Day 26: Intercom, Evening

The intercom clicked on with its usual jingle, the Head Doctor clearing his throat before he made his last shift-changing announcement of the day.

"Well, now that everyone is clean and having fun, I suppose it's time for everyone to be escorted back to their rooms for dinner! Yes, yes, I know the game room can be entertaining and doctor sessions can be fulfilling, but we only have so much time in the day, don't we?

"Ah, and speaking of dinner, tonight, we'll be having an old favorite--seasoned steak, a baked potato, and peas! Yum, yum. You also get a choice of vegetable soup or caesar salad--just tell your nurse which you'd prefer--and may also choose from our usual variety of drinks."

He made his usual pause, perhaps contemplating what the night would have in store once the sun fully set. Now, however, wasn't the time to reveal such musings, and so he ended on his usual cheery note:

"That's about all for now! I hope you all enjoy your suppers."

And again the intercom turned off.

"I am new, as well. I woke here this morning." Leon wondered, but did not dare ask, if Clark had also died before arriving here; judging by the messages on the board in the Sun Room it was not entirely uncommon.

Sighing softly, Leon got up from the bed and began to inspect the room. Unlikely though it was, he couldn't ignore the possibility that something in here might be usable as a weapon.

The pens didn't surprise him, as he'd seen then used and used them himself for writing messages on the board, but he stared blankly at the flashlight and radio, not at all sure what they were supposed to be.

Huh. Guess they were in the same boat then. He watched as Leon wandered about the room, looking it over with a critical eye as if he was looking for something specifically. Clark didn't think they'd leave a means of getting out in the rooms, and a quick x-ray scan of the room produced nothing he saw as really useful.

Leon had stopped in front of something, and was now staring at it as if baffled at just what a flashlight and radio were doing here. Clark had to admit it didn't really make sense - okay, the flashlight didn't make sense, unless the staff actually expected them to go running around during the night - but he didn't see anything wrong with the radio. It wasn't like it was going to blow up in their faces.

"What's wrong?" Clark asked.

Leon reddened faintly, and scowled at nothing. He had two choices here, and neither was pleasant: he could admit to ignorance, or miss out on potentially useful items. Finally, practicality won out over pride. "... I'm not sure what these do."

Was he serious? Clark had a vague idea that homeschooled kids might be a bit clueless about some stuff, but not knowing about radios? Or even flashlights? Was he that sheltered? Realizing after a moment that he'd been staring in surprise at Leon, Clark cleared his throat and went over to show him how to work the flashlight.

"It's just a flashlight," Clark said. He took the flashlight and showed Leon where the On switch was; simple enough, right? He flicked it, and light spilled against the wall. "You use it to see where you're going. It's really easy so long as you've got batteries in it."

Did he have to explain batteries too? Clark hoped not, and decided to just explain the radio before they started going into the science lessons.

"And this's a radio," Clark added, looking for any signs that this rung a bell for Leon. "You just turn it on like this," he demonstrated as he spoke, a soft classical tune coming out, "And it turns out. People use it to listen to music and news."
