Day 27: Library

Libraries, he'd found, were rarely as dull as people made them out to be.  Though he felt no magic in these tomes, they were still full of useful information.  Maybe some of them could tell him a little bit more about this world he'd landed himself in.

For that matter, why hadn't he run into any of the others yet?  They'd all been fairly close together when they'd left Rekord, but he hadn't seen a trace of any of them.  He was able to communicate easily with the people here though, which led him to believe Mokona was within a mile or so.  Unless the ones running this little game had some other way to let all these other-worldly people communicate amongst themselves.  In which case, the others could be very far away indeed.

The library had that wonderful smell of old books, and Fai traced his fingers along the shelves, skimming titles and pulling books that struck his fancy.  Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz, The War of the Worlds, and with a smile, he found Bram Stoker's Dracula as well.  Raven had been telling the truth then, in spite of his own lies.  Ought to be a good start.  He sat leisurely at one of the tables and began flipping through his selections.

Lee held back the shudder that would have run through his body; they were all merely pawns. Or maybe they were not even pawns anymore. Maybe they were simply toys.

It made Lee want to explore even more. Tonight, he decided, he would go exploring. He would try to find out what was going on, or at least something to help the others.

In the end, it didn't matter so much as to the purpose behind everything -- which wasn't and couldn't be justified by any means -- as how to get out of the mess regardless. That much was obvious. Kakashi had heard stories of similar cases (as well as been part of teams sent to investigate a couple), though never this elaborate or large-scaled, in which people had been captured for experimentation -- Orochimaru, in particular, had left quite the legacy behind him -- and as far as Kakashi was concerned this was, at the foundation, no different.

Kakashi was silent for another moment before speaking up again. "In terms of ratio, how are the numbers between the staff and the patients?"

Haku's advice had occurred to Kakashi shortly after he heard Sasuke's explanation on his condition; and there were still some things he wanted to ask concerning the Sharingan's role in it, but they would have to wait.

There was a moment of irritation as Haku dismissed his words -- The games are part of the experimentation, you fool -- but Sasuke let it slide. Anyone with half a mind could figure that out.

"There are a lot of staff," Sasuke said, and frowned. He actually didn't know the precise ratio. "Some of us are actually assigned individual nurses." Extremely annoying individual nurses. "I assume we outnumber them, but not as much as would be the case in a normal hospital."

Normally, patients outnumbered staff. And at Landel's, they probably did at least nominally, but there were a lot of nurses and orderlies, as well as an entire group of doctors that Sasuke hadn't even known about before one of them had blinded him.
