Day 30: Cafeteria, Breakfast

Hitsugaya woke with a start.

His entire body ached, but the pain was nowhere near as bad as it had been the night before. His injuries had been tended two with clean gauze and bandages, and he found every movement wasn't agony. He wasn't in the best of shape, but thanks to the miracle of landel's strange time distortion, he had mostly recovered from the vile poison without having to waste anyone else's talents.

And in his hand, still...there was the key.

He dressed quickly, sliding the key onto the key ring from his desk drawer and stuck it into his pocket. Whether the key stood to gain them anything or not, it stood as a vital reminder that they could succeed in this place. There was hope, as insignificant as it often seemed. They could beat this place.

That small shred of hope made getting up worth it.

The nurse who escorted him to breakfast was cheerful, and commented idly about how wonderful it was to see young Tommy Winters up and about again after his unfortunate run-in with a bad case of food poisoning. He smirked slightly, knowing that any lies the institute forced into their heads were only that: lies. He wouldn't buy it for a second. And on top of that, the concept of muffins sounded almost appetizing. While he still preferred his authentic Japanese cuisine, the food here was slowly becoming more and more bearable. He would have preferred a warm bowl of sweet nattou over rice over the mufffins, but they would do. The plain yogurt and fruit, on the other hand, was excellent. He piled his plate high with fruit as usual, and got several small bowls of yogurt as well.

Finding the most convenient table to the end of the food line, he took a seat and scanned for the new arrivals. New arrivals meant people who would be lost and confused. Renji did a good job of making a bulliten post last time...he should recommend abarai-fukutaicho do the same again this time.

The corner of Rukia's mouth turned up a little. "Well, any of the people I pointed out before are all trustworthy. From what I've found, most of the people here are pretty decent." She shrugged. "You seem like a smart kid; I'm sure you can figure it out."

Rukia was a little disappointed that he didn't comment on her drawing skill, but maybe there were a lot of great artists where he came from. She nodded sagely. "Yeah; this certainly isn't all of them, either."

She sighed, giving her breakfast tray a dirty look. She had no appetite, and kind of wanted to fling the tray at someone. But there was no sense in taking out her frustrations on food, or Tyler, so she said the first thing she could think of. "What is your world like?"

[identity profile] shyboyblue.livejournal.com 2008-02-12 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
He grinned at her compliment; at least, he hoped it was a compliment. "I'll remember. And I'll be careful, thanks."

At her question, he looked perplexed for a moment. How did one describe a world, when you weren't even sure the other person would know what he was talking about. "Uhh. Do you know where America is? Or don't you have that in your world?"

This was decidedly odd.

[identity profile] haiiro-no-chou.livejournal.com 2008-02-12 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
Rukia nodded. "Yes, though I've never been there. Quite a large number of the prisoners here seem to be from Japan, myself included. Though we're from all different times. What year is it-- was it, for you?"

The idea of different worlds was odd to Rukia, but not unbelievable, The thought of people coming from different times was almost too much for her to warp her head around at times.

[identity profile] shyboyblue.livejournal.com 2008-02-12 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Tyler blinked at that question. "Uhh. It was fall of 2006..." he replied, looking a bit dubious at being asked that. How weird would it be to meet someone from his future? Or the far past, for that matter. "I've never been to Japan, although it always sounded like a pretty neat place to visit. I'm from Massachusetts, in the states. What year are you from?"

[identity profile] haiiro-no-chou.livejournal.com 2008-02-12 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, I'm from the same time," Rukia said, surprised. "Though some of my... friends are from weeks or months earlier."

"Massachu..." She shook her head. "It doesn't really sound familiar, but I don't really keep up on current events." It wasn't that Rukia was avoiding the truth; it was simply very awkward telling someone, I died before your grandparents were born.

