Day 29: Cafeteria, Brunch

Hitsugaya left the chapel no less frustrated than before. The head doctor once again had chosen not to hide his face, yet promised he would be making an appearance at some time in the near future. He didn't like being patient, but there wasn't much choice. Either the head doctor would show his face, or he wouldn't. Renji had already seen him, and knew how to find him. That was enough.

The thought of eating made him slightly nauseous as usual, but he knew he needed to get his strength up. He could either be weak and try to force his way through brunch without eating anything, or he could be smart and actually give himself something to eat. And there was rice. Rice and fruit. He took a heaping pile of rice, and grabbed as much watermelon as he could fit on his plate, then proceeded to an empty table. He scanned the room, watching for Momo. He wasn't exactly looking forward to their conversation, knowing how she'd acted yesterday; however, he knew he had to speak to her, and there was a good chance that she would show more restraint now that the drugs were out of her system.

Thoughtfully he consumed his rice and waited.

That Colonel sure knew how to use people, Anise thought to herself. But he had given her an objective to work on, and that had taken her mind off of home for the time being, putting her back into relatively high spirits. So she just had to get the dirt on some of the institute's factions? Easy! There was information about them all over the bulletin board, so finding someone who knew the details had to be a simple task. From the looks of it, they seemed pretty open about accepting new members, too. Cute little Anise could slip right into one of their groups!

After another trip to the bulletin board to thoroughly read the posts she had been skimming previously, Anise made her way to the cafeteria. Having a mission was great and all, but right now she was starving! The coupons she'd been given for Doyleton went unused, and the meals they served on the buses were hardly "meals" at all. Filling a tray with salad and a hamburger - while not the classiest meal, beef was sounding really good at the time - she found an empty seat and took it.

Glancing around, she tried to find people matching the descriptions given on the board. A man with tattoos and a white-haired kid... Anyone that appeared to fit those descriptions were already occupied. But, oh well! She could worry about them and their groups after eating.

Food sounded quite good to Citan. He was surprised at how rapidly his wounds were healing, even without helping them along some. Oh, he had enough Arcane to do so, but he wasn't foolish enough to use it.

Heaping fruits and vegetables onto his tray, he noticed the young woman he'd accompanied about town the day before. Smiling in his absent and bemused manner, he ambled over.

"May I join you?"

Anise looked up at the man who approached her and grinned. "Doctor!" she greeted. "Of course! It'd make me happy." Not who she was hoping to run into, but a welcome sight nonetheless. After all, nothing could brighten a girl's day like the company of a good man with a fat wallet!

He seemed like a pretty knowledgeable guy, besides. Maybe she could get him to share some good information.

"Thank you." He took a seat and nodded in a friendly manner to her. "Last night was certainly chaotic! My word, I can't imagine anyone predicted that would happen! I'm very glad to see you're alright. From what I've heard there were a great many grave injuries...."

And perhaps a handful of casualties. But Citan hadn't been able to confirm or deny anything in that area.

"No kidding! I couldn't believe what happened." Did that kind of transformation happen to the nurses every night? It was scary to think about it. "It was a total mess! I stopped by the clinic, and they were packed." And there was that Leon guy... Anise had no idea what had gotten him, but whatever it was, it got him bad.

She brightened. "But it looks like you got through it okay, too!"

"Yes, I managed fine. Though in all the confusion, I am surprised." And off of the bus, he'd been un-bothered. Perhaps there was some truth to those rumors flitting about regarding the avian monster's choice in prey.

"Ah yes, the clinic. I hear they do a rather good job."

It didn't come as a surprise that the doctor had gotten through the night unscathed. From the beginning, he seemed like the kind of man who could take care of himself.

Anise nodded at his comment. Having seen one of the clinic's healers in action, she too could vouch for their effectiveness. It was too bad she hadn't known about them - or had the chance to go even if she had known - on her first night.

Now seemed like a good time to move on to the topic that had been on her mind, so after picking at her salad a bit, Anise spoke again. If he could answer any of her questions, it would save a lot of time. "Say, Doctor. Do you know anything about those clubs on the bulletin board?" She paused to take another bite, then elaborated a bit on the question. "Like, what they actually do, and stuff." At the very least, it was obvious they weren't making food and art every night.

"Oh, I know a bit," Citan admitted, nodding. "There's three of them, I believe. One of them seems committed to mapping and exploring, one of them seems to focus on weapons and equipment and one on medical aide. At least that's my understanding. It's nice to see some organization here."

It was all too easy to descend into chaos when placed in a chaotic situation. But small pockets had emerged. Citan was curious to see when power struggles would begin. It was only a matter of time - such was the nature of humanity.

That was what she wanted to hear! Anise took a few bites of her food as the doctor spoke, chiming in with an enthusiastic "I see!" when he stopped. It looked like she had been right to assume this kind of information was everywhere.

"Eh heh, I've been thinking about joining one," she went on to say. Really, she had only been thinking about it for the past ten or twenty minutes, but that still meant it wasn't a total lie. "Safety in numbers, right? But I don't know which to go for."

[identity profile] reanalyze.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
"Which one appeals to you most?" Citan asked, conversationally. "All have something to offer, of course. I suppose a better question would be, which one do you feel you can do best in? I don't have much to do with any of them, I'm afraid. I have people I work with, but we hardly could be called official in any capacity."

What was she good at? Fonic artes? Puppeteering? Neither were talents she could put to good use in her current situation. It didn't seem like her domestic skills would get her far, either, despite the names of the clubs. Anise frowned a bit as she considered her options.

"I'm no good at healing, so we can scratch that one." Besides, that was where they were going to put Tear. If the Colonel's intention was to get them to cover more ground, joining that team would be completely useless. "Um... I guess exploring and stuff is something anybody could do, right? I don't really know what the Cooking Club does. Is there some place they're finding weapons at?" If there was such a great source of equipment, it would benefit her group to know about it, whether she decided to work with the club or not.
