Day 65: Intercom, Evening

As some of the clouds from earlier began to clear, the intercom jingle sounded over the intercom once again.

"Hello, patients!" came the Head Doctor's cheery voice. "I hope you're all feeling fresh and clean this evening! To top it all off, we've prepared a scrumptious herb chicken dinner for you to eat before bed. Of course, we have vegetarian options available, so please don't hesitate to ask the nurse if you're interested in that.

Also, since we have the pleasure of welcoming a few new patients into our family, some of you will be receiving new roommates. Let's do our best to give them a nice, big Landel's Institute welcome, shall we?"

The Head Doctor gave a friendly chuckle. "Well, anyway, enjoy your dinner!"

With that, the intercom shut off.

By dinnertime, the Doctor had found his thoughts wandering back towards the clue that had been found last night. Other than what he'd heard secondhand (or third-hand, or fourth-hand), there had been a little talk of it on the bulletin board—but all of it made him wish he'd followed the mention of it on the intercom, to have a look for himself. It seemed unlikely that it would still remain tonight—surely Landel and his people had cleaned up any trace—but unless there was some new lead to follow, having a quick look around might not be a bad idea.

And if there was some new lead to follow, well... He'd be sure to chase it tonight.

He was brought from his thoughts by the arrival at his room. Byrne had already arrived, he saw when the nurse let him in, and looked to be in the midst of writing. "Alright?" the Doctor greeted briefly. He paused for a moment at the door, and then headed straight for his closet.

The sound of the door opening wasn't enough to stop Byrne in the middle of his writing, but the sound of his roommate's voice was; at that, he paused almost immediately so he could look back and give the man at least a decent greeting. "Yeah," he replied, a weary smile on his face. "More or less."

To be honest, he could stand to be more alright, but hey, look on the bright side: at least he still had all four limbs. At least he was still alive. And at least he didn't have to deal with losing a third roommate! He could rest a little easier as far as the latter was concerned.

"How about you? You okay?" His roommate was heading for his closet now to do whatever, so Byrne would return to his own personal task of finishing this journal entry. Who says he couldn't talk and write at the same time?

"Not bad," the Doctor answered, opening the closet door and crouching down to have a look in his box of possessions. He pulled out his suit and coat, checking briefly to make sure his sonic screwdriver was in one of the pockets.

He straightened, turning towards his desk now and laying his clothes off to one side of the tray that held dinner. He wanted to get a quick start tonight, but he could still change later, after he'd eaten. And after a bit of conversation.

"Say, you didn't happen to have a look in the x-ray room last night, did you?" he asked as he took a seat at the desk, looking toward Byrne now. Even if his roommate hadn't gone himself, maybe he'd heard something more than the Doctor had learned today.

Good to hear the Doctor was also doing pretty well. Though Byrne was rather unsurprised to hear him ask about the X-Ray room first thing. Seemed like that was conversation topic number one today, for obvious reasons. Did anyone really know what the deal was? Didn't seem like it. Just a bunch of guesses and vague explanations, from what he'd been able to read and hear. Rather frustrating, really.

Ah, well. Frustrating or not, the prosecutor didn't mind talking about it again. He set his pen down so he could make eye contact with his roommate while talking. "No, I didn't," he replied, "but I've been paying attention to what people have been saying about it on the board. How much have you heard?" If anything? Byrne didn't want to go off on a ramble if he'd just be repeating things the Doctor already knew.

... The Doctor... He still wondered...