[identity profile] shyboyblue.livejournal.com 2008-02-12 12:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Tyler shot her a crooked grin. "It's okay, there's a lot of states, after all. I don't think Massachusetts is actually that popular of one, anyway." Unless you studied all the witch lore, of course. Or were a Lovecraft fan.

At her comment about when her friends were from, he looked slightly surprised. "You mean you're all here, but brought from different times? How is that possible? If they'd been brought from before you, wouldn't you have noticed they were gone?"

[identity profile] haiiro-no-chou.livejournal.com 2008-02-12 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"I know it doesn't make any sense," she sighed. "But they were still there. Renji, for example. I remember being with him back where we're from, after what he last remembers before coming here. It's like... there's more than one of every person, or..."

She shook her head, eyes lost in thought. "Well, someone left a note on the bulletin board, asking if anyone thought that this might all be... I don't know, some kind of dream, or just part of someone else's imagination." She shrugged. "It doesn't really matter, in any case. We still need to get out of here." And bring vengeance down upon those who have hurt us.

[identity profile] shyboyblue.livejournal.com 2008-02-12 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's almost as if they stopped everyone's time, and then chose people from various places in it, if it's like what you say," Tyler mused, wondering how such a thing was possible. He'd done a lot of strange things in his life, but nothing that come close to that. Then again, he had yet to ascend, and who knew what one could be capable of then?

[identity profile] haiiro-no-chou.livejournal.com 2008-02-12 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Rukia made a thoughtful noise. "Hm, yeah, like plucking buds from the branches of a tree... Except, the buds are still there to grow into leaves when times starts again?" She chuckled quietly. "This stuff makes my head hurt."

She was surprised that Tyler was taking this all so well. Many of the people here seemed to be baffled by the idea of different worlds, kidou, and beings like shinigami. Rukia tilted her head to one side, considering the young man before her. "You seem to be taking this all in stride. I take it that magic is common knowledge in your world?"

[identity profile] shyboyblue.livejournal.com 2008-02-12 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Tyler's eyes went wide in surprise and he glanced at her. "Magic? Uh, no," he replied quickly. Maybe too quickly. "It's just fairy tale stories and stuff. That doesn't really exist."

Then he realized he was acting silly and brushed fingers through his hair and gave a sheepish laugh. "I just watch and play and read a lot of science fiction, I guess?"

[identity profile] haiiro-no-chou.livejournal.com 2008-02-12 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Rukia arched an eyebrow. "...Well, it's not a fair tale here. At least, that's what some people call it. Where I'm from there's nothing magical about it. It's just something that some can do, and others can't." The vast majority of living souls didn't have the power to perceive spirits, let alone use kidou. There was a greater number of those among the dead, though, who had significant spiritual power. Most of them became shinigami, like Rukia and Renji had done after their friends were all gone.

It took her a moment to remember what science fiction was. She had only been in the human world for a few months, so many modern terms were unfamiliar. "Are you a, uhh..." She paused, trying to remember the word. "A nerd?" That's what some of the students at Kurakara High had called people who liked to read a lot, or watched 'science fiction' stories.

[identity profile] shyboyblue.livejournal.com 2008-02-12 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Tyler had to laugh at that. "Yeah, I guess you could say that, although most of us prefer the word geek," he replied, an amused look flitting across his face. "It doesn't sound so... nerdy. I'm not as bad as some people are. I just like playing video games and stuff. Usually when I'm procrastinating homework."

Which reminded him...

"Hey, can I ask you something? If people are brought here from all different times and places and stuff... are there things brought here at night, as monsters?"

He remembered all too clearly the person he'd seen last night in what he'd thought at the time had been a strange but realistic costume from a video game. If the people who ran this place were as crazy as she said, where were they getting the ideas for whatever monsters guarded this place at night? Although the idea that they were pulling out video game villains to go on a rampage after dark was ridiculous. Very cool and wishful thinking, but ridiculous.

