Day 30: Cafeteria, Breakfast

Hitsugaya woke with a start.

His entire body ached, but the pain was nowhere near as bad as it had been the night before. His injuries had been tended two with clean gauze and bandages, and he found every movement wasn't agony. He wasn't in the best of shape, but thanks to the miracle of landel's strange time distortion, he had mostly recovered from the vile poison without having to waste anyone else's talents.

And in his hand, still...there was the key.

He dressed quickly, sliding the key onto the key ring from his desk drawer and stuck it into his pocket. Whether the key stood to gain them anything or not, it stood as a vital reminder that they could succeed in this place. There was hope, as insignificant as it often seemed. They could beat this place.

That small shred of hope made getting up worth it.

The nurse who escorted him to breakfast was cheerful, and commented idly about how wonderful it was to see young Tommy Winters up and about again after his unfortunate run-in with a bad case of food poisoning. He smirked slightly, knowing that any lies the institute forced into their heads were only that: lies. He wouldn't buy it for a second. And on top of that, the concept of muffins sounded almost appetizing. While he still preferred his authentic Japanese cuisine, the food here was slowly becoming more and more bearable. He would have preferred a warm bowl of sweet nattou over rice over the mufffins, but they would do. The plain yogurt and fruit, on the other hand, was excellent. He piled his plate high with fruit as usual, and got several small bowls of yogurt as well.

Finding the most convenient table to the end of the food line, he took a seat and scanned for the new arrivals. New arrivals meant people who would be lost and confused. Renji did a good job of making a bulliten post last time...he should recommend abarai-fukutaicho do the same again this time.

[Hi there~!]

Hermione considered the man before her at the moment. He didn't fit the "typical" definition of crazy at first glance, but she knew there could be various other problems with his mental state. Nevertheless, there was heavy security, and she doubted the staff here (whatever was going on with them, in any case) would allow the patients to be hurt.

Forcing a small smile, she responded, "No, not at all." At the very least, maybe she could get some straight answers.

Kenren grinned and set his tray down before sitting down comfortably, or as comfortably as it was possible to get in the cafeteria seats anyway. He glanced around the room for a moment, checking that his people were here too and still half expecting Hakkai to turn up so Kenren could get on his case about disappearing. It would be nice if that were the case.

He turned his attention back to the girl and nodded politely. "I'm Kenren. I haven't seen you around before. You new?" There had been mentions of new people arriving and she seemed a little bemused.

"Yes, I suppose, but I'm not even sure how I got here," Hermione said, still anxious. The pain in her chest was dull, but her stomach was turning and she wanted to find her friends as soon as possible.

"I'm Hermione. Hermione Granger, but they seem to think I'm someone else," she added. "I'm not even quite sure where I am..."

She trailed off a bit, looking to Kenren. He didn't seem any less sane than she did, in fact, he seemed rather pleasant. Still, that didn't mean she could simply trust everything he said, and Hermione would have to determine herself whether he had any information of value.

Great, so that meant that she was clueless and hadn't even seen what happened during the night to make her realise that this place was screwing with them even more than they made out. Ah well, couldn't be helped.

"Kenren, Kenren Taisho," he said by way of introduction. "And they tell everyone that they're someone else. He leaned back in his seat, idly taking a bite out of a muffin. "They'll tell you that your name is different, that your life as you remember it and any powers or magic that you have are all a delusion. And no-one is quite sure how they got here either." He shrugged and gave a lopsided grin. "It's a real pain if you ask me." More than a pain, but it had been an amusing diversion until they'd taken Hakkai and screwed with Tenpou.

"As for the details. It's called Landel's Institute and it claims to be a mental hospital."

Hermione considered him for a moment. She's already gotten through that part; those weren't the details she wanted to know. "What about the how and why? This is an awfully elaborate ruse for a prison, and it would take considerable time and effort to create such a place. There would have been...people aware of this," she said, trying to rationalize it all. Dumbledore let nothing slip past his nose - a prison like this, that captured wizards, surely couldn't have slipped under his radar.

"Exactly why were we all brought here?" she asked. If anything, she should have been taken away by Death Eaters, or arrested by the Ministry Officials for trespassing. To be brought to a place like this made no sense.

"Well, no-one knows how although there's a lot of theories and as for the why, also a lot of theories but I tend to go with the guy in charge is a sadistic jerk who likes screwing with people." He shrugged apologetically. "There's talk about this being some kind of test of the people brought here and their abilities, attempts to break us to make some kind of army. Lots of things." He shrugged and took a few more bites of muffin. "The whole daytime thing is a charade, probably to try to make us doubt ourselves or get us to fall into a routine." She seemed like she could handle the information at least. "Nighttime, you'll find, is rather different."

"As for people noticing... you might find people you know here maybe, but a lot of people come from very different places, and the same can be said about this whole place."
