Day 29: Cafeteria, Brunch

Hitsugaya left the chapel no less frustrated than before. The head doctor once again had chosen not to hide his face, yet promised he would be making an appearance at some time in the near future. He didn't like being patient, but there wasn't much choice. Either the head doctor would show his face, or he wouldn't. Renji had already seen him, and knew how to find him. That was enough.

The thought of eating made him slightly nauseous as usual, but he knew he needed to get his strength up. He could either be weak and try to force his way through brunch without eating anything, or he could be smart and actually give himself something to eat. And there was rice. Rice and fruit. He took a heaping pile of rice, and grabbed as much watermelon as he could fit on his plate, then proceeded to an empty table. He scanned the room, watching for Momo. He wasn't exactly looking forward to their conversation, knowing how she'd acted yesterday; however, he knew he had to speak to her, and there was a good chance that she would show more restraint now that the drugs were out of her system.

Thoughtfully he consumed his rice and waited.

Maybe Peter was being overly sensitive, but it was starting to feel like he was being stalked. He wasn't even all that sure why Statesman had such an interest in him. Maybe he was curious about the fact that he was so secretive?

There was no real way for him to know unless he straight-out asked him, but he figured he would just see if there was something in particular that the man wanted to talk about, or if he just wanted to chat. If it was the latter, he was going to be more suspicious.

"Heeey, States," he greeted a little sarcastically. He didn't usually run his mouth when he wasn't being Spider-man, but his patience for the other man had run thin a while ago.

If this hadn't been important, Marcus probably wouldn't have ignored the sarcastic tone to Parker's voice.

"Listen, this is important. I meant to tell you about this yesterday. And since I've figured out that your powers are probably spider related, this is even more important," He needed to get this all out before Stefan appeared in the cafeteria.

"Lord Recluse is not someone you can trust. He claims to be willing to work together to get out of here, and Stefan is the type to put escape as his number one priority... but don't make the mistake of believing that he won't decide. He's a villain, the worst kind of villain, and the most convincing liar I've ever seen." If Parker was already working for Lord Recluse, Statesman needed to find that out. If he wasn't, Marcus needed to make sure that it stayed that way.

Spider-related. Right. The way Statesman said it made it sound like that sort of thing was common, and maybe it was for him. That meant that he hadn't been as slick with his web shot last night as he'd hoped, but he hadn't had much choice at the time.

Then again, Statesman had already known he had powers of some sort. Knowing what exactly they were wasn't that big of a deal, and it wasn't like shooting web was his only power.

The warning about Lord Recluse (he still had a hard time not laughing) seemed to come out of nowhere, but Statesman actually seemed pretty serious about it. Peter raised an eyebrow at the man. "And why should I trust you? For all I know, you're the villain." He knew he was being difficult, but he wasn't even sure how much any of this concerned him. "And what does that have to do with anything spider-related?"

"You don't trust me, I understand that. Quite frankly, I don't trust you either," The fact that Parker still hadn't caught on about the significance of Spiders was a bit irritating, but perhaps it wasn't obvious.

"While originally the name stemmed from Stefan's lack of social skills, up until he arrived here he had eight spider limbs sprouting from his back. They call him the 'Master of Spiders'. They're the bad guys, and the only reason I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt is because you have the nerve to laugh at Stefan's name, and Logan seems to think you're on the right side," He paused for a moment before continuing.

"In my world, anything that bears the mark of the spider is his. They call him Lord Recluse because he now has his own country. They call his current home the City of Villains for a reason," Hopefully Logan would give Parker a heads-up about Recluse.

The fact that Statesman didn't trust him actually earned him some points. Peter knew that he could be naive at times, but they barely knew each other - if the man had trusted him, that would have been hard to believe in and of itself.

Peter wasn't that surprised to hear that spider stuff equaled bad stuff wherever Statesman came from. It was a little odd that a hero would be based on a bug of all things, and he got the feeling that was part of the reason why he had something of a bad reputation (or had, anyway - it had gotten better recently). It was kind of ironically funny that Statesman was now suspecting he was actually a villain, considering how often he'd had to deal with that back home.

Eight legs sprouting from Recluse's back, though? That was just a little gross, but Dr. Octavius had already filled that gimmick, so he didn't think he had to worry about him developing anything like that. "Gotcha'," he eventually responded. "Well, yeah, I'm not even from the same place as you, and things aren't quite the same where I come from. But I'll keep what you said in mind." That didn't mean he was going to trust Statesman any more, but it was something to take a note of.

"Yes, different dimensions can be quite distinct from one another, and your dimension is probably very far removed from mine," Now that the important business was out of the way, Marcus started eating his breakfast.

Recluse hadn't made an appearance, and Marcus was quite glad to have a break from him.

That was it, then? Peter figured he should be happy about that, and seeing Statesman dig into his food made him realize that he'd been completely distracted from his own meal.

He reached forward with both hands for his greasy breakfast sandwich and did his best to take a bite without causing the whole thing to fall apart.

It only half-worked, really, but being able to eat in relative peace (even if he had company) made the fact that he got some egg on his pants not so huge of a deal.

"My costume was waiting for me when I woke up this morning. Did they return yours to you as well?" Statesman wasn't quite sure what sort of spider-themed costume Parker would have.

All he could picture was the menacing red and black leather of Arachnos.

[identity profile] a-spider-can.livejournal.com 2007-12-29 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
It figured that he would have come out with a question like that next. Considering that Statesman knew way too much about him already, Peter got the feeling that it wouldn't be so horrible if he responded with a half-lie.

"I didn't check, but I'll make sure to tonight." He made sure to look properly intrigued by the concept of having his costume back, and he truly was glad, but he wasn't sure he wanted Statesman knowing any of the details. He had been exposed enough already, and he was kind of hoping he could start covering his tracks again.

Well, if Spiderman did have his costume back, Statesman would probably know soon enough. His room was in the same hallway as Parker's, and there was a good chance he would see the kid at night.

It would certainly be interesting to have costumed Heroes running around Landels at night. While he was glad that his team wasn't here, he couldn't help but miss them.

Manticore and Sister Psyche were probably busy planning their wedding and fighting of Rikti. Hopefully someone would realize that he'd gone missing, abducted to another dimension. Again.

The again made him grimace just slightly. This place was certainly treating him much better than his evil counter-part had, at least. Not that Tyrant had been able to actually do much to him. Statesman didn't quite realize that he was frowning as he stared off at a wall, still eating his food automatically.

[identity profile] a-spider-can.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
It seemed their conversation had come to an end, if Statesman had run out of things to say. Peter continued working on his sandwich and glanced around the room at the other patients. He had definitely met a strange assortment of people here, and he wasn't sure he could say he felt close to anyone. The closest was Logan, who he didn't even really know (but he had to take that on the other man's word), and then Brock, who only counted because they had actually known each other before this.

It was just a little depressing to realize that those were his options for "friends" here at Landel's, but that didn't mean that he was going to lose hope. Logan seemed willing and ready to get things done, at least, but Peter was starting to accept that what they were trying to accomplish was going to take a long time.

Visitor shift was next, wasn't it? Peter knew he didn't have any family or friends he wanted to see here. While he was sure MJ and his aunt were worried about him, he didn't think it would be any good for them to see him in this place.
