Day 30: Cafeteria, Breakfast

Hitsugaya woke with a start.

His entire body ached, but the pain was nowhere near as bad as it had been the night before. His injuries had been tended two with clean gauze and bandages, and he found every movement wasn't agony. He wasn't in the best of shape, but thanks to the miracle of landel's strange time distortion, he had mostly recovered from the vile poison without having to waste anyone else's talents.

And in his hand, still...there was the key.

He dressed quickly, sliding the key onto the key ring from his desk drawer and stuck it into his pocket. Whether the key stood to gain them anything or not, it stood as a vital reminder that they could succeed in this place. There was hope, as insignificant as it often seemed. They could beat this place.

That small shred of hope made getting up worth it.

The nurse who escorted him to breakfast was cheerful, and commented idly about how wonderful it was to see young Tommy Winters up and about again after his unfortunate run-in with a bad case of food poisoning. He smirked slightly, knowing that any lies the institute forced into their heads were only that: lies. He wouldn't buy it for a second. And on top of that, the concept of muffins sounded almost appetizing. While he still preferred his authentic Japanese cuisine, the food here was slowly becoming more and more bearable. He would have preferred a warm bowl of sweet nattou over rice over the mufffins, but they would do. The plain yogurt and fruit, on the other hand, was excellent. He piled his plate high with fruit as usual, and got several small bowls of yogurt as well.

Finding the most convenient table to the end of the food line, he took a seat and scanned for the new arrivals. New arrivals meant people who would be lost and confused. Renji did a good job of making a bulliten post last time...he should recommend abarai-fukutaicho do the same again this time.

The appearance of two people nearby shook Frey out of his daze, at least somewhat. Though his smile was strained, he did make the effort to be polite, greeting each of the men in turn. "Good morning. My name is Freyjadour." He left out his family name for the time being, until he had a better idea of how it would be received here.

The darker-haired one reminded him of Hazuki in some ways, the shape of his face perhaps, or the way he wore his hair. He seemed less intense than Hazuki though, which was a blessing. The other seemed northern, maybe, but Frey's knowledge of the northern countries was largely limited to Cathari, and maybe Lucretia.

Oriya glanced up at the greeting, pushing back his physical discomfort long enough to nod in return. "I am Mibu Oriya, it is a pleasure to meet you."

The nurse seemed to have been timing it, for right as he finished speaking the woman approached carrying a tray with a sickly sweet aroma. The swordsman paled somewhat, his stomach roiling. This was truly the last thing he needed, he was going to be ill--yet he refused to let go of the last shred of dignity that remained. He was not going to allow himself to appear weak, even if it wasn't all entirely possible.

“I’m Siegfried Schtauffen.”

Oriya wasn’t the only one who caught the scent from the breakfast tray. Siegfried did too, and whilst it didn’t have quite the same effect on the blond, he was glad he’d avoided the cinnamon rolls and muffins. How could people eat food like that for breakfast?

"Pleased to meet you both." Frey left his questionable breakfast alone for the time being, more concerned with finding out just what had happened to him and why he was in this place. The woman hadn't been very helpful, and neither of these two men seemed particularly friendly so Frey was hesitant to speak up again, but he couldn't just sit there in ignorance forever, either.

If Lyon was here... but Lyon was dead, and Frey had to accept that. Unconsciously clenching one hand into a fist, Frey closed his eyes for a moment. Lyon. He was on his own now, and would have to act accordingly. Somehow. Opening his eyes again, Frey steeled his resolve and spoke, "Pardon, but does either of you happen to know where this place is...? I'm not quite sure I understand how I came to be here."

Pushing away his tray, Oriya managed to subdue the urge to rest his head and instead sent the boy a glance. He must have just arrived, if his confusion was anything to go by. Sadly, Oriya was just as in the dark as this newcomer and the swordsman had a feeling he would only make this boy's confusion that much worse.

"All I can tell you is that this place is called Landel's Institute, but beyond that even I am a bit lost."

So, Freyjadour was a new patient too? He was lucky to have arrived during the dayshift and at least be forewarned.

“I don’t believe that anyone knows exactly what this place is, except that the ‘hospital’ is a façade.” No hospital he knew of let loose monsters amongst the patients.

“Have you been told of what goes on during the night?”

"It's not really a hospital?" While Frey had certainly realised right away that something was amiss, and his brief conversations on the bulletin board had confirmed as much, but there were so many injured people around that he hadn't exactly questioned that this was, at least, a hospital.

"I've been told that this is not my... world... but that's all, really." He'd quickly gotten distracted by the mention of the Sun Rune and the prospect of meeting someone who at least knew where Falena was, and what had happened there. It wasn't as good as finding one of his friends or even just someone he knew from the war, but it was something. "What goes on at night?"

While Oriya knew vaguely of what occurred in the dark in the labyrinth of halls, the swordsman would have felt it rude to intrude on the other man's conversation with this boy. That, and the other man felt as if he knew just what went on under the Head Doctor's watchful eyes, so Oriya remained silent.

Yet before Siegfried could say a word, the cafeteria went mad. Patients lunged from their seats with every intention to attack the nearby nurses. It was as if a switch had been thrown, from relative peace to absolute chaos.

The swordsman was unsure of the cause, but it was obvious this would not go over well.
