Nightshift 27: M1-M40 block hallway

[From here]

Recluse turned the corner into the cell block hallway, still internally ranting about Landel. He was used to being the one in control of people like that infuriating doctor. There was a whole recruitment program for 'Mad Scientists' in Arachnos.

The vast majority of them ended up being killed by their on projects. Often in quite amusing, bloody, agonizing ways. That one little thought made everything seem just a little bit better.

The woman she had pinned was of a delicate bone structure, obviously Asian the Bride thought, and that lent it easily to breaking bones if needed. The light suddenly went out, but the Bride didn't really notice. She didn't need light now that she had her hands on the woman, though idly wondered back in the teeny, tiny part of her mind that held rationality if she'd caused the woman's flashlight to break.

The woman didn't know who BB was. She could be lying.

Beatrix wrenched the woman's arm further behind her back, pushing the limits of the joint. "Don't lie to me," she said in a deadly cold voice. "Where is she?"

It was an effort not to cry out in pain; she'd had worse, but rarely like this. And never when there was no one around to help.

"I'm not," she managed to get out. "I don't... know who that is."

The woman had to be new, aware she was a prisoner--and very much getting the wrong idea about the type of prison they were being held in.

She didn't know who BB was...

Beatrix snarled and wrenched the woman's arm harder feeling and hearing it pop. "My daughter, bitch! Where are they keeping the children?"

She leaned her weight in more as she spoke, her mouth close to the woman's ear so she could hear the words over the pain. The Bride's tone spoke of a dangerous insanity that only a mother separated from her child could produce. And Beatrix had a leg up on that.

Raine half screamed, half gasped in pain; she didn't mean to or want to, but dislocated joints hurt like hell. She hoped someone would at least hear, but--from the way the sound echoed, it was unlikely anyone would easily find her, or quickly.

"They're not--housed anywhere differently from the rest of us," she managed to say, sweat beading on her face. "If she's here, you should... be able to find her, but she probably isn't. My--my child isn't here." Genis was really more her son than her brother, regardless of what they called each other.

She could understand the woman's concern, but wasn't inclined to sympathy at the moment.

So this one had a child too? How lucky of her to not have to go through the hell that Beatrix was.

"A five year old girl," Beatrix said in clipped tones. "Long brown hair, slightly curly, and dark brown eyes. Have you seen her?"

A second pause. "If you lie to me..." She twisted the arm a little more to emphasize the point. "And why wouldn't she be here?"

Raine gasped again, unable to even speak for a few long moments. Finally, she said in a bare whisper, "No, I haven't. And there aren't... any children here this young... that I know of." Tears of pain were gathering in her eyes; she'd thought getting her head slammed into the wall hurt, but that was nothing compared to this.

I don't have any reason to lie to you! I don't have the slightest idea who you are! And people said she had trust issues?

Beatrix moved her free hand from holding the woman against the wall, trusting her body and the pain she'd inflicted to keep the woman in place, to the woman's hair. She pulled back, tilting the woman's face up toward her. Beatrix was quite a bit taller than this woman, as she was to most Asian women, so she was able to look down into the woman's eyes.

It was dark, so she wouldn't get a good enough look, but her own eyes had adjusted enough to the lack of light to make out the woman's eyes. If this woman was lying, she'd know now and if so... this woman's neck would be incredible easy to snap...

"Who runs this place?" She asked in a controlled icy voice.

"We don't... we don't know much for sure." Raine struggled to control her breathing enough to answer. "There's a Head Doctor... Martin Landel. You've probably... heard him on the intercom. At night he taunts us... during the day, he pretends... this is a normal mental hospital."

Even through all the pain, she could feel the way her hair had fallen; her ears had to be exposed. Well--if this woman wasn't used to elves, she ought to get a good idea that nothing about this place was her idea of normal.

[identity profile] quickdrawbkiddo.livejournal.com 2007-10-08 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
"Martin Landel..." The Bride let his name roll off her tongue in a sweet seductive tone as if she was talking to a lover. So he was the one that had taken her from her daughter. Killing him would be sweeter than killing... well, everyone.

For her captive's sake, Beatrix noted that her words matched some of what Naomi had said during dinner. She could also tell, through the haze of the woman's pain-filled eyes, that she wasn't lying. She's kept this pale-haired woman in enough pain, vulnerable enough, that she's have had a death wish to lie, well aware of how tenuous a hold on sanity the Bride had.

Something caught her attention out of the corner of her eye. Something about the woman's ear. It looked... pointed. The Bride moved her hand from the woman's hair to run her fingers lightly along the edge of the pointed ear to confirm with her hands what her eyes had seen.

Definitely pointed. A shame the woman had been born with such a disfigurement, she thought, knowing the multitude of birth deformities one could have as she'd read extensively about them when she was pregnant. This woman probably attracted weenie gamer-geeks that wanted a 'hot elven girlfriend'. She had to have had a hard childhood...

"Congratulations," Beatrix said coldly. "You get to live."

The Bride shoved the elf-woman into the wall, though not as harsh as she'd been during this whole encounter so it may have seemed even gentle in comparison. She released the woman and quickly retreated back the way she'd come without a sound.

She had a name now. Martin Landel.

Raine tried to catch herself, not up to sustaining another head injury so soon after the first, and mostly succeeded. Breathing hard, she turned around and slid down the wall, too weak to stand for the moment. She wasn't sure what hurt more, her arm or her head; she cradled her right arm in her left in an attempt to keep it immobile. She knew how to replace a dislocated joint, but it was immensely painful. For that and other reasons, it was very difficult and ill-advised for someone to do it themselves.

Worse, having the joint popped back into place stood a very good chance of making her pass out from the pain. If she had to do it herself because nobody at the Aid Society had the strength or the courage to help, she would at least be safe if she got herself to M35 first.

Wincing, she got to her feet, slowly and painfully; unwilling to leave her weapon behind, she very carefully let go of her right arm and took the broom with her left hand. Her balance was a little lacking; she ended up needing the broom as a walking staff.

Taking a moment to wipe the tears of pain away, she started off towards Tamaki's room again. Once she got there, she would be safe.
