Night 29: Main Hallway 2-East

[From here.]

William continued on out of the stairwell before looking around the area that they had passed through several nights before. Nothing had changed, it appeared, though that meant little in this place. William grinned and glanced over his shoulder at Wesker as he began walking.

"I am curious," he started, careful to keep his voice lowered. "Just how long do you think it would take for a man's will to break if an outside influence constantly causes his hopes to rise and fall?"

"I see." He didn't, really, though it sounded like a bizarre crossbreed of the Arilou and the Umgah's attitudes-- heavy on the Umgah side. Still, he kept pace with the man, growing steadier on his feet as they moved.

At the warning, Zelnick pulled his hand away from his shoulder and looked at it. "The scratches aren't deep," he commented, "and I think they're already scabbing over." There was some blood on his fingers, but only a little, and it was already drying. "Still... I'll try to be careful."

As they stood still, Zelnick realized that he'd forgotten something very important in the fight with the rats (though it hadn't really been much of one, the way Yuber killed them off); introductions. "What's your name? I'm Captain Zelnick, of the New Alliance of Free Stars." Mindful of the warnings about worse monsters, he kept his voice quiet, but he was genuinely curious.

’New Alliance?’He thought. That introduction had instantly caught the knight’s attention, and he pivoted one foot around as he turned to face this Captain Zelnick. His mismatched gaze narrowed in suspicion as he regarded the other, and he wondered if it was more prudent to end this one now before anything further could happen.

Those who created such alliances back in his realm were those foolishly following Order and caused far more trouble for him than anything else. There definitely was a lack of Chaos within this one, which meant that they were more likely agents of Order. “Does that make you captain of a vessel or over guards or soldiers?”

Zelnick took a surprised step back at the suddenness of Yuber's movements caused, and took a moment to think before responding.

"Both? I piloted the flagship of our fleet, and Commander Hayes pretty much handed control over to me in regards to the New Alliance... It wasn't a very organized alliance, though, I spent a lot of time just trying to convince different species to help out." He frowned. "The last thing I remember before waking up here is destroying the Sa-matra with the Vindicator. I'm not sure I can still be a captain without my ship."

He sighed, melancholy; he had loved that starship, and wished there could have been some way to stop the Ur-Quan's war without giving up his Vindicator. Still, one ship (no matter how big and death-dealing and Precursor-designed and his) was less of a sacrifice than all sentient life in their corner of the galaxy.

"You still haven't told me your name," he pointed out, perhaps a bit rudely.

His eyes narrowed at that information, and he found himself distinctly displeased by it. This was sounding far too much like what had happened numerous times in the past, and if this had been the Suikoden realm, the Black Knight wouldn’t have hesitated in taking this one’s life. As it was this wasn’t the Suikoden realm, and while he would have gained some satisfaction in disposing of this one, they could come in handy later down the tract if he found himself in a situation where his position might be overwhelmed.

“No I haven’t.” Yuber murmured with a touch of amusement hinting in his voice. Turning his attention back towards the corridor, he offered “Yuber” offhandedly before heading down the next hallway.

They kept on moving through the empty hallways; Zelnick noticed that his bag seemed to be getting heavier. Starship captains led a somewhat inactive life, he supposed...
