The Intercom
10 August 2013 @ 07:33 am
Like clockwork, the intercom crackled to life to signal the end and the beginning of another shift; however, the confident voice of the Head Doctor didn't surface. In its place was the quick inhalation of breath and a long pause as if the announcer was trying to find the courage to speak.

"Good afternoon!" The voice--A woman's--finally rushed out, a bit stronger than needed in a mental institute. "It's time for lunch!" was her clipped explanation. "Let's see--" There was the sound of shuffling papers echoing form the intercom before the woman continued. "Today is... grilled cheese with ham or egg salad sandwiches, a choice of--Right, a choice of milk or juice... Fruit?" It sounded more like a question than necessary. "And a chocolate chip cookie.

"It's a beautiful day out, so why not take your lunches to the courtyard or rec field today, hmmm? Otherwise, you are free to eat where you want. Nurses, please escort the patients to the Sun Room, or the game Room. Where ever they please!"

And that was that. The intercom clicked off.

Zero

Finally, it was lunchtime. Second shift had gone by way too slowly for Zero's liking, although spending his time sitting and waiting impatiently for the shift to be over didn't help him any. Having a staring contest with his nurse probably helped even less...but it did give him something to do that wasn't sitting or staring at the board, at least.

But that was then, this was now. Another awkward intercom broadcast aside, Zero was very much ready for the next shift to start - and he was welcoming it by standing from the couch he'd been restlessly sitting on for who knew how long and staring at the prisoners leaving the Arts and Crafts room. Ciel had to be one of them. He hadn't seen her come out of the showers at all, and the nurse had prevented him from going into that room for a reason, right? So she had to be there. Had to be.

She better be...

After talking to Lloyd, Kyousuke moved to the bulletin again, and was able to confirm that everyone from last night's excursion was okay. Physically, at least. Korra hadn't seemed too thrilled over the board, and not without reason, but there was probably nothing Kyousuke could say that would make make her feel better it, so he didn't bother trying. Better to give her some space, and leave things like that to someone more qualified.

When the nurse asked where he wanted to his lunch, he decided to go out onto the field, and so far, it looked like he was the only one here. He almost thought it was a shame to have something like this here with so few people interested in actually using it, but in a place like this, people had much more important worries on their minds, so it couldn't be helped. As for him, he was perfectly content to have the whole field to himself, since he just wanted to blow off some steam by practicing by himself anyway.

For the time being, he sat his lunch off to the side and did some light stretches, before grabbing some balls out of the shed for some shooting practice. He could wait for his food until sometime near the end of the shift.
