Nightshift 26: 2F Hallway near Stairway and Nurse's Station
[From here.]
By now the Colonel was just surprised.
From everything he'd heard earlier that day, he was expecting monsters to pop out of every orifice of this Institute. Instead, it remained all but blissfully quiet, and in a way it was a big disappointment. Though as they say, knock on wood or he'd regret what he just said (or thought). Yet the silence gave him time to think, a small bit of time to contemplate to himself without the loud chatter of other patients around him.
By then he was venturing in territory that left him alert despite whatever bit of introspection came to mind. Eventually, Jade chose to hug the wall, fingers pressing lightly against the cold surface as he continued along his way.

"Hmm?" Sometime during his retreat the other bit of fontech came to life all on its own, causing Jade to blink down at said object in his pocket before pulling it out. The accent was completely foreign to him, but it didn't take long for him to take the initiative. In practically no time the Colonel had his notebook whipped out, quickly writing down everything this enigmatic man spoke.
"So we're to receive our aide in riddles?" Now it really was starting to feel like a good old-fashioned mystery, but Jade hardly minded. In fact, he was almost excited about the whole aspect, and chose to solve these conundrums on his way to the 'little dream's' room.

The second floor, finally. So far, Chase hadn't seen any corpses (although they would have improved the aura of the building) or even too many bloodstains, so nothing had slipped out of the woodwork to attack people around here yet. Or they had just escaped without contact.
Depressing, if you thought about it.
If his memory served him right, straight ahead would lead to the area above the Sun Room, where there would doubtless be entertainment, and near there was the entrance to the Chapel. Excellent.

Ichigo shined his flashlight up and down the familiar looking hallway. There was no sign of the child from last night, and he frowned. He hoped the boy was safe. It didn't matter that the child had harmed him, or even Rukia for that matter, he was still scared and alone.
The idea made him feel cold inside, despite the coat he had on.
Finding nothing in this area, he headed further down the hall.

Keigo managed to conquer the stairs with little incident, even if his leg was throbbing now. They had fixed the bandage after his shower earlier that day, but he knew that if he kept running on it, the wound would reopen for sure. Whatever, he thought, I can handle it for a little longer!
With that, he started up again, wincing as he tried to keep a steady pace after who he assumed to be Ichigo.

The trip up the stairs was blissfully quick and painless, and a sweep of the light revealed no monsters immediately before them. But Homura could hear the sounds of battle coming from ahead, the hall he had wanted to take Hijikata down.
A change of plans, then.
"This way." Homura headed instead to the left, their trip changed from mere metal gathering to exploration. He had to be careful that Hijikata didn't pick up on the fact that Homura had never been this way before, at least not before they had tangible results. It was the reason Homura was going against the part of him that wanted to leap into the battle; time was precious and quickly gone. Better to get something accomplished before having a bit of fun.

Max limped out of the stairwell, closing the door firmly behind her. Just in case the cat wasn't dead. More dead. She didn't want the thing attacking her from behind.
Her leg burned with pain and she was dripping blood on the floor. Panting, she leaned against the wall and slid down to sit on the cold tile, leaning her head back against the wall.
Well, that had been a bit more exciting than she'd planned...

"I've only gotten close to the upstairs once," Valyn was saying, the mage light still bobbing along at his shoulder. "I don't know where that room is, but..."
Light fell on a familiar face - that girl that had reminded him something of Shana. Max had been her name, hadn't it? Yes, Max. The woman who had said she'd be out that night. He'd tried to warn her. What was she doing off by herself?
"Max?" he called out, tilting his head. She looked as though she were injured. "Are you alright?"

Flicking on his flashlight momentarily, Aya studied the hallway briefly and then turned off the light. He leaned against the wall and let his eyes get used to the darkness. He didn't want to gather any unwanted attention and stayed quiet, just listening to the sounds around the facility.
It was easy not to think about anything when he was alone. Just move and pay attention to details of solid material.
He let his feet take him to another direction than last night, silent on the polished floors. A glimmer of wavering light shone up from the sun room, painting shadows on the dark hallway and he could recognize forms and figures by it.

"Besides," Peony was saying as he entered the door to the stairs, "We can count on Anise to protect us, can we not?" If Anise could mostly successfully protect the Fon Master, she could easily protect the emperor and his cute escort.
He knew it was only a matter of time, really, before someone let his obfuscation slip and called him 'Majesty' in front of the other patients here. He was mostly sure Cyrille didn't know yet. How would the little dream change when she knew?
He'd enjoy these times before they too were destroyed by his status.
Peony's lips were still smiling, but his eyes showed that same sadness that they did when he was thinking of the past's lost love. It was only his luck that it was dark enough not to see.
In his usually bright voice, he said, "We're getting there after all, it looks like. Past the halfway point, right?"