[identity profile] haiiro-no-chou.livejournal.com 2008-02-12 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm not entirely sure," she replied. "I haven't seen any creatures from my own world, but I've read some things on the bulletin board about people running into monsters they were familiar with..."

Rukia was silent for a while, trying to recall what she had read. There was the child that Captain Jack knew about, and she thought there had been something about the dark, shrouded creature in the M-U hallway a few nights ago... Plus, only this morning, she had seen the post asking about painful tattoos, like the ones Allen had mentioned.

Finally, she nodded. "Yes, it seems your guess is accurate. I can think of three... well, non-patients, who have played the part of enemy both here and in someone else's world."

[identity profile] shyboyblue.livejournal.com 2008-02-12 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
"Can you tell me which ones?" Tyler asked curiously, wondering what villains from different worlds might have shown up here, and how that was even possible. "Or describe them? Or something?"

[identity profile] haiiro-no-chou.livejournal.com 2008-02-12 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
She indicated the entry about the mask-wearing boy (http://community.livejournal.com/damned_bulletin/70476.html?thread=3532876#t3532876) again. "This child. I ran into him, myself, and he doesn't... seem like a monster. Captain Harkness' explanation was difficult to follow, but it's best to avoid the boy, if you run into him." Rukia felt terrible for the child, even if he had injured her. He had only wanted his mother, after all.

She pointed to another entry (http://community.livejournal.com/damned_bulletin/70476.html?thread=3518028#t3518028) about a dark, cloaked creature. "This is another one I've run across. It made everything feel... hopeless, I guess. And the others couldn't hit it with their weapons until I trapped it with a binding spell."

"The last one I know of," she said, "isn't on this list. All I know is that she's ghost-like, and when she touches you, painful tattoos appear on your skin. With the tattoos come... bad memories? I'm not really sure." Allen hadn't been very forthcoming with information on the creature, and his recent posts weren't much more detailed.

[identity profile] shyboyblue.livejournal.com 2008-02-12 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
The first one didn't look familiar to him at all. The second... That looked like a dementor, or a ring wraith, or something similar, although that was again bordering on ridiculous. At least it gave him a reference to compare it to. As for the girl who created tattoos... that sounded vaguely familiar, too, like he should know that, but he couldn't place it at the moment.

"Yeah, it sounds like wandering in this place alone at night isn't the smartest thing to do," he agreed.

[identity profile] haiiro-no-chou.livejournal.com 2008-02-12 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Rukia grimaced, unintentionally looking down at her legs. "No, it's not," she agreed. "If you want to make sure you have someone to stay with tonight, you should speak with Captain Hitsugaya - the one with the white hair - or Colonel Mustang." She indicated him as well. "They're both in charge of assigning groups for gathering supplies, making weapons, and exploring more of this place. They're also both very busy, though, so the bulletin board might be the best way to get in touch with them."

Rukia hated to admit it, but if she wasn't in much better shape come nightfall, she probably wouldn't be doing much of anything. Not that she'd gotten anything productive accomplished lately...

[identity profile] shyboyblue.livejournal.com 2008-02-12 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Tyler nodded. "Thanks, maybe I'll do that," he agreed. "Where can I find this bulletin board? I'll check there, too."

Hopefully, maybe he could find out some useful information. He wasn't sure about traveling in a group - he wasn't sure how much use he would be, since he couldn't Use in front of others, but he wasn't entirely certain he wanted to venture out alone, either.

[identity profile] haiiro-no-chou.livejournal.com 2008-02-13 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
"If you go back out those doors, it's on the wall to the left," she explained, pointing toward the sun room.

Of course, not everyone was involved with the Art & Crafts and Cooking Clubs. Even if that might be the most secure option for Tyler, Rukia felt that she shouldn't bias him. "There are other people you can work with, too. Just, if you go through Captain Hitsugaya, you're very likely to be teamed up with someone both trustworthy and more experienced than yourself."

Speaking of which. "Can you fight?" she asked, seemingly out of the blue.

