000 or one of Luffy's 8?" Smirking a little, the swordsman crossed his arms and looked at Sousuke, a touch of amusement in his body language, if not in his voice.
no subject
"I'm not sure," Sousuke admitted. "He said at one point that he commanded a great force, but later said he couldn't let his people down. And there aren't 80,000 people here, so maybe he was talking about Captain Luffy's 8?" The sergeant smiled slightly, "He is very devoted to his crew--a quality I greatly admire."
no subject
"I'm Luffy's swordsman." Zoro admitted, nodding a little in his captain's direction. "But let me tell you now, I don't think you'll ever get to meet any of Usopp's great force so don't get your hopes up."
He'd let Sousuke figure it out for himself. People never really believed the truth when he told it, anyway.

So Zoro was a swordsman. That much Sousuke could discern from the fight in the bathroom, but it was always good to have confirmation. And he was a crewman under Captain Luffy, which was another point of interest. He was slowly meeting everyone connected to Usopp--which, to his understanding, meant that he was 'branching out' and 'meeting new people through acquaintances'. That was good, right?
The fight was getting louder, and more nurses and orderlies were entering the cafeteria. Sousuke's soldier sense kicked right in, the hairs on his neck standing on end. A riot was dangerous for the people standing on the sidelines moreso than those fighting. Living in Afghanistan and Cambodia taught him that much.
He looked over at the fight, and his eyes widened. Miku was in close proximity to the riot, and therefore in a prime danger zone.
"Excuse me," Sousuke said, politely enough, then jumped over the table in Miku's direction.

He watched as the soldier's eyes grew wide and knew in an instant that he was going to be finishing up his breakfast alone.
Well, the other had chosen a weird way to get to where he had to go. He was heading for some girl in the distance, apparently. Zoro watched Sousuke carefully, noting that he was probably a strong fighter of some sort. Military background, probably; valued camaraderie.
Curiosity over Usopp's weird roommate easily sated through mere observation, Zoro silently continued with his meal. He finished up with a gulp of juice just in time as a shrill, painful noise suddenly filled the air.
The only thought he managed was that it kind of reminded him of Nami.
