Day 29: Courtyard

Though he hadn't been able to stomach much of the cafeteria food, as the day went on, he did feel marginally better.  The fever seemed to have broken and he'd held down what little he'd eaten.  It made him a little anxious, to sit around so much, and even if it was difficult, a walk outside sounded like a nice break from the usual.  He had no interest in the visitors.  Likely as not they were the same as the creature he'd run into a couple nights ago in the form of Aizen Sousuke.

He folded his thin arms across his chest as he started his walk around the courtyard.  The air was crisp, getting colder by the day it seemed, but it didn't dissuade him from taking a leisurely walk while he gathered his thoughts.

The courtyard looked vastly different during the day than it did at night, but that was true for the rest of the institute as well.

Statesman looked up at the sky, while flight wasn't among the most powerful of his abilities he had always enjoyed flying. It was soothing, and always helped him calm down and relieved the stress that came along with his job.

Instead he decided to walk it off, though he was distracted by the sight of a small boy with a mechanical arm. Marcus stopped next to the bench and looked down at him for a moment, the kid seemed to be asleep.

Well, he had been heading off towards sleep quite pleasantly, but then he felt the shadow fall across him. He'd been sitting with the sun on his face so the loss of it was obvious, even dozing as he was.

He opened one eye and glowered darkly up at the (very very big) man. What was this? Was he some kind of curiosity to be gawped at while he slept? He quickly covered up his automail, wishing that he could wear his gloves here, but he thought the nurses might start to wonder where he'd got them.

"What?" He growled, opening his other eye. Someone else wanting a weapon most likely. Ed wanted to help, but he also wanted to get something more active done at night.

"I was looking at your arm, it looks to be well made," Statesman offered, noting that the kid appeared to be self conscious about it.

Marcus frowned down at the glowering kid. Didn't they teach children to respect their elders anymore?

Hmph. Ed narrowed his eyes suspiciously at the man. Just interested in the automail, huh? Ed couldn't help but be suspicious. "Of course it's well made," he grumbled. "My mechanic is the best!" He said it with a touch of pride in his voice. Winry might have been annoying and scary at times, but she was damn good at what she did and he was proud of her!

"I don't see many people your age with mechanical limbs. Most of the ones I see are a lot bigger and heavier," They always wanted more features and more capabilities added into the mechanical limbs. Some that he had seen were so incredibly disproportionate they had been comical to look at.

The arm didn't seem very high-tech, but Statesman really wasn't a good person to judge that kind of machinery.

Most people his age hadn't given up their arm and leg for impossible alchemy either. Ed was just not a normal person of his age. He shrugged dismissively, probably an insolent gesture but what did he care? "I said it was the best. She made it lighter to make my movements easier." It had meant he had to be a little more careful admittedly, but it was still holding up damn well.

"Is it mechanical or does it have computer parts in it?" He had never been as interested in technology as Stefan had been, but Statesman couldn't deny how useful it was.

The emergency teleport system in particular was a real life saver, but he had known lots of people who had lost limbs in the world wars. A lot of them had died to infection in the first, but even since then a lot of soldiers had lost limbs, and good replacements had only come around recently.

He was used to people being interested in the automail, but mot of them didn't ask so many questions!! Ed's scowl deepend. "What's a computer?" he asked, unable to keep from being a little curious. It must be one of those things like the flying machines in the other world. Things that were from the future or just didn't exist in his world.

"It's mechanical. It's attached to the nerves in my arm so it can move." And maybe he should have eaten more at lunch. He was getting peckish again.

"...Computers are hard to explain," Statesman said after a moment. He doubted he could do it without a computer to demonstrate.

They didn't have computers but they still managed to create mechanical arms that tied into a persons nerves? Well, there were all kinds of strange places in the different dimensions, he was sure.

"Well that doesn't help," Ed grumbled, giving the man an annoyed look. He could at least give an explanation in return for the questions. He did remember that a few of the science-fiction books he'd read in the library last time had had computers mentioned in them, but they'd not been explained with any accuracy, like they just assumed that everyone under stood what was being talked about. How frustrating.

"You'd have to ask my mechanic for more information, but she isn't here," thankfully. "It's just a teachnology that's a mixture of mechanics and alchemy."