[identity profile] shyboyblue.livejournal.com 2008-02-13 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
"Self defense," Tyler answered evasively, looking towards the door she'd indicated. "I trained in some martial arts styles ever since I was a kid."

Not to mention he had other abilities that those had helped aid, but he couldn't tell her about those.

[identity profile] haiiro-no-chou.livejournal.com 2008-02-13 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, what martial art?" she asked, truly interested. From what she had seen of the arts practiced in the mortal world, some of them were similar to what was taught at the Academy in Soul Society.

[identity profile] shyboyblue.livejournal.com 2008-02-13 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
"I studied Jujitsu and a little Aikido," Tyler admitted sheepishly, flushing a bit at her interest. "I was never very good with weapons, so they fit me a little better."

Rukia opened her mouth to answer, when she was distracted by a meaty thump. She looked across the cafeteria, toward the sound, and there was River, moving faster than any human had a right to. She had already dropped one nurse, but was quickly being swarmed.

It all happened so fast. Two dark-haired men rushed to River's side to argue with the nurses and orderlies for only a moment before exploding into action. All around, others moved to go to River's aid, or simply to take out their frustrations on their captors.

Any other day, Rukia might have stayed out of the fighting. It probably wouldn't do any good; there always seemed to be an endless supply of staff to quell any disturbances. But she was fed up. Fed up with this place, with the people who were trying to control them, and with herself for being so weak and ineffective. She didn't care that she could barely walk, or that she would likely get sedated. She just wanted to fight back.

An orderly on his way to the heart of the chaos ran by Rukia and Tyler. Without so much as blinking, Rukia reached forward to pick up her tray and hurled it at the man as hard as she could. She was wounded and exhausted, but maybe there was something in the air; her anger had overwhelmed the signals from her body.

Rukia's cup of tea slid off the tray before it even reached the orderly, but the hot liquid splashed his pant leg. He cried out in surprise, and then came the tray, connecting with his shoulder in a shower of fruit and cereal.

Before the man could wipe the milk from his eyes, Rukia was out of her wheelchair and on the table, where she was only slightly taller than him. Her legs weren't much good - she would be paying for all this movement later - so she braced herself and punched him in the side of the head.

[identity profile] shyboyblue.livejournal.com 2008-02-13 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Everything went from moderate calm to madness in the blink of an eye, and Tyler only had a few seconds to stare in shock, his jaw dropping, as fights broke out all over the cafeteria. He didn't even know what had started it, other than a scuffle across the room, which seemed to trigger one everywhere else. Had this been planned, or were the other patients just taking advantage of an opportunity?

Still, when his quiet companion flung a tray at a passing orderly and then hopped from her wheelchair onto the table to fight him, Tyler knew he couldn't just sit and watch.

Leaping to his feet, he took advantage of the fact that the man was facing Rukia to deliver a kick to the back of the man's legs to take them out from underneath him, even as he brought his own tray down hard across the back of the man's head.

[identity profile] haiiro-no-chou.livejournal.com 2008-02-13 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
The poor man took the punch with a grunt, bringing one hand up to shield his face. Rukia couldn't avoid his other hand, though, which came around to grab her arm. Before the orderly could pull her down from the table, though, Tyler was behind him. As the orderly fell backward, he started to bring Rukia with him, but the tray Tyler delivered to his head loosened the man's grip enough that Rukia was able to stay on the table.

There were even more fights breaking out all around. One man was up on a table, yelling for others to join in, and a pretty girl Rukia had never seen before was singing. Rukia didn't know the words, but she felt the power in them.

A nurse, syringe already in hand, was heading for Rukia, and another orderly had appeared behind Tyler. "Tyler, behind you!" Rukia yelled as she assessed her options. She thought to go back over to the other side of the table, but there were more staff members in that direction. Deciding that she was better off with one nurse, Rukia took a chance and jumped off the table, right into the woman.
