NIGHT 65: WEST WING, NORTH HALL 1-A

[from here]

Almost there. Soma kept moving. If she stopped now, she'd start thinking about how much worse she felt now than she did this morning, and that would be a terrible mistake to make.

Other than passing a blond kid back in his room block and then watching as a teenage girl with pale hair stepped into the door he'd just left, Harvey hadn't encountered much in the way of other patients so far. And definitely no patients-turned-monsters. That was just fine by him. It probably made sense, since he imagined it would take time for a human body to warp into something else.

Then again, what did he know?

As Harvey walked, he tucked his journal under his arm and shoved his hands in his pockets, feeling his coin in one and the bone bracelet in the other. Right now, both of them were small comforts, but he didn't need much of a push to move down the hall.

The halls were dark and eerily silent so far. It could have been any building at night, but what Lloyd had heard from other patients and the Head Doctor himself gave the darkness a completely different feel. His plan not to use his flashlight had quickly been shot when he'd realized how dark the building was.

He paused for a moment, trying to remember if the nurse had brought him from the left or the right. Taking his best guess, he turned right. He was pretty sure the door he'd come through had been the closer one.

The next hallway. Again there was door a nearby, and Gabriel saw it almost instantly when he cast the beam of his torch around. He paused for a moment, mapping the area in his head. That had been one good thing about Rachel--she hadn't wanted him to loiter, but she had been willing to talk, to help the 'poor dear' acclimatise. He needed this door.

This hallway was different to the last, though. Those had been smaller, dimensions definable even without proper sight. This one was big enough that Gabriel couldn't quite sense where the edges were, and turning his back on the yawning expanse behind him made his throat tighten. The silence in the corridor, except for the quick steps of patients moving through them, made it worse.

Enough, he told himself sternly. Be less anxious. And move fast.

He slid through the door.

It wasn't until Skulduggery had moved into the main hallway - emptier than the block halls, surprisingly - that something in the back of his mind suddenly clicked, and he realized what Landel had meant in that announcement.

The illness going around the Institute, affecting Sora and the Scarecrow and several others. Skulduggery had already worked out that it wasn't a natural illness, that it would only lead to something bad, but he hadn't known that it would turn the infected patients into the very monsters that allegedly lived everywhere around here. Was that where Landel got them from? Had even that dead woman in the Sun Room last night once been a patient, just as trapped here as the rest of them?

The Scarecrow. He'd been fine when Skulduggery left, but what if it wasn't a gradual transition?

Another choice was before him, and like so many times before, Skulduggery chose to keep moving. The odds were in the Scarecrow's favor, and Skulduggery couldn't abandon Rita. As mature as she seemed, she was still just a child. His mood was much darker, though, as he moved on into the next hall.

At least the hallways seemed to be clear. No sign of a struggle anywhere, though there weren't many prisoners out to begin with, transformed or otherwise. Not that Zero was complaining; it meant his allies were less likely to be in danger right now, and that was always a good thing.

Even so, he didn't slow his brisk walking pace at all. He needed to find them before things got bad, not after...

It was surprisingly quiet out here. Guy would have expected to see plenty of patients running around, either to go check out the clue or just because they were in a panic due to the transformations that were supposedly going on.

Instead, there wasn't a soul in sight, and that almost seemed more eerie, in a way. Guy knew that he was letting his own emotions get the better of him, though, and so he tried to keep calm. For now, that was the best thing he could do for both Claude and Anise.

"Are you feeling pretty much the same as earlier today?" Guy asked Claude as they moved down the hallway.

After hearing Guy explain their reason for traveling as a group, Claude had to admit that he agreed. He really, really hoped that they wouldn't have an immediate crisis on their hands, and that both he and Anise wouldn't transform tonight, but there were few guarantees in a place like this. They had to be careful, which was why they were going to split up and explore different options in the first place.

He followed Guy after giving a quick nod, doing his best to keep an eye out even if his reaction time and focus had probably suffered because of his illness. It was a good thing he and Guy had rooms that were so close together, he thought to himself. They could watch each other's backs as soon as they left the patient blocks.

Thankfully, the hall seemed quiet, although it took Claude a moment to realize there weren't any patients either. Guy's question diverted his attention for a moment, though, and he glanced over toward his friend.

"Oh, um..." He scratched his cheek with his free hand. "Yeah, pretty much. It hasn't gotten any worse, at least." Which wasn't much consolation, but it was something.

As he dashed out into the hallways, Niikura tried to remember what Shiina's room number was. F...F...it was F19, wasn't it? Damn it, if only he'd kept that piece of paper where she'd written it down for him, then he could say for sure. The number in his head sounded right, though. He'd have to just give it a shot and hope for the best.

Axe slung over his shoulder, flashlight in hand and machete tucked beneath his back belt, Sechs jogged his way out of the patient cell area and out into the first hallway of his journey to the medical wing. His body still nagged at him with fatigued muscles and prickling anxiety in his skin, but he forced himself onward. Nothing was more important than that clue to his cure!

It was empty here. Empty and dark. The wisps of dark energy that were still moving off of Sora's transformed body seemed to only increase as he molded into the shows, pressing against the walls and the floor.

There was no one here to attack, no hearts to harvest, but that wouldn't stop him from moving and searching. That was all a Heartless could do, wander through the dark until it found a bit of tantalizing light, that warm source which would nurture rather than hurt him.

Eventually he reached a door and barreled through it.

There wasn't really anyone around in this part of the institute. Not surprising, since most people were going to be heading into the main building and not out doors, and anyone else had probably already gone outside. "We can get to the rec field from here."

Hakkai nodded, and tried to remember the maps someone had tacked up the other week as they hurried down the hall. He'd made a copy, now that he thought of it, but he hadn't remembered to bring it with him. "Through the door at the end of the hall, right?"

Though it was a question, he didn't wait to go forward and push the door open, just enough to see out. It certainly looked like the recreation field - and there were no people or enemies in sight.

"It looks all right - for now, anyway." He pushed the door open all the way and headed outside.
