Night 70: East Wing, Hall A
[ from here ]
Kyousuke made sure to check the hall over carefully, but... Even though they'd covered almost the entirety of the second floor, and a little of the first, if you included the Sun Room railing, there still wasn't a soul in sight. He was normally cool and collected by nature, and it was probably just a coincidence, but even he was starting to find the quiet a little unnerving.
"It's almost like we're the only ones in the building," he muttered to himself.
Mentally, he tried to make a note of the state of the doors as they passed them. From earlier, it looked like they couldn't open ones still in good shape, which he was still inwardly annoyed about. Locked or not, it shouldn't take so much effort just to get past one door.

The hall they were in extended a good ways down, with doors on either side. The map said it should dead end here. He figured that was as good a place to start as any. Five doors on either side. He stopped when they reached the last. Unfortunately, the knob refused to turn when he grabbed it. "Damn," he muttered. "I hope they're not all locked like this." A glance over his shoulder showed that they were still alone. "Where do you think everyone is?"

He frowned as he saw that the door Lloyd grabbed onto was both locked and devoid of rust. Part of him still wanted to try smashing it, but there wouldn't be much point to it. They'd just have to try something they could open a little more easily. Instead, he moved to the other side of hallway. The first door there wasn't as far down as the locked one, but it was also completely out of shape, so they should at least be able to get in.
"... Who knows," he answered. "But it's a big place. There's still the med wing, the basement, and even the forest outside. We're probably just the only ones who decided to come up here tonight, that's all."
Though that was still pretty strange, honestly. How many patients were here? About a hundred? Not very many, but it seemed like they should still be a bit more spread out than this. ... Or maybe they'd caught onto something they hadn't. It would make sense if nobody was here because they were chasing some clue.
"Let's just worry about ourselves for now. ... This one looks like it'll open pretty easily."
Once again, he slammed down on the rusty door handle until it gave, pulling out the lock and helping himself into the next room.

The hall was still as dark and oppressive as before they'd gone into that room, but it also still seemed empty, too. There was a door just across the hall from where they were, and that was what Lloyd aimed for. Unfortunately, it wasn't quite so easy to leave his feelings and thoughts behind. The memory of that picture still burned in his mind. It wasn't real. It couldn't be real. But the more the thought about it, the more in plagued him that what if it could have been? What if Dirk hadn't found him that day? What if Kratos had found him instead? What would it have been like if he'd never lost his father? To have Kratos be his Dad. If Kratos had raised him, would there have been a picture just like that?
Stop it. He blasted the angry thought at himself, trying to bury the hurt he still felt. Stop thinking about it. There's more important things. Tsurugi's not having any problems ignoring whatever they had in his box. I need to be more like him. Because the other boy was doing a much better job at keeping control of himself.
Tsurugi. Kratos. Genis. Zelos. Colette. Almost everyone Lloyd knew and counted as a friend. How did they all manage to keep a lid on what they were feeling? How did they hold themselves back when Lloyd was all but throwing himself at whatever was going on?
Taking his frustration out on the door, Lloyd did what Tsurugi had done before and smashed his flashlight against the ancient, rusting knob. It took him two tries, but eventually it broke off. The door creaked when he pushed it open, making him grimace and hesitate, shining his flashlight in. If something was in there, it would know they were coming.
"You ready?" he asked, keeping his voice down just in case.

He crossed his arms, waiting impatiently as Lloyd broke the door. Not that he was annoyed with Lloyd in particular, but with nowhere to channel his frustration, all he wanted to was keep moving, and any little pause became significantly more annoying than it should have been.
"Yeah. Let's go," he muttered, helping himself into now unlocked room.

The halls were still empty, although it wasn't as if Kyousuke checked very thoroughly; at this point, he was expecting it. He knew that was a dangerous mentality to fall into but it couldn't be helped. They'd been up here a while now.
Just slightly down the hall, the doors on either side were rusted over, and the boy paused, frowning at them.
"Think we should split up?" he asked. It would be quicker to check both and meet back outside, but it could also be more dangerous.

Even so, the dark was a little too ominous and oppressive to be entirely reckless just yet. Lloyd eyed the two doors for a moment, then glanced down the hall uneasily. Nothing, but that didn't mean they were completely safe, and who knew what was behind those doors?
But it would be faster, and they'd already wasted so much time...
"Let's see what's behind them first. We can split up if it looks like it's safe. You pick a door, I'll take the other."

"Looks like it's for the janitors," he said, noting all of the cleaning supplies. There probably wouldn't be anything useful for them in there. "There's another door at the other side, but it'd be a pretty tight fit for both of us." Not to mention it was so filled with stuff that it almost seemed dangerous.
"How's yours?" he asked, turning back to Lloyd.

As he peered inside the room, not yet stepping foot into it, his flashlight cast long, strange shadows that made it all too easy for his imagination to think might hide more menacing things. He warily scanned the room. It wasn't that large. "More boxes in mine," he finally answered, once he was reasonably sure there was nothing lurking there. "And more cabinets. I think it's safe." He glanced back at the other boy. "But maybe we should keep the doors open, just in case." So that they could hear if the other yelled for help.

"Okay," he agreed. "Yell if you need anything."
With that, he turned to make his way into the closet.

A quick scan of the hall showed that Tsurugi hadn't come back yet. Lloyd opened his mouth to call to him, then closed it, thinking better of the idea. The hall still seemed empty, but he didn't think it would be a good idea to make noise that might attract the attention of anything that might be out there. The question now, though, was should he wait, or follow Tsurugi?
Lloyd stood there for a moment of brief indecision, then started forward. There wasn't any reason not to go.

Kyousuke emerged from the closet very carefully, shooting a wary glance back at it as he stepped into the hall. ... It looked like he managed to avoid stepping into anything, even now that his hands were so occupied. Lloyd seemed to have gotten there before him, so he gave him a nod.
"... Sorry to keep you waiting," he greeted. "The closet isn't very useful, but the room past it has some maintenance tools. I can't carry anything else, but I thought we might be able to try this on one of the doors." He held out the crowbar he'd taken for Lloyd to take a look at.

"Mostly I found clothes and bandages." He held up the nurse's uniform. "I'm thinking if I could change into these when no one's looking tomorrow, I might be able to get away from the nurses. I took some of the bandages, too, and... You don't know what... tee-len-ohl is, do you?" The unfamiliar word tripped clumsily off his tongue. Juggling the clothes, he pulled the bottle out so Tsurugi could see for himself.

He drew his eyebrows together as Lloyd tried to pronounce some word, obviously not understanding. Tee-len... What? ... Maybe he'd better take a look. He awkwardly shifted the crowbar to his elbow, so he could take the bottle into his hand and skim the label. Once he read it, he understood a lot better.
"Tylenol," he corrected. It was a foreign brand, but it did get sold back home, too, so he could still explain it. "It helps with pain, and it can bring fevers down. It's not a bad thing to have on hand." He handed the bottle back Lloyd, and shuffled the crowbar back into his hand. ... He really needed a better way to carry things.

Bottle still in hand, he shifted the clothes to his shoulder to join the shirt he'd taken from his supposed box of things. Then he took the bottle back and examined it with new interest. "These sound pretty useful. I wonder if they're like apple gels, or a panacea bottle." Of course, there wasn't really any way to find out short of taking one of the pills, and he wasn't about to waste any of them when he wasn't even in that much pain. "Did you want a bottle, too? There were more in there."