At the very least, they weren't in any immediate danger. And that was something to be cheerful about! The best thing to do was to forget all about that creepy thing. When she entered the hallway, Anise was back to being all smiles.
"Of course you can count on me!" She was happy that even the emperor placed his trust in her, but she wished she felt as optimistic as she sounded. Even if she was a soldier, without Tokunaga or her fonic artes she was just... well, a girl with a pipe.
Even so, she moved in a little closer to Peony. "So make sure you stay extra close to me, okay?" Worried or not, she wasn't going to miss out on a chance to flirt with the emperor himself!

As he reached the second floor, Ravi heard even more noise up here. It sounded like tonight was a lot busier up here than last night, huh. From the sound of whatever was going on, it had to be fighting - maybe there were bigger things to worry about up here than weird kids this time round?
But there wasn't anything he could do other than try to get past and keep going. Past the pharmacy, right? That had to be somewhere around here...
Ravi made his way down the hallway.

They reached the stairway without any hassle or stupid distractions, which Albel didn't really mind. He quickly ascended the stairs, reaching the hallway above it.
Swiping his flashlight around the area, he noticed there weren't any maggots around. Good

“Considering that way was the direction you gave me that wonderful little dance of yours,” Yuber murmured as he gestured down towards the balcony way, before moving to direct their attention to the hallway closest to the pair. “Perhaps it’s best we concentrate in this direction for tonight… unless you have any other options?”

Asch started to say something in response, but ended up cutting himself off with an angry sigh. If someone wanted to change another persons identity, they could very well do it without having to change their memories. The redhead knew that all too well.
And, if it came down to the two, he'd prefer someone messing with his memories, as opposed to someone messing with time itself. It was still an unnerving prospect, there was no doubt about that, but it was easier to accept than the latter choice. Besides... you couldn't regret things you didn't know. A lack of memories would certainly make things easier.
Regardless, he really couldn't expect either of them to understand those reasonings.
"Tch. Go ahead and think that way if you want."

Well, at least Luke had some sense. (Maybe it was true, that saying that twins could be really different from each other.) Still, something the boy had said definitely drew raised eyebrows from the blond, and he looked over at him. "Waking up without memories...again? Have you suffered from amnesia before or something, Luke?"
Maybe it was a personal question, but, well, Luke had brought it up, so Claude didn't feel bad asking about it. Besides, the more he learned about the people being held captive here, the better off he'd be, right?

The stairs were fairly busy when he reached them. Hijikata didn't stop to speak with anyone. He wanted to drop off his weapons as soon as he could, and then see if there would be time enough to explore further as planned.

Like the stairwell, the next hall they arrived at was empty. It wasn't too terribly surprising when one considered that beyond the stairs connected to it, there wasn't much else to the hall, but Light found the absence of other patients to be unsettling anyway.
He was right in the middle of checking the hallway for potential attackers when the sound of running feet and raised voices caught his attention. Raising his flashlight, his eyes widened as he caught sight of a red thing attacking a small group of people in the adjacent hall-- the one they needed to go through to reach their destination.
... Shit.
"Ryuga," he said, once again sounding a lot calmer than he actually felt, "we may need to find somewhere else to go." There was a brief but pregnant pause. "Again. Now."

Unlike certain other people, Kadaj wasn't at all bothered by the ongoing battle in the other hall once he finally reached the second floor. It didn't affect him, so why should he bother? There were plenty of other people the monster would attack before trying to kill (or was that eat?) him, so he felt confident enough to keep walking rather than panic and try to flee.
The second floor was turning out a lot more entertaining than he'd thought it would be. Who knew? Maybe one of those people being attacked would die and he'd be able to watch!
Keeping one eye on the fight, he headed further down the hall, eventually looking away from it entirely in favor of his randomly chosen course. What was over this way?

Climbing the stairs, the replica wrinkled his nose in distaste for the second time that night, moving closer to Naminé's side. From what it smelled like up here, medical supplies would be a very good idea. Luckily, at the moment, the second floor's stairway was devoid of people, though the presence of a few still lingered.
"It smells like fire and blood up here," Soma commented in an undertone to the two, gripping the end of the pipe he carried tighter. He sniffed deeply a few times, grimacing. It was very strong. Why hadn't he smelled it downstairs, too?
He really hated this place. "Let's make this quick." In case anything is lurking around. It'd explain why it was so empty, at least.

Naminé couldn't see anything that would indicate such things, but she knew better than to doubt Soma when he said he smelled something. She moved closer to him as he moved closer to her. Luckily, their destination was only a short moment away. It would be terrible if they were caught by whatever had caused the smell.
"It's over there," She pointed to the direction that the room was in. "The smell isn't coming from that area, is it?"
Naminé was more than willing to abandon her plan if she knew they were going to be walking into danger.

He was finally to the top of the stairs. Just a couple more hallways, and he'd finally be there. So obviously, the only thing to do was go forward.
