Nightshift 26: First Floor Stairwell Beside Waiting Room 1

[from here]

Aidou paused for the second time that night, listening half-heartedly to the radio announcement. The volume was painfully low, so that it didn't attract any unwanted attention. None of it interested him, even as the riddles came easily enough. None of it was useful to him. So far nothing the monkey on the radio had offered had caught his eye, and he doubted that would change.

Stepping into the stairwell, he glanced to the floor. He was willing to bet the other three stairwells on this floor were the same - no stairs leading to the basement, and no stairs leading past the second floor.

So where were the access points? It was a good question.

Gremio shook his head, pressing the cloth a little more firmly against the wound. "We need to keep moving. With a wound like this, it'll take far too long for the bleeding to stop. And I worry about him going into shock as well." He glanced at her over his shoulder. "This is a hospital, isn't it, Lady Jean? Even if it's primarily a mental institution, there has to be someplace around here with medical supplies."

Leon pressed his lips together tightly, to keep from retorting that he would certainly not go into shock. Much as he hated to admit it, shock was not a matter of personal weakness, or something that could be staved off indefinitely by force of will--it was what the body did, regardless of what the mind wanted. "I can keep moving." That much, he could promise. Until the point he fainted dead away from blood loss, he could keep putting his feet one in front of the other.

He didn't say anything about Gremio's hope of medical supplies, but he had a sinking feeling that all such things were kept on the second floor, and thus well-guarded. The monster hadn't chased after them, but it had fought to keep anyone from moving past it--that spoke of a guardian beast, of it being there to keep the patients away from something, perhaps something valuable.

"The medical supplies are located on the second floor," Jean said quietly. "I do not think it is wise to risk fighting another monster again, not with Leon the way he is." It was a difficult decision to make, but what was the point of getting medical supplies if there was a greater chance of being worse off for it?

Pulling Gremio's shirt over her burnt arm, she said, "Gremio, if you are strong enough, I would like you to carry Leon downstairs. Leon, keep pressure on the wound. When we get to the first floor, we will find a place to rest and get some water."

The second floor. Ha. That would be the way of it, huh? Gremio sighed, shaking his head. He knew how to deal with injuries on the field, especially when there wasn't time to find actual supplies. So this shouldn't have been a problem, right? Still, he had to wonder if there was another way up to the second floor...

... Gah, he didn't have time to think about this. "Certainly, Lady Jean." He had a feeling Leon wasn't going to like this, but he didn't really have a choice at the moment. He turned his back to Leon, pulling his hair over his shoulder to keep it out of the way. "Arms around my neck, please, Sir Magnus."

For a moment, Leon just stared at Gremio, appalled. To be carried off the field of battle... humiliating! "I can walk!" But... Jean was nominally the team leader, and it had been her idea. Damn it. "... Fine. Whatever." Definitely no trace left of politeness, when Leon was in this much pain.

Putting his arms around Gremio's neck, Leon struggled to keep the pressure on his wounded hand. It was tougher than he had expected, he kept flinching away from causing himself more pain and then having to force himself to press down again. He would never say anything about the pain, of course, so instead he covered his discomfort with more rude remarks. "Drop me, and I'll kill you."

"The question is not whether you can walk, but how much blood you will lose if you do," Jean said, her voice a little crisp. Her injuries, along with being unable to complete the map, were making her a little cranky.

"Gremio, I trust you are strong enough that a short trip to the first floor will not be a problem." As soon as Leon was properly settled in, they were heading downstairs. Much as Leon didn't like it, it would be quicker, and they'd have more time to try and attend to their injuries in relative safety.

"For heaven's sake, you're in no position to be killing anyone. Now just hold on, will you? I swear I'm not going to drop you." He fell to his knees, both arms going back to grab the wounded man's legs, before finally standing again, lifting Leon with surprising strength.

He adjusted his grip on him so that he could carry him a bit easier, before turning his attention back to Jean. "It won't be a problem at all. Let's get going."

Leon actually weighed very little, in any case, just barely over 100lbs. He briefly tightened his arms around Gremio's neck a little too much, at the comment that he was in no position to be killing anyone. Obviously, he disagreed. He eased up after a moment, though, snorting softly to himself. "I'm left-handed, besides."

Jean nodded tightly. "Very well," she said. "We leave." Time was of the essence, and indeed, they'd wasted enough of it already.
