Day 27: Library

Libraries, he'd found, were rarely as dull as people made them out to be.  Though he felt no magic in these tomes, they were still full of useful information.  Maybe some of them could tell him a little bit more about this world he'd landed himself in.

For that matter, why hadn't he run into any of the others yet?  They'd all been fairly close together when they'd left Rekord, but he hadn't seen a trace of any of them.  He was able to communicate easily with the people here though, which led him to believe Mokona was within a mile or so.  Unless the ones running this little game had some other way to let all these other-worldly people communicate amongst themselves.  In which case, the others could be very far away indeed.

The library had that wonderful smell of old books, and Fai traced his fingers along the shelves, skimming titles and pulling books that struck his fancy.  Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz, The War of the Worlds, and with a smile, he found Bram Stoker's Dracula as well.  Raven had been telling the truth then, in spite of his own lies.  Ought to be a good start.  He sat leisurely at one of the tables and began flipping through his selections.

Leon did know what a computer was, though he wasn't entirely certain about what a hacker was. He simply assumed it had something to do with working on the machines and left it at that.

He puffed out his chest a bit at her first question. "Yes. as in magic. I'm a heraldry user. ...That means I can cast spells." Such simple terms. "And I'm not from Earth myself, but I have a friend who is!"

He would have added a comment about her not being any more crazy than he was... but he was still reserving judgement on that.

"Oh ho ho!" cackled the redhead. "Ed has never seen real magic. Although," she put a finger to her bottom lip for a thoughtful moment, "Ed has seen some things that looked like magic, but those all surely had explanations of the scientific nature. Can you show Ed really real magics?" She smiled hopefully at Leon, thoroughly intrigued.

The young mage looked a bit embarrassed at this. "I would love to be able to show you," he began with a sigh, "but I can't. Not really. This place seems to weaken everyone with magical skills. It would take a lot out of me to do, and I need my energy for tonight..." It sounded like a poor excuse, but there wasn't anything else to say. It was the truth!

"Ah, Ed understands," replied the girl solemnly. "Tricky of the doctors and nurses to do such a thing, but also very smart. They must be very smart to keep everyone here." Ed brightened at her next thought. "Maybe Ed will see magic tonight!" Then she remembered, "But Ed is going to try and help the people of the Aide Club." Suddenly bright again, "Maybe they use magic there to heal!"

[identity profile] heraldric.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
"Maybe..!" Leon continued to smile nervously. He was a bit taken back that the girl had believed him right away despite his lack of proof. Perhaps she was just very naive. Or simple minded. "I'm sure you'll get to see someone use it. I know I'm not the only caster here..."

[identity profile] hack-ed.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh?" Ed cocked her head curiously. "Who else do you know with the powers of magicalness? Hmm, but perhaps they would not want to show Ed either. Maybe they'll use it in battles in the spooky dark? But Ed has been told not to wander at night, or creatures will give her a terrible fright." The girl looked downcast at this. It wasn't fair, she wanted to fight the monsters too.

[identity profile] heraldric.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
"Well...," Leon frowned. "I haven't seen any other mages here from my world... but I've seen others posting on the bulletin!" There seemed a fair amount if everyone on there was being truthful.

"And it's true, you should be careful at night." The boy's expression also became downcast. "My friend was attacked by one last night and seriously wounded." And he hadn't been able to do anything to help.

[identity profile] hack-ed.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh no," Ed echoed the boy's sadness. "Ed saw a lot of injuries happen to friends on the Bebop. Well, one of them mostly. But Ed was the only one to make it through the attack of the spoooky space creature without getting bitten! Such a nasty bite, gave everyone a fright. Made them go nighty night, but in the end it worked out alright!" She smiled brightly, hoping good news of any sort would cheer the blue-haired boy.

Ed's quirky mannerisms made it difficult to stay saddened, and Leon found himself clearing his throat to avoid giggling when the girl grinned. 'Spooky space creature' indeed.

"Well, that's good," he managed. "This place seems to have it's own healing properties - people get well much quicker than they would normally. So hopefully he won't be down and out too long."

[identity profile] hack-ed.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"Innnnteresting!" Ed mused, acting as if she were thinking aloud. "Ed did not know this, and wonders why the people in charge would allow such a thing? It seems patients in stitches would be easier to track, instead of allowing them to heal quickly back."

[identity profile] heraldric.livejournal.com 2007-10-02 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
"I've been wondering that too," agreed Leon. He picked a book at random from the shelf without even looking at the title and began flipping through the pages - just to have something to do with his hands. "Why would they send things to attack us during the night and then heal us up afterwards? It doesn't make any sense, really."

[identity profile] hack-ed.livejournal.com 2007-10-02 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
"Strange strange. Like a game, but no fun for the pieces." Ed thought for a moment before asking a question that had been bothering her. "Ed wonders how long they intend to keep us, or if the powers that be will ever release us? Ed heard of people disappearing forever, but probably not escaping. It was old messages on the board of bulletins."

[identity profile] heraldric.livejournal.com 2007-10-02 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Leon had heard of people disappearing as well. Would it be too hopeful to imagine that they might have escaped? Gotten free of this place? He didn't know if he could bear thinking that the only way out was to vanish from existence, or be killed.

"Like a game is right..." he muttered. They were just being toyed with. "We have to be needed for something. Maybe those that disappeared were no longer needed and sent back to their worlds without warning..." It was better to think that than otherwise.

[identity profile] hack-ed.livejournal.com 2007-10-03 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
Ed didn't really believe that; it seemed to her something quite dark and sinister was at work, even though so many odd things didn't add up. Maybe whoever was in charge was crazy.

But she kept up a hopeful smile for the boy as she replied, "I've heard differently. Life is but a dream!" She giggled and stretched her arms up high above her head, hands clasped, then dropped them again to swing lazily. She was thinking a nap sounded awfully good right now. But surely soon would be something of the dinner variety, and then she could see for herself what all the fuss was about nighttime.
